Someone please define what exactly a smoking gun is, and what will actually constitute material breach of UN Resolution 1441. I want to discuss this issue in good faith, but it is clear to me that I simply do not understand the terms of the debate.

It’s called Diplo-mumble; that’s why us ordinary folk “just don’t understand the nuances”.
Maybe it’s time for plain old blunt talk and action!

It’s an overused cliche’.
For a gun to be smoking, it must have been fired…..the whole idea of the Iraq venture is to keep their “guns” from being fired (via WMDs).

I think you took me too literally, Ricky.
I meant in regards to IRAQ, what finally qualifies as a violation of the resolution.

There is no smoking gun. The people opposed to this will say and do anything, beyond all reason, in the hopes of preventing military action.

Nah, I was following, John…I was just putting forth the notion that some folks won’t see anything that qualifies until another 9/11 hapens. And in some cases, like the Richard Geres, the Jeaneane Garafolos & the Barbara Lees, that won’t be enough (all were against going after the Taliban/Al Qaeda).
