Balloon Juice

Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

The US Supreme Court is on the ballot in november.

if you can’t see it, then you are useless in the fight to stop it.

Republicans are the party of chaos and catastrophe.

Live so that if you miss a day of work people aren’t hoping you’re dead.

Technically true, but collectively nonsense

An unpunished coup is a training exercise.

“Cheese and Kraken paired together for the appetizer trial.”

These days, even the boring Republicans are nuts.

We are builders in a constant struggle with destroyers. let’s win this.

Prediction: the gop will rethink its strategy of boycotting future committees.

Roe isn’t about choice, it’s about freedom.

Cole is on a roll !

Too often we confuse noise with substance. too often we confuse setbacks with defeat.

Come on, man.

“The difference between stupidity and genius is that genius has its limits.”

Never forget that he train is barreling down on Trump, even as he dances on the tracks.

He imagines himself as The Big Bad, Who Is Universally Feared… instead of The Big Jagoff, Who Is Universally Mocked.

Can we lighten up on the doomsday scenarios?

Their freedom requires your slavery.

No Justins, No Peace

Impressively dumb. Congratulations.

The cruelty is the point; the law be damned.

The worst democrat is better than the best republican.

When the time comes to make an endorsement, the pain of NYT editors will be palpable as they reluctantly whisper “Biden.”

The Impotent ICC

by John Cole|  March 11, 20035:03 pm| 3 Comments

This post is in: Foreign Affairs

The world’s first permanent war crimes court swore in its first 18 judges Tuesday to try the 21st century’s worst crimes in a move hailed as the biggest legal milestone since Hitler’s henchmen were tried at Nuremberg.

Amid pomp and ceremony, the judges at the International Criminal Court, or ICC, 11 men and seven women, were sworn in to try people accused of genocide, crimes against humanity and war crimes.

Insert your own snarky joke. Who are they going to try? Mugabe? Doubt it, too cozy with the French. What about Hussein? Woops- too cozy with the French.

I know- Sharon, Netanyahu, and Bush.

More Evidence

No, Saddam Hussein was not directly responsible for the events of 9/11. But would you fools please quit pretending that SaddamHussein and terrorism have no connextion. Hussein, by definition and practice, is a terrorist. Here is simply some more evidence, not that any is needed:

Saddam Hussein has opened a training camp for Arab volunteers willing to carry out suicide bombings against U.S. forces in case they invade Iraq, Arab media and Iraqi dissidents said Tuesday.

The dissidents, speaking by telephone from Jordan, said scores of Arab volunteers have gone to a special camp run by the Iraqi intelligence service near the town of al-Khalis, 40 miles northeast of Baghdad.

Most of the volunteers are Islamic activists who belong to pan-Arab groups that maintain close ties with Saddam’s regime, the dissidents said on condition of anonymity.

No Kidding!

This just in from the economists at the Washington Post:
With gasoline prices climbing to near-record levels, some Americans are cutting back sharply back on nonessential driving or trading in their gas guzzlers.

Shocking, I say.

Welch’s World

In case you missed it, Matt Welch had some interesting points to make about the press corp in general and Helen Thomas in particular in the comments section of this post. Here is a bit of what Matt had to say:

I like Helen Thomas. She about near drank me under the table nine years ago, when we met during Clinton’s visit to Prague (I was working for UPI then). She was totally contemptuous of Bubba, and clearly had been speaking her mind freely for several decades now, for mostly good and the occasional ill.

So she’s old and sometimes shrill. Great! I’ll take her over Sam Donaldson any day of the week. I think it’s just fine that the White House press corps asks rude & occasionally bizarre questions — they’re there to provoke answers, after all. Ever see that weird old dude, I presume a Washington Times type, who always tortures Ari Fleischer near the end of his press conference? Guy’s a near-loon … and I love him. Presidents and their spokes-dwarves should be made to respond to such people, who at the very least inject a small jolt of color into an increasginly gray little room.

and

BUT. I like the concept of cranks asking questions. And I don’t think Helen has descended into full crank-hood yet, though it’s certainly possible (I’ve haven’t read or seen enough of her to tell, though the last things I’ve seen have been shrill). Enough *Americans* are cranks — I’m a crank, you’re a crank. I’d love to see Richard Bennett asking the first question at a presidential press conference. Or Atrios.

On his website, he now presents this scenario:

Smoking Gun?

Someone please define what exactly a smoking gun is, and what will actually constitute material breach of UN Resolution 1441. I want to discuss this issue in good faith, but it is clear to me that I simply do not understand the terms of the debate.
