I think the thing that is being missed the most in the coverage about Jayson Blair is the personal aspect of it. I am not apologizing for his behavior- he will and should have to pay the price for his misdeeds- but am I the only person who looks at this young guy and thinks “What is he going to do with the rest of his life?”
The NY Times will recover- in fact it already has. I expect there will be four op-eds penned tomorrow bashing something or another about the current administration. What will happen to Jayson Blair – he is simply ruined, done, finished. Even if he brought in on himself, it is nothing to be gleeful about. It really is kind of sad.
*** Update ***
Apparently Blair did this at the Boston Globe, as well.

You pays your money, you takes your chances. I really don’t feel sorry for the guy — he got away with it for years.

Book deal. Look at Stephen Glass.

Don’t cry for Jayson…
You forget we live in the U.S.A., where lying often pays off.

Really, who can get mad at Jayson Blair. Everyone is mad because this is an exclusive newspaper that basically **** up. Regardless, if he was promoted because of race, The point is The NY Times executives are just as responsible for allowing his material to be printed without proper proofing of his work. You can’t take anything for granted or can you micromanage a responsible individual. They all knew he was young and inexperience. He had issues that were right in front of them and they chose to ignore. Who can blame Jayson for getting away with it for so long. Sure he was wrong. Now because he is a minority, the so called “freedom to be world” will look at all minorities the same.Any position of status for a minority will be judged and not because of their background but the content of their skin. Have we not risen above the color of skin and honor because of our ablilities. I am a bit confused in what the expectations are of an individualin the workplace. Most people who have made it to the top did not do anything different then Jayson Blair. They just did not get caught! Support Jayson. The strange thing to all of this, Jayson will come out ahead. Movie and book deals are in order. Talk shows etc. He will definitely be remembered in history as the journalist who got away with it under the nose of so-called smart executives.

I am very angry at Jayson Blair. As an African American English profesor who has begun to think seriously about moving toward a career in journalism, I am almost unspeakably angry at Mr. Blair for how he has damaged the credibility of all black people in the newsmedia. While most media watchers realize that Jayson Blair’s actions are his and his alone, there is a critical mass of people out there who are using the Blair debacle to call into question the qualifications of all African American reporters. I’ve browsed the websites of several of the major news outlets, as well as some of the small independents; and I have been disappointed to see that most of the commentaries I have encounter are looking at this not only as a referendum on Jayson Blair, but on a referendum on the broader question of diversity in the newsroom, even above and beyond the question of affirmative action.
