This may be the most horrible thing I have ever heard of in my adult life. Dr. Catherine Hamlin is most assuredly reserved a spot in heaven.

And it’s proof of the evil stupidity of the rabid-right’s witch hunt against family planning services and women’s health care because someone might mention the A-word. (That would be abortion)
I should think that if one was pro-life he would not want to give credence to the liberal argument that conservatives are a lot more concerned about fetuses than they are about children.
But cheers to Dr Hamlin- she is a saint in the truest sense of the word.

IS there anything you won’t use as a bludgeon against Republicans?
What this is proof of is the moral superiority of the United States over other cultures- cultures who do not value women, who treat them as disposable commodities. It is proof of the vast superiority of the medical expertise and care of the United States.
Pro-life individuals have their position due to their sense of morality and religious convictions. I don’t know one pro-lifer who would be in favor of cutting funding or keeping funding from the sort of operation Dr. Hamlin is running. The problem is the abortion at all costs crowd is unwilling to separate their agenda from causes such as this.
If the UNited States is not funding this sort of ooperation to the degree I believe we should (I think we have a moral oligation to address this sort of issue, politically and financially), it is the consequence of the obstinance of both parties, not merely pro-lifers. BTW- I am pro-choice.

John-
I didn’t mean that to bludgeon Republicans in general- if my post came off that way, I apologise. I have a big problem with the policy-makers (on any side of an issue) who let ideological blinders keep them ignorant of the side-effects of any given stand.
As a clinician,I’m pro-choice, too, but every time I see a pregnancy terminated because it’s unwanted, I feel a deep sense of sadness and shame. (Comes from having kids, I guess.) People need to have access to (and education about) contraception if we want to put an end to unwanted pregnancies. You and I are both smart enough to know that Santorum-type solutions will never work in the real world.
I agree with you that America is a great society. Maybe that’s why (like, I suspect, a lot of liberals) I want to hold us up to such high ideals.
Respectfully,
Jeff
PS: Let’s not forget that Dr Hamlin’s Australian. We Americans don’t have a monopoly on decency. : )

I understand- it just seemed to come off that way. I am pro-choice, but I get really heated when I hear some on the left bashing the christian right and others over abortion- they believe that abortion is against God’s will, not that they are evil people. Most of them are the most genuinely decent people I have ever met- they just view things differently. Coincidentally- they are also the people most likely to donate their time and money in the community.

I don’t have any issues with Bush cutting off funding for U.N. activities that he can’t control. He should be aware, though, when cutting such funding adversely affects activities he ought to support, and take some kind of remedial action when that happens.
I’m not sure what fistulas and Chinese abortions have in common; in that respect the article is poorly written. I do have problems with funding Chinese abortions. Selective abortion in China is currently a popular way of ensuring a male child. It’s not clear to me why we should encourage such a thing with our money.
