The Spanish Prisoner (David Mamet movie) is also very good.

Does the ending of Kelly’s Heroes make it a con movie?

Dirty Rotten Scoundrels. Terrific comedy about con artists and confidence games.

Well, “The Sting II”, obviously. Mac Davis and Jackie Gleason at the height of their craft.

Ocean’s 11 and the Thomas Crown Affair both have a certain amount of neato skullduggery to them (note that, in an attempt to forestall a movie feud, I am not saying which versions).

I give a resounding vote of agreement to “House of Games”. Lindsay Crouse and Joe Mantegna are both superb in it.

I think it’s a far better movie than “The Sting”.

Can’t pass up “Widow’s Peak”. Good honest skulduggery in an Irish village.

Can’t go wrong with House of Games.

“Hard 8” has some stuff on conning casino’s. If you like Paul Thomas Anderson movies, you’ll like Hard 8.

I never saw it, but isn’t Tin Men a con movie?

George C. Scott in _The Flim-Flam Man_; _Paper Moon_. _The Con Men_. _Catch Me If You Can_. _Nine Queens_. _The Spanish Printer_. _Pulp Fiction_. _The Hot Rock_. _The Color of Money_. _Bound_. _Chinatown_. _Masquerade_. _Elmer Gantry_. _Jackie Brown_. _Midnight Cowboy_. _The Great Imposter_. _Meet John Doe_. _The Grifters_. _Two Days In The Valley_. _The Hustler_. _Confidence_. _Palm Springs Story_. _Nothing Sacred_.

Just off the top of my head: there are plenty more. How is it that people can think of only one or two? :-)

    comedy-heartbreakers

great ones — usual suspects, tin men, & the grifters

good ones — dirty rotten scoundrels, the score,& thomas crown

and most of the others already mentioned are still better than watching anything described as ‘reality tv.’

    except “sting II”

One of my all time favorite con-man movies is “Diggstown”. A good boxing movie and a great con-man movie.

If you’re going to list Dirty Rotten Scoundrels, you should also mention the original movie, Bedtime Story, starring Marlon Brando and David Niven.
Kudos to mentioning House of Games. Outstanding flick.

Others have mentioned them, but I’m partial to both “The Grifters” and “Ocean’s 11”.

“Cuz I said to name the ‘best,’ not all of them.”

But I think every movie I named is among the best. Every single one of them is, in my opinion, great in one fashion or another. (Admitedly I may be biased regarding _The Hot Rock_ by sentiment given the amount of filming done in places I hung out in all the time, such as the Brooklyn Museum.)

I’m one of the few people who, however, thinks _The Usual Suspects_ is over-rated. (Not “bad”; just over-rated.)

“_The Spanish Printer_” Oops. Sounds like an interesting movie, though. I meant _The Spanish Prisoner_, of course. Another: _Miami Blues_.

Oh, and modify what I said: I will not defend _Two Days In The Valley_ as “great,” or even “good.” I got carried away there. :-)

Although they lean al little more on the slimey salesman selling anything to anyone side of a con, someone ought to mention: Glen Gary Glen Ross, Boiler Room, The Prime Gig, and Cadilac Man. (Tin Men was mentioned and also falls into this catagory).

In addition the new movie Confidence was pretty good, and should be added to the list.

I shoudl mention the reason I found this thread was that I enjoy these types of movies, and wanted to wacth a few more, so “thanks” to all that have added their suggestions. “Best” or not, I’ve got some new ideas when I next hit the video store. Personally, I strongly recomend, Grifters, House of Cars and the Sting.

    Take care,

    Mark

I think double jeopardy is something like the above mentioned films. Also I liked entrapment, and heist.

All time best….probably Confidence its a great one cliche but very good i recomend it.

I also agree the usual suspect was over rated.

Ocean’s Eleven was mentioned and is excellent. Clooney and Pitt were both excellent and the plot was very well thought out.

One movie no one mentioned: MATCHSTICK MEN! I love movies about cons! Also loved THE STING! And HOUSE OF CARDS, and SPANISH PRISONER! I love any con film that “cons” the audience at the end and throughout, with twists and turns in the plot!
