Dumbest Sports Moment Ever

Unfortunately I am a die-hard Pirates fan. I don’t know what to say about this:

During the famed “Sausage Race” after the sixth inning, Simon swung a bat at one of the costumed participants, hitting a 19-year-old girl. She fell near the Pirates’ dugout and another participant, a 21-year-old girl, tripped over her. Both girls were sent to the stadium First Aid station and treated for scrapped knees.

Milwaukee County sheriff’s deputies reviewed tape of the incident and interrogated Simon at the stadium before transporting him in handcuffs to the Milwaukee County Jail, where he was expected to be booked and released early this morning. Simon is to appear before a district attorney this morning.

I guess having a losing record for ten years is not enough to humiliate my Buccos. Streaming Video can be found here. I really don’t know what to say, except that with the Pirates team batting average, I am surprised he hit them.

I just took a trip down memory lane and looked up a bunch of quotes from probably my favorite Pirates player ever, Andy Van Slyke. He was an unbelievable defensive outfielder, funny as hell, and an all around great guy. Here are some of his best quotes:

Goodness, I miss him.

“It is true Bush is going to spend a sum of money . . . surpassing any his predecessors committed to Africa, and yet he will never be liked on this continent,” read an editorial in The Nation, Kenya’s influential daily. “In Kenya especially, America has become a dirty word. . . . Africans respect power, of course. But there is something they respect more. Wisdom. They are not sure what they are seeing in the White House represents anything close to that.”

Quick- name some wise African leaders. Quick, name the wise policies that have made Africa the paradise it currently is. It is amazing to me that a continent whose key leisure activites are machete massacres and burning people alive while they are held in place with a used tire, where some states have a population in which 40% are afflicted with AIDS, and where you are hard pressed to find a self-sustaining stable democracy that people are this mad about the War in Iraq. This has been fomented by the elites- the same professional protestors that are everywhere. The article even makes that clear:

In Uganda, which Bush will visit briefly on Friday, ordinary people are proud and happy to have an American president visit. But they see Bush’s interest in Africa as simply part of his war against terrorism. Already, intellectuals in newspapers and on the radio in Uganda have characterized him as a “cold fish,” who does not really care about Africans.

We really are living in a post-modern world- perception is more important than reality. Go read the whole article- the deck has been stacked against this administration, and nothing he does will be good enough for many of the African elites. In that regard, I guess they are more sophisticated that many people would guess- they sound just like Gore voters.

With American costs and casualties mounting in Iraq, the Bush administration is showing new interest in putting NATO in charge of the military occupation as a way of scaling back the U.S. troop commitment, U.S. and NATO officials say.

Such a change would discomfit some administration hard-liners, as it would force the United States to share decision-making on Iraq with European leaders who opposed the U.S.-led invasion, analysts said. It might also require seeking a mandate from the United Nations Security Council, which the United States failed to get before launching the war to topple Saddam Hussein.

But as the single most powerful nation in NATO, the United States would retain military command while spreading the burden and costs among a number of nations, thereby easing demands on overstretched American forces, diplomats said.

“There is interest” in turning the mission over to NATO, although not right away, a senior Bush administration official said yesterday. “I think the American public would be pleased to see NATO helping us in Iraq. … Americans believe in NATO and would consider it a plus to have NATO secure Iraq.”

We will see where this goes…

Socialists Protest Bush- This is News?

The Atriettes are using this story as proof that everyone in Africa hates Bush:

In South Africa’s capital of Pretoria, about 1,000 demonstrators marched peacefully to the U.S. Embassy, protesting Bush’s war in Iraq and trip to Africa. About two dozen police officers and a handful of embassy employees looked on as demonstrators burned several small American flags emblazoned with slogans against Bush.

“We stand together with millions of people throughout the world and say that the biggest weapon of mass destruction is George W. Bush,” Salim Vally of the Anti-War Coalition said in a speech.

Do a little googling. Look up the Anti-War coalition. Look up the Palestinian Solidarity Committee. Look up Salim Vally. Find out what large groups they are all associated with. And would you please quit telling me that I can’t use the ANSWER crowd and the anti-war protestors against Democrats who use their underlings to bash Bush.

Some interesting developments. First this:

suburban Chicago man was arrested Wednesday on charges of secretly gathering information on Iraqi opposition figures as an unregistered agent of Saddam Hussein’s intelligence service.
Khaled Abdel-Latif Dumeisi, 60, was charged based on a dossier seized in a Baghdad safehouse allegedly run by Iraqi intelligence in April as U.S. troops moved in.

Federal officials also said unnamed informants identified Dumeisi as having contact with Iraqi intelligence agents attached to Saddam’s mission to the United Nations
