The other day Yglesias linked to a NY Times survey regarding Hispanics, Bush, and the GOP. Today, Drudge links to this survey of Hispanic attitudes about the United States in general, and damn, the results are nice to read:
Hispanics in the U.S. hold both a strong desire to preserve their traditional culture and values, and optimism about their children

Unfortunately, simply saying that the U.S. was founded and built by immigrants is an extremely naive platitude unless one takes into consideration historical differences and the like.
For instance, do you consider it OK for Koreans to come to the U.S. and want to be citizens? Then, you’re an “immigration supporter.”
However, do you also support pregnant Koreans flying to the U.S., having a baby, and then flying back to Korea, safe in the knowledge that they’ve just made a U.S. citizen who will serve as an anchor baby to allow the rest of the family to immigrate at a later date? (L.A. Times report described here.)
You better support the latter if you support the former, since all we know so far is that you’ve presented a misty-eyed invoking of Ellis Island, and you haven’t qualified your “support for immigration” in any way.
When you’re ready to start qualifying your support for immigration, I’d suggest googling, say, “reconquista” and seeing where that takes you.

Lonewacko- What part of a post on Americans of Hispanic ancestry reporting that they have a positive outlook for the future would give you any idea that I am in favor of illegal immigration?

Screw it, -I’m- all for illegal immigration. My operating opinion is, keep the borders tight, but if you can manage to get in – and you’re not some sort of revolutionary/terrorist – more power to you. Learn English, get a job – yes, we should jump hard on people hiring illegals for illegally-low pay; a free green card for whistleblowers might prove a useful incentive – and keep your nose clean, and you can stay until Doomsday for all I care. Shoot, that’s what my great-grandparents did, and most of them deserved hanging, flogging or a free trip to Australia.
Yes, there’s holes in the above. No coffee yet this morning. :)

PS: And those guys who almost managed to drive to Florida should NEVER have been sent back, either.

John, my heart swells: at least Hispanics ARE being recognized not as a ball-and-chain to progress nor as a group of hapless parasites.

With Hispanics having passed blacks as the largest minority group in the US, that study should strike fear into the hearts of Democrats everywhere. There’s very little about those attitudes that suggests that, as a group, they’ll continue to give the bulk of their votes to the Democrats.

My response above was to this part: “It is not just another dull platitude to state that this country was founded and built by immigrants…”
Unfortunately, that’s the same language that anti-Americans use to justify things like driver’s licenses for illegal aliens, as well as chain migration (legal and intended) and anchor babies (also legal). The usual spiel goes something like this: “What? You’re opposed to driver’s licenses for immigrants? Don’t you realize this country was built on immigration? You should feel guilty about trying to haul up the ladder? etc. etc. etc.”

In my oppinion, immigration is a great thing, its immigrants that started this country, and its immigrants that keep it going, they take all the jobs that us citizens wont take, plus wether they’re illegal or not they still help the economy, they buy our products, and pay taxes, and they give our country some flavor! My two best friends are from Mexico and Argentina, and I love learning about their culture and teaching them about ours. There is no doubt that immigration is good.

Immigration is cool man. It brings culture to this place. A lot of people get bored with the regular stuff and want somthin different. I fully support immigration!!
