*could* be he went from a high-carb diet to a low-carb diet.
I’ve had similar changes happen, with only a few lbs difference on the scale but a big differenc in how clothes fit.

That knee injury might have screwed with his workout routine. Steroids or not, you need some serious workout time to get and keep the “before” look.
There were some wild reports that Bonds was reporting at something like 165-185 lbs, but they were apparently unfounded (duh–he’d be ready for a coffin if he lost that much weight)–he’s reported at somewhere around 225.

Guys, take it from a former small-time athlete: you don’t change that much that fast.
I love Giambi…..but he was probably juicin’.

Explanation (theory) number 3: his transormation to a metrosexual has been completed.

He doesn’t look like he took steroids in the “before” picture. His skin looks fine and his facial bone structure is the same in both shots. He’s also not big enough in the “before” picture. His shoulders don’t look good nor do his upper arms. His gut is bigger than his chest.
What does look like possible steroid use is his big neck and traps. But so does Don Mattingly and he’s not a steroid user. However, he does have the “genetics” of a world-class athelete – he also has the talent. Contrast him with Mark McGuire – who might have taken steroids but says it was all due to creatine monohydrate and the fact that he’s a big dude, always has been.

No steroid – or anything else other than surgery – changes the structure of the human skeleton (bone). Steroids cause water retention which often takes place in the face (read: Barry Bonds to the Nth degree), but nothing changes within the bones.
Acne and/or hair loss isn’t a 100% side-effect.
In a nutshell, Giambi gained weight “all over”, including a good amount of water-retention, and then lost it “all over”, including the water retention. What causes the red flags is that it happened so quickly.
Even more interesting is that I noted Chipper Jones’ obvous 15 lb weight loss last year, which was also reflected in his large loss of power at the plate.
There’s going to be a lot more who “changed their diets”.

Human growth hormore changes bone structure. Look at Lee Haney. Look at Chris Dickerson. But… HGH isn’t a steroid, though. Did Tom Platz take HGH or was he simply a deca guy? What I was getting at was giambi has a wide, big head with rock solid cheekbones in both photos – that you correctly point out as a possible indicator of water retention due to steroid use.
His skin doesn’t look rubbery in the “before” photo, either. He simply does not look like he juiced. I don’t juice, but I’ve seen a lot of ’em over the years at the gyms to which I’ve belonged. Someone with pale skin like Giambi should have his back and shoulders covered in zits. He’d also look better. Where are Giambi’s lats? If he was doing pull-ups (good baseball exercise) and juicing, his back and bi’s should be HUGE – they aren’t. He looks pumped, but that could be from push ups, dips, etc.
Giambi simply doesn’t have the look.

“Guys, take it from a former small-time athlete: you don’t change that much that fast.”
Say what? I lost about 20 pounds in the space of maybe three months just by cutting sugar out of my diet.
Not to mention that there’d be no reason for anyone juicing in baseball to stop; the testing regime isn’t rigorous enough to catch anyone serious about not getting caught.

I’ve lost 15-20 pounds in a month before. Came with a massive change in eating habits and a sudden increase in the amount of time available to exercise.
