Balloon Juice

Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

Peak wingnut was a lie.

If you’re pissed about Biden’s speech, he was talking about you.

Too often we hand the biggest microphones to the cynics and the critics who delight in declaring failure.

They love authoritarianism, but only when they get to be the authoritarians.

Yeah, with this crowd one never knows.

Meanwhile over at truth Social, the former president is busy confessing to crimes.

A thin legal pretext to veneer over their personal religious and political desires

Accountability, motherfuckers.

You can’t love your country only when you win.

“Jesus paying for the sins of everyone is an insult to those who paid for their own sins.”

Seems like a complicated subject, have you tried yelling at it?

Make the republican party small enough to drown in a bathtub.

I really should read my own blog.

Red lights blinking on democracy’s dashboard

You cannot shame the shameless.

When I decide to be condescending, you won’t have to dream up a fantasy about it.

Whoever he was, that guy was nuts.

I see no possible difficulties whatsoever with this fool-proof plan.

Let me eat cake. The rest of you could stand to lose some weight, frankly.

Wow, you are pre-disappointed. How surprising.

Impressively dumb. Congratulations.

Reality always lies in wait for … Democrats.

We are aware of all internet traditions.

Incompetence, fear, or corruption? why not all three?

I would like to take this post to remember all those who have lost their lives in the defense of freedom, and in particular, the numerous men and women, heroes one and all, who have died in Afghanistan and Iraq.

God bless you and your families.

Excellent! I saw that last night “60 Minutes” ran the pictures of those who. It was powerful.

Didn’t Ted Koppel do the same thing? Only he was accused of undermining the war and giving aid an comfort to the enemy.

To me, acknowledgement of our soldiers sacrifice supercedes all.

Koppel did the same thing, timed to have not a single thing to do with Decoration Day. It was a sweeps thing, if memory serves, so it was self-centered as opposed to selfless.

    Patrick,
A soldier’s death in the service of our country shouldn’t be acknowledged just 1 day each year and ignored for the other 364. Are you saying that anyone that talks about military deaths on any other day than Memorial day is self serving? I think that’s garbage.

The difference between when this blog does it and when Koppell or Doonesbury does it- this blog actually does mean to thank and acknowledge the soldiers. The other 2 only care about them for a political football.

God bless all US military members- past and present- and their families.

Someone you like and someone you dislike say the same thing (honoring the military dead). The one you like is honorable and above reproach, the other is just playing political football. Is the new century conservative movement so devoid of substance and reason that this is your arguement: we mean it and you don’t? Loser.

    Far North,
When Koppel read the names he only did those that died in Iraq. Where was his tribute to those that lost their lives in Afganistan? I have friends serving in both areas. Afganistan is not enough of a hot spot to keep the peace doves riles up.

John, thank you for the tribute. Well done.

    StuckInOregon,
I don’t discount anything anyone did for our country in Afganistan. But I’m sick of people who claim to be Americans that say that they, and only they, have a monopoly on patriotism. These dimwits seem to believe that they can see into someone’s mind and determine motivation. That Capt Joe character is one as he demonstrates anti-American values. From his posts, it looks like Capt Joe would have made a good Nazi. Or maybe Soviet style goon. I’ve seen him post before.

Crawl back into your hole, Crapton Joe. You are an embarrasement to your country.

    Northie,
Let’s get back to the point. There is zero comparison between John posting this on Decoration day and Koppel (who publicly slants war news to an anti-war perspective) doing a sweeps piece on a network that does all it can to marginialize the freeing of a dark-skinned Muslim nation.

You’re missing it, Patrick. Honoring the soldiers in Iraq (and Afganistan) is the point. I and anyone in America can be against Bush’s folly in Iraq and still be in support of those that were sent to promote Bush’s folly. Give any job to military on behalf of the United States and they will do it. Without question or disention. One can honor the soldier and despise the mission.

It’s troublesome that Bush’s phony WMD claims, unproven al Qaeda connenctions between Saddam and bin Laden and dispicable war planning still result in blind loyalty from the faithful. Just WTF will it take for you to loose faith in the man. How much more can he do to prove that he is not up to the job?

It’s truly sad. There really isn’t anything Bush can do to loose your support, is there? Look at history. The worst leaders were those whose supporters failed to hold them to any honorable standard of conduct, truth and accountability. If any group of leaders in America’s history felt no sense of accoutability, it’s this bunch in power right now.

    Far North:

So, lemme get this straight: If Ted Rall (to pick the most loathsome example) were to provide a long list of all those who died, that’s JUST THE SAME as the VFW providing same said list?

You remember that web-site a few months ago, “America’s Dumbest Soldiers”? It was a list of those killed in Iraq (and possibly Afghanistan). Would you believe them if they said, “Hey, we’re actually honoring the dead, just deriding the cause”?

Sometimes, the messenger IS the message

    Dean,
What’s the litmus test? If I want to acknowledge Americans killed in battle, do I have to pledge loyalty to the Republican party and the Bush administration? Am I un-American if I don’t agree with the new century conservative?

    Just asking.

    Respectfully……

    Patrick,
Even if Koppel was anti-war in his broadcasts (which I don’t know because I don’t usually see his show) would that be somewhat of a balance between the unapologetically extreme-rightwing Bush supporting FOX News?

    North,
So many DU talking points, so little time.

Last post first – Virtually anyone with a TV in the country can see Koppel (or his brothers Dan and Tom). Only cable and satellite owners can see Fox. Check the numbers and you’ll see a significant imbalance. Also, if you’re carping about Fox, find me the Alan Colmes equivalent on NBC or CBS (I’ll concede that John Stossel on ABC has a sense of balance.)

Now the previous one. You’re the one missing it, friend. If Koppel’s intent was to truly honor the war dead, he’d have included the Afghanistan conflict. They clearly did it as a hit-piece on the WOT in Iraq, timed for sweeps.

Let’s take the talking points apart now. WMD claims = Sarin, plus the intel reports of stuff being moved to Syria when it became apparent that we were serious about going into Iraq. Unproven aQ connections – you don’t read the media much, do you. http://www.weeklystandard.com/Content/Public/Articles/000/000/003/033jgqyi.asp . Despicable war planning – Hmmm, not sure what you mean. Do you mean the leftmedia’s reports that we were going to lose the war any moment now, with hundreds of thousands of casualties? Or the one that it would take months to fight our way into Baghdad? It seems like we did what we intended. There are pockets of resistance, and some difficulty with the chameleonic nature of the terrorist fighters, fighting in civilian clothes and hiding behind women and children. But, localized difficulties do not equate losing the war or even a single battle.

As for Bush losing my faith, he’s lost me several times:
    – dumping school vouchers
    – compromising with the drunkard Kennedy on school funding
    – abandoning several brilliant judicial nominations
    – not spending enough time doing slideshows on our successes in Iraq, which outweigh the setbacks thousands to one
    – allowing Norman Meneta to keep his job
    – allowing the TSA to exist a single day more

Your last point was something about accountability. I assume you mean, because we wouldn’t let the French and Germans decide whether we should free the aforementioned dark-skinned folks, or kowtowing to the UN, I say GOOD ON ‘EM. I think the UN has outlived it’s usefulness by a decade or more, and grown beyond any reasonable size and scope. A bunch of unelected unaccountable ninnies from all over the globe want to command US troops. Right after porcine aviation becomes popular.

Oh, and one more thing on a link between al Qaeda and Saddam. I’m not sure what your litmus test is for this. If you’re looking for something like the link between the Army and Marines in the US, traceable to a flowchart of command and meetings photographed and documented, I think you’ll be sorely disappointed by the nature of the terrorist. He doesn’t keep real good records or tend to publicize his movements. Not a lot of cable coverage in his itinerary, unless it’s something like smashing jetliners into big buildings. So I’m afraid, if the intel community uncovering some clandestine meetings between #2’s isn’t good enough for you, you’ll find this all very unsatisfying. But for most leftists, the 21 year old photo of Rummy and Saddam is the defining lens through which this whole picture is seen. It’s all about OILLLLLL!
