Balloon Juice

Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

They love authoritarianism, but only when they get to be the authoritarians.

American History and Black History Cannot Be Separated

Hot air and ill-informed banter

Seems like a complicated subject, have you tried yelling at it?

The truth is, these are not very bright guys, and things got out of hand.

Bad news for Ron DeSantis is great news for America.

Republicans can’t even be trusted with their own money.

Prediction: the GOP will rethink its strategy of boycotting future committees.

Thanks to your bullshit, we are now under siege.

Incompetence, fear, or corruption? why not all three?

This blog will pay for itself.

Fuck these fucking interesting times.

Republicans: slavery is when you own me. freedom is when I own you.

And we’re all out of bubblegum.

Let’s not be the monsters we hate.

Today’s GOP: why go just far enough when too far is right there?

I’m sure you banged some questionable people yourself.

The GOP couldn’t organize an orgy in a whorehouse with a fist full of 50s.

I wonder if trump will be tried as an adult.

The revolution will be supervised.

Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

T R E 4 5 O N

Anyone who bans teaching American history has no right to shape America’s future.

I’d like to think you all would remain faithful to me if i ever tried to have some of you killed.

Jack Ryan

This post is in: Republican Stupidity

FacebookTweetEmail

If the reports are true, this guy is a little off base:

Jeri Ryan said her then-husband took her on three “surprise trips” in the spring of 1998 to New Orleans, New York and Paris, during which he took her to sex clubs. She said she refused to go in the first and went into the second at his insistence.

“It was a bizarre club with cages, whips and other apparatus hanging from the ceiling,” she said in the court document, adding that her husband “wanted me to have sex with him there, with another couple watching. I refused.”

Of course, it is mildly amusing to see certain people commenting about this. Apparently it is not Senatorial to have sex with your wife in public, but it is Presidential to stick cigars in interns, and the only time you shold be on your hands and knees in Paris is when you are getting it politically from Chirac and the Eurotrash.

There are some who believe in turning the other cheek, not going down to your opponent’s level.

Then there are those (like me) who want to win. I’ve made that pretty clear. After impeachment, after Florida, after Iraq? No sir, if you guys screw up I’m going to give as good as we got.

Ah yes, the ever popular “They started it!” argument…

Republicans for the most part want this man out of the race, and you won’t find a single one who has ever held him up as the great hope of the party. This week Democrats are celebrating Bill Clinton as their #1 hero (and have for a while).

A few years ago, I would have said this was off limits (and I thought the “charges” against Ahnuld were bogus) but after impeachment – it’s all fair game. No, its not the way it should be – but that’s how it is. You guys made the game, we’re just playing it now.

The issue is hipocracy. Clinton never ran on a “family values” platform. Ryan, on the other hand, used “values based” arguments to win the GOP primary. This is the same story with William Bennetts gambling problem. Bennett made a huge stink about values, but was, at the same time, gambling away thousands of dollars.

    June 22, 2004 at 8:59 pm

    Yes, ha is correct.
Clinton only mentioned “values” 8 times during his ’96 convention speech, so he wasn’t running a “values based” campaign. Although, I remember when “American values” wasn’t jingoistic.

However I wonder how shortsighted it is to point out that one’s preferred candidate cannot represent “family values”. If one isn’t careful, said party could have some trouble electing candidates in the bible belt if they embrace such an explosive position.

Is it value based to “minister” to a troubled 21 year old (remember that one?)?

Oliver is simply reacting in the way that Kevin Drum has recently–when your comments section is mostly populated by barking moonbats, reasonable discourse puts you at risk of being shredded by the mob. When Oliver criticized the effort to slime Ah-nuld before the recall election last year, his comments section crucified him. He won’t make *that* mistake again any time soon.

  36. 36.

Scott I think you’re right. When a person has no real personal grounding, they tend to be swayed by the strong voices around them. When I was a leftist I saw that happening continuously. It was my utterly stubborn strength of will and sense of honesty that forced me to stray.

I certainly won’t try to get into someone’s head & profess why they act a certain eay (I have it done to me enough to realize how disparaging it can be), but the barking moonbats is an apt analysis.

A shame, but it’s pretty much been eschatized.

It’s kind of the other way around; the libs without the moral flexibility have been chased from politics in defeat. Sort of a natural selection process. It’s weird that you complain about it, though; we live in a country where we impeached a President over marital infidelity. At that point, I kind of figured everyone agreed that the concepts of decency, privacy, and proportionality are completely dead.

Kimmitt, Clinton presided over a large expansion of the civil rights acts regarding “sexual harrassment”, ironically while (heh) allegedly committing the same acts he was signing laws to outlaw. Clinton intenionally lied and obstructed legal proceedings, and suborned others to lie on his behalf. The impeachment proceedings were legally necessary, he skated, but his disbarrments after were never challenged.

That he blames Ken Starr, post hoc, for his Lewianskys just shows how pathetic the man, Clinton, is.

Um….no. Marital infidelity and perjury are 2 different things. One does not get “elevated” into the other. And when you are asked under oath and you lie, that is not “skating around the truth”

It’s his own fault. He was being deposed in an unrelated harassment suit and then he lied under oath.

“Of course, it is mildly amusing to see certain people commenting about this.”

Well, okay, fine. That should be easy to support. Why, exactly, is it “mildly amusing” to see Nick Confessore comment on this? Kevin Drum? Jesse Taylor?

Have they chatted up their opinions about sex clubs? Have they publicaly stated an opinion?

Is everything related to sex related to sex? I’d assume not, given, say, Lynne Cheney’s novel, and, well, the world. No one has accused Jack Ryan of anything beyond, specifically, an interest in public sex clubs, and an interest in having sex in public.
What’s your position on sex clubs,

It’s a fairly limited topic, but, my goodness, John, Republicans in general aren’t going to look great if you expand it. So I’ll limit this comment to there.

No big conclusion. No big partisanship, which is, I know, against the rules. I’m just not clear why it’s “amusing” to see these folks comment about sex clubs. Do you have some cites for their past posts on sex clubs, then?

If not, why? If not, what relevance are you, specifically, citing? URLs?

I’m sure you wouldn’t want to agree with wacky statements along the lines of “Republicans are anti-sex,” because they’d be wrong, and unsupportable. So I’d expect you’d be able to support whatever — and frankly, I can’t tell what the heck it is, other than, apparently, Democrats are pro-sex-clubs — you’re saying.

It’s cute the way your commenters endorse exhibitionism, though. Is that a Republican platform, then
by the way, since you brought it up?
