Atrios is horrified that the White House has not done enough to shut down the Swift Boat Vets commercial, and notes:
The Bush reelection campaign today filed a complaint with the Federal Election Commission against Floyd Brown, a conservative activist who produced the infamous Willie Horton ad in 1988 and recently has been digging for dirt about Bill Clinton.
…Speaking in San Diego after a meeting with Mexican President Carlos Salinas de Gortari, Bush said, “We will do whatever we can to stop any filthy campaign tactics,” and “we will do whatever we can … to see that [Brown] does not use my name for these nefarious purposes.”
The 364 contributors listed on Brown’s FEC reports have received letters from the Bush campaign informing them that Brown’s “Citizens for Bush” is not affiliated with Bush/Quayle ’92, according to a statement by White House spokesman Marlin Fitzwater. The same message — and encouragement not to contribute to Brown’s effort — also went to 85,697 “major contributors” over the signature of the president’s son, George W. Bush. (Emphasis added.)

Right – cos that’s the basis of AWOL’s re-election campaign, “I have higher ethical standards than this particular fat guy from Michigan – no – not him – yeah – that one.”
It’s the relevant consideration, the gold standard for a C-in-C.

It’s not whether the anti-Kerry SwiftVets and other Viet vets are telling the truth, but rather it’s:
WHY DO TWO OUT OF EVERY THREE VIETNAM VETS HATE JOHN KERRY?
What does this say about his leadership ability?
Would our military follow his orders with enthusiasm?
If he ever became president, would he, could he defend America from ther evil men committed to our destruction?
Make no mistake…
AL QAEDA IS CAPABLE OF DESTROYING OUR NATION.
People in the know think they already have several suitcase nukes. If placed strategically in NYC, DC, Chicago, LA, etc. not only would they kill untold millions but they would empoverish us all and leave us almost helpless.
The Swifties and Viet Vets should be considered like the canaries in the coal mine.
We ignore them at our peril.
We need a President who will defend America and doesn’t give a crap about what the EuroSocialist eunichs in France and Germany think about us. They are like your wife during…

WHY DO TWO OUT OF EVERY THREE VIETNAM VETS HATE JOHN KERRY?
And you know this how? Rush tell ya?
But just for a second, let’s say you are right. How am I to react to hearing that two-thirds of my fellow vets are mad at John Kerry? Could it be that two thirds of us are still pissed off at ourselves for being duped into going to that wretched war, but we’re never going to be ready to blame the person responsible in the end for making us go — ourselves? Or maybe two thirds of my fellow vets are dismally stupid twits who still don’t get it about the war? I dunno, you tell me.

Ivor:
Maybe the 2/3rds are pissed at Kerry for libeling them as war criminals. Maybe they are pissed about his blind belief of lies from ‘Vietnam Vets’ who were never in the country – some never even left the US. Maybe those 2/3rds of Vets are pissed at his 19 years of voting against military spending and useful intelligence for our government.
By the by, the 2/3rds number comes from a 1980 – Carter Administration – survey of Vietnam Vets. (http://www.useless-knowledge.com/articles/apr/aug014.html) 2/3rds said they were proud of their service.
That rings more true to me, since all the Vets I know were pissed about Washington’s attempts to run the war from there, and unwillingness to attack North Vietnam. They were pissed about being ‘duped’.
And for the tens of thousands drafted, or who enlisted since being drafted was a near certainty, they should blame themselves for obeying the law and doing their duty?
Better that they had fled the country and gone to Moscow like Clinton, right?
