Balloon Juice

Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

Republicans firmly believe having an abortion is a very personal, very private decision between a woman and J.D. Vance.

The arc of history bends toward the same old fuckery.

White supremacy is terrorism.

When we show up, we win.

Stay strong, because they are weak.

Anyone who bans teaching American history has no right to shape America’s future.

This chaos was totally avoidable.

Bark louder, little dog.

Mediocre white men think RFK Jr’s pathetic midlife crisis is inspirational. The bar is set so low for them, it’s subterranean.

Dear elected officials: Trump is temporary, dishonor is forever.

An almost top 10,000 blog!

If you are still in the gop, you are either an extremist yourself, or in bed with those who are.

Republicans choose power over democracy, every day.

fuckem (in honor of the late great efgoldman)

Republicans don’t want a speaker to lead them; they want a hostage.

In after Baud. Damn.

This has so much WTF written all over it that it is hard to comprehend.

The poor and middle-class pay taxes, the rich pay accountants, the wealthy pay politicians.

Weird. Rome has an American Pope and America has a Russian President.

Never entrust democracy to any process that requires republicans to act in good faith.

They are not red states to be hated; they are voter suppression states to be fixed.

Everything is totally normal and fine!!!

“Perhaps I should have considered other options.” (head-desk)

Technically true, but collectively nonsense

But They Did Not Serve With Him

Drudge is stating that Kerry spoke with the Swift Vets the other day:

Dem presidential hopeful John Kerry personally phoned anti-Kerry swift boat vets, the DRUDGE REPORT has learned.

Kerry reached out to Robert “Friar Tuck” Brant Cdr., USN (RET) Sunday night, just hours after former Sen. Bob Dole publicly challenged Kerry to apologize to veterans.

Brant was skipper of the #96 and # 36 boat and spent time with Kerry in An Thoi. Kerry and Brant slept in the same quarters, and Brant used to put Kerry back to bed at night when Kerry was sleepwalking.

Brant received a call from Kerry at his home in Virginia while he was watching the Olympics on TV.

The call lasted 10 minutes, sources tell DRUDGE.

KERRY: “Why are all these swift boat guys opposed to me?”

BRANT: “You should know what you said when you came back, the impact it had on the young sailors and how it was disrespectful of our guys that were killed over there.”

Why on earth would he call the skipper of another boat? I mean, they did not serve together because they were not on the same boat?

Right, Atrios? Oliver? Kevin? Matt? Jesse? That was the story, right? These swifties were not on the SAME boat as him, so they know nothing about him, right?

Like- they never bunked with him or anything? Right?

Same goes for that Rood journalist. They didn’t serve together, so how can we believe *a word* he sez, huh?

    Cordially…

No no, “they didn’t serve with him” was last week’s meme. This week it’s “he has a friend who’s a Republican, therefore he must be lying and it’s all being coordinated by Bush.”

Plus, the couple of hundred thousand spent by the pro-Bush 527 is far, far more evil than the tens of millions spent by the pro-Kerry 527s. Which all you right wingnuts could see if you had half a brain between you.

I’ll wait until a real news source or one of the principals covers this.

You mean, like how they covered Abu Ghreib when the military tried to brief them on it, or how they covered SBVFT, when they first announced their formation?

Excellent, Oliver (in best Monty Burns tone)!

“These swifties were not on the SAME boat as him, so they know nothing about him, right?”

No. If they weren’t on the same boat as Kerry — or even nearby, they couldn’t speak knowledgably about the events that occurred on Kerry’s boat (events that lead to the awarding of certain military honors). Especially events that took place under the heat of hostile military engagement. And many of the Swift Boat Liars simply weren’t in a position to speak firsthand about the many of the “disputed” claims.

Why is that so hard to grasp that if you are going to say that “Kerry lied” about, say, being wounded on a certain date, you really ought to have been at that spot where the event happened (as opposed to, say, serving “with Kerry” in the same country)? Is that too nuanced for you, or are you all just pretending to be stupid?

But really this whole Swift boat/Cambodia/fragments crap really is uninspiring. Last I checked Churchill embellished almost all of his military adventures yet that in and of itself was not indicative of his (in)ability to lead his country. Give it a rest and bitch about his VVAW activities if we have to go back decades to impugn character. ABK folks will believe everything that detracts from him and ABB people will do likewise. Preaching to the respective choirs gets old afterall.

Actually, I told people Cap Hill Blue just isnt a credible source. A funny accusation coming from the guy who gives nicknames to Drudge and Reynolds, and thinks NewsMax is an authoritative source.

    Hey Oliver –

Does the Associated Press count, or does your “real news source” have to be strictly Soros-backed?

    Just checking.

Nice to see that the waiting-and-seeing method has got some contagion to it, and hoping (but not expecting) a bit more of it from Oliver in the future.

So what do you guys have to say about the fact that O’Neill told Nixon in 1971 that he, O’Neill, had gone into Cambodia. It’s on tape. Now O’Neill is saying he was “near” Cambodia. What a joke — just Sunday he said it was impossible to get to Cambodia on a swift boat.

When this stared, I would have doubted it was possible to conclusively prove that each one of these assertions were intentional, malicious lies. But now its been done — strike four, go directly to hell.

“So what do you guys have to say about the fact that O’Neill told Nixon in 1971 that he, O’Neill, had gone into Cambodia.”

Link? He really said he went into Cambodia with John Kerry?

  17. 17.

    Thomas J. Jackson

    August 24, 2004 at 11:51 pm

O”Neill clearly said he had never been in Cambodia, you ought to check your facts before you use the MoveOn meme.

Only a non veteran could believe that someone who served in a different tank, aircraft, or squad would not know the reputation and activities of someone whose actions would affect their life. Kerry’s canards will be repaid at the polls. The last Dem who tried the war hero routine was McGovern, the public never believed he was fit to lead and the public won’t buy into this song and dance now.

Kerry’s war time antics rank up their with LBJ’s distinguished flying cross, which was also backed by the military-ha, ha.

Now tell me Mr. Stonewall Jackson, did John Kerry gain this “reputation” after the war or during it? It seems people only started to gripe about him during VVAW, not while he was actually in Vietnam.

While Reuters is much more credible than Drudge, the source is still one Swift Boaters word – and while not out of the realm of possiblity – this gang has shown us that they are (pardon my French) fucking liars.

O’Neil said nobody in swift boats were even near Cambodia. But in 1971 he said he was near Cambodia.

    As I said: fucking liar.

Here’s the addresss for the CNN transcript playing the O’Neill/Nixon tape.

    tinyurl.com/6u9nk

Here’s the highlight of the transcript:

The co-author of the book “Unfit for Command,” former swift boat commander John O’Neill said Kerry made up a story about being in Cambodia beyond the legal borders of the Vietnam War in 1968.

O’Neill said no one could cross the border by river and he claimed in an audio tape that his publicist played to CNN that he, himself, had never been to Cambodia either. But in 1971, O’Neill said precisely the opposite to then President Richard Nixon.

O’NEILL: I was in Cambodia, sir. I worked along the border on the water.

    NIXON: In a swift boat?

    O’NEILL: Yes, sir.

    (END VIDEOTAPE)

Every single claim a fucking lie, proven with contemporaneous records and the own liars previous statements on audio and videotape. I’m a trial lawyer, and I’ve never seen something this well debunked, ever.

Of course I have never portrayed Newsmax as an “authoritative source,” nor have I posted anything that could not be confirmed by a 2nd source or did not quote another source.

nypost.com/news/nationalnews/27493.htm – Kerry’s illegal calls to the Swift Boats

You can say “fucking liars” til you’re blue in the face, it doesn’t change that this is a story and Kerry has already had ample opportunity to refute it. Instead he talked to Jon Stewart.

By the way I’d love to see where you told people not to believe Capitol Hill Blue as an “authoritative source,” and also where you told people not to take Media Whores Online (Harkin-gate anyone?), Democrats.com, Democratic Underground and Buzzflash as “authoritative sources.”

Wow, David Brock’s butt-boy is calling somebody else a liar.

    August 25, 2004 at 9:52 am

Ah, so getting a story wrong makes someone a “liar,” Oliver?

One wonders, if we were to go through your web pages, whether you’d ever gotten anything wrong. And whether that would make you a liar.

So, question for you: Kerry was apparently not in Cambodia on Christmas 1968. He has said he was. Does that make him a liar?

  27. 27.

    RW

    August 26, 2004 at 8:14 am

Oliver Willis, you are the last person who is in the position to call someone a liar.

    Really.

That’s almost as laughable as you making commentary about Michelle Malkin’s physical appearance.

You’re much better when you run away from debates that you’re losing than when you’re lying outright about someone (from the comfort of your PC….such courage) because the latter is so easily noticable while the former is more frequent (although it’s a close call).

BTW, tell your buddy Duncan that I’m still waiting for that mea culpa. I’m sure he has the intestinal fortitude to follow through with his own pronouncement, right?
