I can’t believe that any major publication would tolerate the cesspool that the Washington Monthly’s comment section has become. Several years ago, the comments section was readable, but when Kevin took a turn for the left (he saw what his readers liked, and it did get him a new gig, so I am not dissing him), his coments section became unreadable.
That was at Calpundit. It is even worse now.

Wow. Just, wow.
Whenever I read stuff like that I always hear Chief Wiggum saying, “That’s some good hate there boys.”
I didn’t realize that Bush was gay. For tolerant liberals they were sure fixated on calling him gay as an insult.

The slide has been a long time in the making. That is simply terrible though. Why doesn’t he just become a moderator at DU and be done with the conversion? Kevin used to be decent too. That’s the really sad part.

Roses are red dear,
but this blogger is blue
’cause Bushie was AWOL
and he knows it too.
Hey Juicy Boy – how’s that post-convention bounce doing??
RW
According to Gallup, the bounce is allowing Bush to pull away in Mizzou & Ohio and is leading in Penn.
Troll.
John, you might want to do an IP check……I smell JadeGold.

So, John, you’re saying we should go negative in order for you to get a new gig?
m’okay.
If John Kerry has a piece of shrapnel in his thigh, then why hasn’t he set off the magnetometers at the Capitol?
Hmmmmmmm….
Oh…. he doesn’t go there much.
Okay…..
Then why doesn’t Kerry go through extra screening when he flies commericial?
Hmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm?
oh … John Kerry doesn’t fly commercial.
Anyway, if George Bush’s freakin’ dental chart is on the web, I DEMAND that John Kerry’s shrapnel X-Ray be posted on the web as well.
I am OUTRAGED!!!!
I WILL NOT STAND FOR IT!!!!!!!
SIGN SF-180, Senator Kerry – RELEASE THE RECORDS!
that sort of thing?

Yeah well the comments here haven’t exactly been the paragon of reasoned debate either.
And honestly John, pretty much every basic criticism you have of KD in your post applies to you as well. At least since Abu Gharib. Just my opinion.
Sebastian Holsclaw
I wish I could say comments at my own site were rational, but they are even worse–boring.
Obsidianwings (full disclosure–I am a contributor) tends to have the high level reasonable debate that used to be characteristic of CalPundit.

BG- They aren’t that great here, but the WM is horrible. It is almost like Atrios’s site, or Dkos’s.
von
Drum has become utterly fixated on Bush’s National Guard record. I doubt it’ll return to tolerable until after the election.
von
That should be “I doubt it’ll return to tolerable — if it ever returns to ‘normal — until after the election.” I continue to read Kevin, but refuse to look at the comments section.
RW
John,
Back @ his old calpundit site, I remember (distinctly) him making fun of NRO for having readers e-mail them certain things that were objectionable & his retort was something like “it says a lot about them if that’s the audience that they attract”.
Someone can do a search….I’m busy, but I’m 100% sure he said that (it may be the Wkly Std or Townhall, but I know he typed it), dripping with smugness.
Interesting at the crowd he attracts, huh?

Just a one person poll I overheard at last night’s dinner table from my bride who is as apolitical as one can get and is generally more liberal than conservative… when the national news came on the TV in the next room, she stopped eating, listened for a minute and said, “Are they still trying to make hay with Bush’s national guard record? How many times do we have to rehash an issue that was settled months ago?”
Well, it seems that one person in mid-America is weary of the same ol’, same ol’…

Best comment on Drum’s site, re forged docs and IBM typeface developments: “Grr. They should’ve hired Zapf.” gotta laff
