Balloon Juice

Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

Someone should tell Republicans that violence is the last refuge of the incompetent, or possibly the first.

Accused of treason; bitches about the ratings. I am in awe.

The world has changed, and neither one recognizes it.

Not so fun when the rabbit gets the gun, is it?

“But what about the lurkers?”

This fight is for everything.

Fight them, without becoming them!

Usually wrong but never in doubt

Keep the Immigrants and deport the fascists!

If you cannot answer whether trump lost the 2020 election, you are unfit for office.

At some point, the ability to learn is a factor of character, not IQ.

A democracy can’t function when people can’t distinguish facts from lies.

I’ve spoken to my cat about this, but it doesn’t seem to do any good.

Republicans want to make it harder to vote and easier for them to cheat.

“Loving your country does not mean lying about its history.”

So many bastards, so little time.

How any woman could possibly vote for this smug smarmy piece of misogynistic crap is beyond understanding.

Authoritarian republicans are opposed to freedom for the rest of us.

Score One for the Wingnuts

Most reasonable Democrats (and this includes James Carville, Paul Begala, and Michael Moore, so perhaps I am stretching the meaning of the word reasonable) acknowledge that Bush won the 2004 election fair and square. However, the wingnuts will have their say to bring up all the nonsensical charges that there was voter fraud in the 2004 election:

California Senator Barbara Boxer is planning to stand up and join House democrats in their requests for an investigation into the Ohio presidential vote. Certification of the vote takes place today in the Senate and due to Sen. Boxer’s objection, a two hour debate will take place regarding Ohio election irregularities.

Here is what will happen- John Conyers and about 20 other wing-nut members of the Congressional Black Caucus will stand up and each one will discuss the horrible voter suppression and horrible fraud that took place in Ohio. Each wing-nut will come from a seat in which the majority of the electorate is african-american, like Cynthia McKinney, Sheila Jackson Lee, Barbara Lee, and Maxine Waters, John Conyers- aka the usual suspects. They will then raise loads of nonsense, because they know this is merely an attempt to raise questions about a legitimate election. They will do so because they are in such safe, gerry-mandered seats that they can say anything and get away with it.

And what will happen? The rest of the nation will laugh at them and their transparent attempts at race-baiting, and the vote will be certified two hours later. When they Democrats tried to steal Florida in 2000, the result was a large swing towards the GOP, and they now a Republican Governor and two Republican Senators, and Bush won Florida in 2004 by almost 400k votes. MY prediction- the Republican will win the 2008 vote in OHio by 400-500k.

This must be part of the grand strategy Jesse and Ezra were talkng about the other day when they discussed wanting to enlarge the Democratic party- they are doing so by offending the sensibilities of normal voters everywhere, and putting their wing-nuts forward with an open microphone to make laughable claims.

Every time one of their wingnuts opens their mouth today claiming that blacks were disfranchised in Ohio, 10,000 moderate Democrats or Independents in Ohio will become Republicans. Karl Rove has to be behind this.

    And then later..

John, you have a tendency to accuse others of exactly what you are yourself guilty of. Why is a Democrat being suspicious about vote fraud “wingnuttery”, when you without any evidence make a charge that the Democrats tried to steal Florida in 2000?

Make up your mind. Is it wingnuttery to charge others with trying to steal elections, or is it not?

A poor attempt at the accusation of hypocrisy Daryl, in Florida in 2000 the Democrats attempted to corrupt the legal process of counting ballots. That’s not what the Democrats are inventing out of wholecloth with respect to Ohio.

The Republican’s will win the 2008 vote in Ohio by 400-500 thousand? Looks like we’re already getting ready for Plan Diebold 2.0

In fact, the congressional Democrats who spoke today did so respectfully, Boxer included, virtually all of them acknowledging that Bush had won, that Kerry had conceded Bush’s victory, that no one’s trying to change the election outcome.

There was no expression of hatred for Bush or anyone else. None.

What the Democrats did bring up was a whole series of things that ought to be troubling to any serious and fair-minded person. For example, the fact that Ohio Secretary of State J. Kenneth Blackwell, who oversees Ohio elections, was also a co-chairman of the state campaign of one of the presidential candidates. For example, the really curious maldistribution of voting machines and resources, and the obviously poor training many Ohio poll workers had received (unless they were being deliberately unhelpful). The list goes on and on.

All well and good to scoff and dismiss this questioning by Democrats, with your party up and your guy about to start another four years. Just remember, what

I can’t wait to here these same people stand up in Congress and talk about Washington state’s piss poor election…

Washington state’s election was way too close and a few problems came to light, as will happen in any state in any election year.

But make no mistake, the appearance

What about Pennsylvania? That election was closer with a larger population and with credible voting irregularities.
I’m sure S.W., Darryl and Justin think that there should be a spotlight on that election as well? No?

Since 2000, it rarely fails to make me laugh when a liberal/Democrat/lefty charges somebody else with hypocrisy.

It’d be nice if the guys who controlled both Houses of Congress and the Presidency would get serious about setting up some Federal election guidelines.

Kimmitt, which new “election guidelines” would you suggest?

The last time I looked, the states, counties, even townships pretty much controlled how elections are held.

Closer than what, where? Certainly not closer than the gubernatorial race in Washington state.

As far as hypocrisy is concerned, Washington state Republicans are stranded aloft right now

S.W., are you trying to be funny? There were no less “appearances” of impropriety in Washington state. And many of the problems complained of were the responsibility of Democrat election officials at the local level.

Local officials who were themselves the chairs of Kerry campaigns.

    Ah, sweet hypocrisy…

Its sad to see a bunch of race baiting bigots allowed to pull something like this without the press expossing or even addressing the Democrat fraud in Seattle.

I think the GOP should take this opportunity to demand voter ID standrads in Federal elections to end this type of BS on the part of the Democrats. Its time to shut down the voite stealing in Philadelphia, Seattle, St Louis, Cincinatti, etc.

Right, and that obviously isn’t working out so well, so it’s time for Congress, as part of its duty to ensure that each state has a republican (small r) government, to lay down some minimum standards.
