For a while I was addicted to cop dramas: NYPD Blue, Law and Order, The Shield – you name it, I watched it. I liked The Shield for its stark contrast to other shows and its realism. Personally, I think Michael Chiklis should have been cast as Kojak instead of Ving Rhames in the new Kojak movie coming out. Anyone out there agree with me?
For a while, yes, until I discovered “The Wire.” I have a limited amount of free time and decided to give the block allocated to “violent and somewhat realistic cop dramas” to HBO’s show, mostly because The Wire has better bumper music. Okay, I also like the longer story arcs, and the fact that a lot of the public characters are recognizably representations of Bal’mer politicos. The chix are hotter too. And the cops aren’t as painfully stupid as Chiklis’ character’s crew.

No dammit! I can’t get it, I have to follow via DVD
I’m getting season 3 today, I know how I’m spending my Sunday…
The Shield is far and away the best fictional TV show I know of. It’s been a long wait for March 15. Glenn Close should be a nice addition to the cast.

Absolutely! The show borrows a lot from The Sopranos where the protagonist is a “bad” guy with many “good” traits, but since it works so well, give us more. I always hated black and white characters so the Shield’s use of flawed, grey characters is very refreshing. See Michael Mann’s fantastic works for use of this character model in film. I can’t wait to do a marathon session revisiting season 3 on DVD.
