Balloon Juice

Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

“What are Republicans afraid of?” Everything.

Take your GOP plan out of the witness protection program.

Accountability, motherfuckers.

That’s my take and I am available for criticism at this time.

The GOP is a fucking disgrace.

The worst democrat is better than the best republican.

Not all heroes wear capes.

We’ve had enough carrots to last a lifetime. break out the sticks.

Everybody saw this coming.

We cannot abandon the truth and remain a free nation.

No offense, but this thread hasn’t been about you for quite a while.

Make the republican party small enough to drown in a bathtub.

I’m pretty sure there’s only one Jack Smith.

A thin legal pretext to veneer over their personal religious and political desires

You don’t get rid of your umbrella while it’s still raining.

Take hopelessness and turn it into resilience.

People are complicated. Love is not.

Conservatism: there are some people the law protects but does not bind and others who the law binds but does not protect.

Anyone who bans teaching American history has no right to shape America’s future.

“Jesus paying for the sins of everyone is an insult to those who paid for their own sins.”

Nancy smash is sick of your bullshit.

You can’t attract Republican voters. You can only out organize them.

Only Democrats have agency, apparently.

I really should read my own blog.

Living With the Radicals

Many are beginning to recognize that pandering to lunatics like Randall Terry and his supporters was a bad idea:

Florida Gov. Jeb Bush, who has joined fellow Republicans in shameless grandstanding on this case, at least has refused to be pressured by the Schindlers and others to take extraordinary

Impotence in the face of life and death can lead to bad behavior.

Wow, I never thought I would see the words “Read Sullivan” strung together here.

    A) Randall Terry is one of those folks who never met a TV camera/microphone he didn’t like. He plays to the whole ‘more-radical-than-thou’ dynamic that small, insular groups with constant loyalty-checking indulge in.

    B) THe Communist Youth Brigades are acting just as dumb on the other side, grabbing microphones at M. Schiavo’s lawyer’s press conferences to blather on.

    C) I don’t know who should be more embarrassed by this. Actually, I do, but Operation Rescue and the RCB seem fundamentally incapable of shame, embarrassment, or any other emotion which might prevent them from herd-charging a camera.

P.S. Cal Thomas is simply engaging in ‘influence without responsibility’. Check Michael Barone for the rest of the quote.

P.P.S. Barney Frank is calling for some discussion about setting definitions, etc. Praise where praise is due, he seems serious and in good faith. I hope they can limit it to fact-finding and discussion, with a side of ‘Here are some ideas for clarifying matters, states.”

The “Communist Youth Brigade” is almost certainly a ficticious group designed to smear those who are opposed to federal intervention in this case (ala “Billionaires for Bush” or “Communists for Kerry”). To believe otherwise is pretty naieve.

    “Read Sullivan.”

Please forgive me for my reaction to this, which I leave unspoken, he said, giggling.

The CYB might be fictitious *now*, but I do remember them as a real group when I attended UF in the 70’s. A real nutcase group, I should say: they had a cereal box-level comprehension of ideology, and a carnival huckster’s sense of reasoned debate.

They were considered a joke then, even by us lefties.

Your coverage here has been tremendous. Finding common ground on issues like this with somebody who I am likely to disagree strenuously on everything else is always an enlightening experience.

Gives me hope that you might be salvagable… does that work both ways?

The Sullivan link was great, and I’ve enjoyed my time here over the last few weeks. I’ve added you to my listing of adversarial links at my place, and I’ll be stopping by to see what you have to say about “normal” issues.
