Balloon Juice

Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

You can’t love your country only when you win.

Since when do we limit our critiques to things we could do better ourselves?

Republicans do not pay their debts.

Shallow, uninformed, and lacking identity

“Can i answer the question? No you can not!”

Consistently wrong since 2002

No Justins, No Peace

If you tweet it in all caps, that makes it true!

Fuck the extremist election deniers. What’s money for if not for keeping them out of office?

After roe, women are no longer free.

And we’re all out of bubblegum.

Only Democrats have agency, apparently.

I was promised a recession.

They’re not red states to be hated; they are voter suppression states to be fixed.

A snarling mass of vitriolic jackals

A lot of Dems talk about what the media tells them to talk about. Not helpful.

This fight is for everything.

Let’s not be the monsters we hate.

New McCarthy, same old McCarthyism.

White supremacy is terrorism.

I know this must be bad for Joe Biden, I just don’t know how.

That’s my take and I am available for criticism at this time.

Republican obstruction dressed up as bipartisanship. Again.

if you can’t see it, then you are useless in the fight to stop it.

Is there anything more exasperating than catching trackback spammers in the process of spamming you, and struggling to update your MT Blacklist with the new url’s while the assholes are continuing to add hundreds of trackbacks?

No. That’s exactly why I disabled trackbacks.

WordPress has a whole kit of spam-prevention tools, including one that applies the Blacklist to Trackbacks. It’s way better than MT, and I highly recommend it.

WP also publishes everything dynamically. So, if MySQL or PHP crashes, so does your website. I’ll take static pages unless I had 24/7 monitoring. I looked into a “rebuild” function for WP, but it appears that I’d be fighting against their conceptual design. Nevertheless I might write something like that.

As far as deleting spam comments, see Keeping spam under control with MovableType. You’ll need to be able to log into MySQL to use that. I might publish more sample commands at a later date.

That’s why I created anti-spam and simple, instant blacklisting in .Blog.

Quick fix when you catch them at it. Rename mt-tb.cgi to something like mt-tb.cgi.txt… then do the blackslist stuff, and rename it back.

    Good.
    No rebuilding, which sucks.

So, if MySQL or PHP crashes, so does your website.

Well, if anything importatnt crashes, so does your website. IF your MT databases crsh, so does your website. If your MT blacklist isn’t updated & you get mega-spammed, your site crashes.
Backup, backup, backup and then maintain.

It’s much better than MT, IMO, if for no other reason than the rebuilding process. But, that’s my opinion, worth what you paid for it. I can see why some would prefer static…..not me.

If MySQL crashes, my static pages will continue to be served. The only app I’m relying on (AFAIK) is Apache (plus, of course, the daemons, OS, etc.)

It isn’t perfect, but Haloscan kills spam dead dead dead. Saves a bunch of time.

If you were running an ISAPI filter on your webserver to deny the traffic patterns you are seeing you’d be greatly helped.
