Instapundit links to this tale of idiocy, where a man was arrested for paying a bill with $2 bills. That in itself is dumb enough, but this takes the cake:
Finally, Secret Service agent Leigh Turner arrived, examined the bills and said they were legitimate, adding, according to the police report, “Sometimes ink on money can smear.”
This will be important news to all concerned.
For Baltimore County police, said spokesman Bill Toohey, “It’s a sign that we’re all a little nervous in the post-9/11 world.”
Nervous about what? Legal Tender?
When did the deaths of of 3000 people become an excuse for any aberrant behavior by government officals? Toohey’s stupid ass should be fired just for being an idiot.
Sorry we shot your dog. You know- 9/11 and all.
Sorry we beat you nearly to death for speeding. We’re a bit nervous- 9/11 and all.
S.W. Anderson
Or, going by what was reported on “60 Minutes” tonight:
Sorry we squandered $100,000 of your hard-earned money funding the purchase of bomb-proof Dumpsters for the unincorporated town of Whiz Pond, La. and blew another $25,000 buying red suspenders and bulletproof jockstraps for the volunteer firemen of Outhouse, N.M. It’s just that we’ve got to be ready for anything al Qaeda might throw at us.
Karl Rove
Didn’t you get the memo?
9/11 Changed Everything©

Maybe that’s where the 9 billion in “misplaced” funds from the CPA went in Iraq. I always find it funny (ironic) that this must be the only CPA (now that Arthur Anderson is defunct) who cannot balance their books.

Yes, 9/11 changed everything, including how we defend our civil liberties. We have to let go some of the gray areas and be *more* vigilant about the rest. This is no gray area. Fry the city’s checkbook and fire the cop.
If he would have just gotten a very professional pat-down and been kept in a room until he was verified as not passing funny money, there really isn’t a government problem. Non-judicial, instead-of-trial punishments like handcuffing someone to a pole are out of bounds. Baltimore should pay.
