Has there been any serious research into why human beings love pets so much? It seems to me that certain cultures are more in love with pets than others, as well. Part of me simply thinks it fulfills a human need to love and be loved unconditionally, which would explain why one of the signs of sociopaths is cruelty to animals at an earlier age, but that doesn’t explain the cultural divergences.
Just curious.

It’s a side effect of our societal and cultural evolution. Humankind has always put animals to work for him, including cats and dogs. The average household doesn’t need to put their pet to work, but we still have a desire to have one.

W was one of those bad boys who were cruel to animals.

I think pets are that bridge between “people” and “not alive.” Dunno.

The word “pets” distresses me a tad as I look upon the cats and dogs I’ve housed more as “friends.” What I most appreciated about them was the fact that I didn’t have to justify a damn thing to them, nor them to me.
