Senator Santorum has some lofty rhetoric of his own on the filibuster debate:
THE AUDACITY OF SOME MEMBERS TO STAND UP AND SAY, HOW DARE YOU BREAK THIS RULE. IT’S THE EQUIVALENT OF ADOLF HITLER IN 1942 “I’M IN PARIS. HOW DARE YOU INVADE ME. HOW DARE YOU BOMB MY CITY? IT’S MINE.”
Sometimes I just want to start bitch-slapping people.
*** Update ***
This may be one of the best comments ever:
“In Santorum’s defense, he is really really dumb.”
Earlier today, we got this email from an operative:
I just got a call from a friend on the Hill right now, and she said that Senator Santorum was on the steps of the Capitol having his picture taken with a puppy.
A short while later on the Senate floor, he likened his colleagues who support the filibuster to Adolph Hitler.
When President Bush described Republicans as “the party of reform and optimism, the party of ideals and vision” a couple days ago, we thought the imagery was a little abstract. Now we get it. Republicans love puppies. Democrats are Nazis. No wonder a whopping 40% of the respondents of a WSJ/NBC News poll released today said Republicans should control Congress after the 2006 elections, while only 47% said Democrats should.
Thomas
In Santorum’s defense, he is really really dumb.
BlondeContrarian
Godwin’s Law. Santorum loses the debate. Hooray!
Stormy70
Santorum will have a tough reelection fight in Pennsylvania, and this won’t help. Usually, being dumb works for most of the Senate.

I think we should all just spend the week reflecting on the genius of Thomas’s comment.
That is pure genius. LMAO!
Mike
I have to laugh and cry because as funny as Thomas’ comment is, I suspect that there are (too) many voting Americans who agree with the Senator…
shark
I forgot if you had the same kind of pithy comments when Byrd (I believe) used a nazi comparison to those who want to end the filibuster…..
M. Scott Eiland
Yes, it’s a shame to see him sink to the level of Robert Byrd.
John Cole
Actually, I was prett pissed off about it and mentioned it later on when the folks at the Daily Kos attempted to smear Greenspan.
I hate it when people try to ruin people’s lives, and I hate it when people resort to the sort of nonsense my party has been recently engaging in. I carry no torch for either.
Michael Scott
Sen. Man-On-Dog’s “Hitler” comments, combined with Sean Insanity’s savaging of Christian college faculty who oppose the war as “Saddam supporters who just love rape rooms and torture chambers” (as if we don’t continue to operate both) just demonstrate further the utter moral bankruptcy of the Republican Party. Face it, the Party of Lincoln has descended into mindless fascism, the cult of personality surrounding a weak, failed, utterly dissolute war criminal. Now, they’re in their final putsch for power. I, for one, hope they fail.
Incertus
I guess Shark and M. Scott forgot that when Byrd made his Nazi reference, Santorum was one of the folks screeching the loudest about the inappropriateness of the remarks. But then again, should I be surprised?

Hoo-boy…even had to soil my computer by opening O-Chub’s site.
I heard the bite, and, of course, see John’s transcript. Not a sure thing that he wasn’t saying:
…THE AUDACITY OF SOME MEMBERS TO STAND UP AND SAY: “HOW DARE YOU BREAK THIS RULE. IT’S THE EQUIVALENT OF ADOLF HITLER IN 1942 ‘I’M IN PARIS. HOW DARE YOU INVADE ME. HOW DARE YOU BOMB MY CITY? IT’S MINE.'”
IOW, twitting the Democrats for their recorded Godwin’s Law remarks.
Cordially…
patrick
In defense of Robert Byrd, he is really, really senile.

Uh-oh, it’s a stopped clock event. Willis had it right:

Santorum issued his own clarification yesterday evening, stating that the reference to Hitler was “meant to dramatize the principle of an argument, not to characterize my Democratic colleagues.”
“My point was that it is preposterous for someone to trample a well-established principle, and then accuse his opponents of acting unlawfully when they try to reestablish that principle,” Santorum said. “Nevertheless, it was a mistake and I meant no offense.”
