Balloon Juice

Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

This country desperately needs a functioning fourth estate.

This fight is for everything.

One of our two political parties is a cult whose leader admires Vladimir Putin.

Speaker Mike Johnson is a vile traitor to the House and the Constitution.

You can’t attract Republican voters. You can only out organize them.

Bad people in a position to do bad things will do bad things because they are bad people. End of story.

Following reporting rules is only for the little people, apparently.

“Loving your country does not mean lying about its history.”

I’ve spoken to my cat about this, but it doesn’t seem to do any good.

A democracy can’t function when people can’t distinguish facts from lies.

Hell hath no fury like a farmer bankrupted.

I have other things to bitch about but those will have to wait.

There is no right way to do the wrong thing.

Cancel the cowardly Times and Post and set up an equivalent monthly donation to ProPublica.

When your entire life is steeped in white supremacy, equality feels like discrimination.

It’s easy to sit in safety and prescribe what other people should be doing.

Every one of the “Roberts Six” lied to get on the court.

Good lord, these people are nuts.

Motto for the House: Flip 5 and lose none.

“The defense has a certain level of trust in defendant that the government does not.”

Balloon Juice, where there is always someone who will say you’re doing it wrong.

Fuck these fucking interesting times.

Hey hey, RFK, how many kids did you kill today?

Human rights are not a matter of opinion!

Old Boycotts Die Hard

Speaking of unneccessary self-inflicted wounds, how many of you knew this idiocy was still going on:

A conservative Christian group has ended a nine-year boycott of the Walt Disney Co., citing as “positive signs” the departure of Chief Executive Michael Eisner and the release of a film based on the children’s book “The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe.”

Mississippi-based American Family Association said it ended its campaign to stop Disney from “promoting homosexuality” to focus on “new challenges in the culture wars” such as the appointment of federal judges and same-sex marriage laws.

The group called off the campaign without achieving any of the changes in corporate behavior it sought, including a call for Disney to ban “Gay Day” revelers from its theme parks and set up an advisory panel of evangelical Christians.

Make a C.S. Lewis movie, and all of a sudden the fags aren’t a problem any more.

Yeah, didn’t that start when Priest came out? I remember seeing a postcard they sent my grandmother and thinking how weird it was anyone was protesting Disney. I was about 16 then.

While we’re on the subject, how’s Bill O’Reilly’s boycott of France going?

I guess my church never sent me the Boycott Disney memo. Who cares what some pipsqueak Conservative Christian group boycotts anyway? It’s not like they make any difference.

The trailer for Narnia looks awesome, though. I read the books when I was still an atheist, and I loved them. Does that give me street cred with you? Or will this movie be vilified since it was written by a Christian?

Dunno, Stormy. I always assume that you disagree with me because I am a Christian. Why do you hate people of faith?

Yes old Walt would be proud of Eisner’s policies.

I won’t comment on the idiocy of the Disney-boycotters (whoops, I just did), but the Narnia movies look terrific.

After a nine year campaign religious a religious group calls off its boycott with these comments.
The group called off the campaign without achieving any of the changes in corporate behavior it sought, including a call for Disney to ban “Gay Day” revelers from its theme parks and set up an advisory panel of evangelical Christians.
Boy, nine years! This sounds like some uber powerful right wing fundamendalist group wielding unbelievable power and exercising untold powers over the republican administration. Better get Andrew Sullivan and John Cole on it pronto. That’s one poweful organization. Nine years and zip.Thy name is paranoia.

Just so we are clear- Gay-bashing and attempts to promote a theocratic state and divisive politics-by-religion is ok as long as it is ineffective?

I don’t think the point is so much that it was ineffective as much as it is that people can boycott whatever they want for whatever reason they want.

I think these people boycotting Disney because they’re “gay-friendly” is idiotic too, and the Republican party is starting to lose me for a lot of the same reasons it’s losing you (you being John).

But again, people can boycott something for whatever reason they choose.

I absolutley, positively will NEVER buy Ben & Jerry’s Ice Cream because Ben has given money to the cause of Mumia Abu-Jamal. I don’t buy any of Paul Newman’s products for the same reason.

And speaking as someone who spent five years in the Philadelphia Police Department, I think anyone in Law Enforcement who buys those products is insane too, but I don’t force my agenda on anyone.

Your words John, not mine. I said their threat is vastly overrated and overhyped. Gay-bashing is never right. A difference of opinion over policies favored by some gays is not gay-bashing. The “God hates fags” group is gay-bashing and really sick. But to suggest that they are powerful enough to institute a takeover of the government is ludicrous. When it appears to me that they are making headway in instituting a theocratic state I will be shoulder to shoulder with John Cole.

Gosh, I hope there aren’t any honest to goodness gay people involved in the production of Narnia.

*sets timer for next round of complaints from religious pressure groups*

Been to Kansas recently? There’s this little debate, see, about whether to change the definition of ‘science’.

Post again when they reach St Louis on their way to Washington and Ill meet you there. Do I need to bring garlic or anything? I don’t suppose a cross would repel them.

Good; I hope they asked God to call off the hurricanes.
