Balloon Juice

Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

Within six months Twitter will be fully self-driving.

This blog will pay for itself.

This fight is for everything.

Reality always lies in wait for … Democrats.

Good lord, these people are nuts.

Our job is not to persuade republicans but to defeat them.

I’d like to think you all would remain faithful to me if i ever tried to have some of you killed.

Too often we confuse noise with substance. too often we confuse setbacks with defeat.

We’ve had enough carrots to last a lifetime. break out the sticks.

I’m pretty sure there’s only one Jack Smith.

Make the republican party small enough to drown in a bathtub.

I was promised a recession.

Take your GOP plan out of the witness protection program.

“Cheese and Kraken paired together for the appetizer trial.”

So it was an October Surprise A Day, like an Advent calendar but for crime.

When I decide to be condescending, you won’t have to dream up a fantasy about it.

“And when the Committee says to “report your income,” that could mean anything!

Seems like a complicated subject, have you tried yelling at it?

Second rate reporter says what?

“Squeaker” McCarthy

It’s always darkest before the other shoe drops.

My years-long effort to drive family and friends away has really paid off this year.

Innocent people don’t delay justice.

A consequence of cucumbers

Rick Moran has a long piece up taking me to task for, well, a number of things. I will reply later after work.

Good luck in that. His idea of not resorting to ad hominem attacks sure differs from mine.
Telling someone to chill is not considered even modestly polite in the circles I know.

He completely misrepresents what you have been saying. In addition, rather than offer a substantive rebuttal, he resorts to a form of “nah nah boo boo” in rejoinder. Apparently, it’s alright for *him* to get cheesed and take comments personally, but not for you to do so also.

I can’t wait until we get another democrat president. At least then we’ll get our press back. ‘Attacking’ the administration with ‘unnamed sources’ will be considered good journalism then. We wouldn’t have been able to impeach Clinton under the new ‘standards’ of journalism.

BTW, it simply isn’t possible for a right-winger to resist claiming to be a poor over-trod 98 pound nebbish at the complete mercy of that nasty 400 pound MSM gorilla. The hoot is that it is no put-on for him–he actually believes the so-called MSM is (1) all liberal and (2) entirely ascendant in terms of projecting political power. It’s that reality divorce that is so endearing about the right.

His personal world view requires him to claim to be a permanent victim and then to complain about having made himself one.

The PC police still exist–they now work nearly full time for the right wing. I tip my hat to the right’s ability to take the left’s propensity to submit every idea and utterance to a PC standard and turn it all completely on its head by playing ever the more mistreated, sadsacked victim. (Of course, when the PC police are given time off by the right, they go to schools and courthouses
and complain about things like Christmas carols and Bible–but that’s their avocation, not a vocation any more.)

Still, as he is a Drake grad, I cannot hold anything against him–my uncle taught journalism there for years.

My one major issue with wingnuts is how they change what I’m really saying to fit what they believe I’m saying. If I rant on torture or other things the miltiary has done it has nothing to do with hating the military or wishing they would lose. its their leadership I have a problem with. The civilian leadership. They put the soldiers there and so are responsible for what the soldiers do. Its a lot easier to label an antiwar protester as a traitor to this country than to acknowledge that elected officials got us into an ugly mess.

He seems to have articulated himself very well. He looks to have thought it out carefully before making his stand. Whether you agree with him or not, it is a well worded alternative point of view. He does so without getting personal or nasty. Much better than what I usually read when someone questions someone else’s opinion these days. My hats off to Rick for that.

By the way I am by no means saying I agree with Rick. I would rather read Mr. Cole’s response first. I live for these kinds of dsicussions.

“I look at his defection as temporary, a momentary fever…”

We used to call this treason.

And there it is. John, you’re being targeted because you’re not towing the movement line exactly as they want you to/dictate. Stop thinking for yourself man and get back to the talking points.

The clear implication here is that he only respects your ability to be “logical and inspiring” as long as you are supporting his viewpoint. Unfortunately for him (and the rest of us), when ideologically driven people run up against the logic wall, they just invent new logic (see LaShawn’s ‘defense’), which isn’t really logic at all.

Put-on? Hmmmm, I wonder where Rick Moran might’ve gotten the notion that the media is almost all liberal? It’s almost as if he’s heard this from someone on the inside, maybe a member of the White House Press Corp, who frankly has told him in conversation how the MSM reporters really think.

I just wonder how Rick Moran might possibly have access to a major media figure in the Press Corp…possibly someone from a network.

Possibly someone who has been on the radio this week talking about how the media does generally lean hard, anti-military left…

    It’s a puzzler!

It doesn’t even matter if it’s true or not, comp, you get to play the victim game too. Sure beats responsibility. Things going bad for you? Not your fault, poor dear.

In a world of Rush and Sean and Bill and Joe and Ann and Neil and Nancy and Michelle and Peggy and Brit and Mr. Moon and Mr. Murdoch and Mr. Ailes and on and on, you simply aren’t going to convince people who are not wingnuts that the entire media is liberal and that is why you aren’t getting your way every time you stamp your feet in that cute but petulant manner you have.

You have yourself convinced, but the victim thing is not working for you anymore. Get a new schtick.

But, as I said, if it takes a Moran to confirm your worldview, then go with it. Remember, a reporter such as Moran is automatically wrong when he says something you disagree with and instantly correct when he says something you already hold dear and need to have confirmed.

Moran and I have exchanged a few posts over on his site. He jumped ad hominem at first reply; always an indicator of an uncertainty of one’s position.

In a world of Rush and Sean and Bill and Joe and Ann and Neil and Nancy and Michelle and Peggy and Brit I don’t see a single news presenter named. Not one of these people claims, as do the likes of Dan Rather, to be giving us central fact devoid of opinion.

Is it a fact that the left is using Abu Ghraib and other abuse stories to skewer the Bush Administration and try to undermine the war effort? The question answers itself. Demanding that the press treat this issue more carefully by getting their fact [sic] straight is hardly cause for accusing bloggers of wanting to hide the truth. How about a little context? How about a little fairness?

My first question for this fine person would be, “please explain exactly how you would contextualize torturing likely innocent people to death? How exactly should I evaluate the fairness of a story involving reporting on factual examples of the use of violating religious taboos for intelligence?”

Damn, I thought “society as text” and pomo analysis whatnots were academic attacks on religion. I need to update my score card, I guess.

Moran is truly pathetic. He posts all sorts of reactionary nonsense on his appropriately named “Right Wing Nuthouse,” then spends the rest of his slacker day deleting responses that he can’t handle. The irony here is that this self-styled defender of liberty, like so many of his ilk on the extreme right, has become little more than an apologist for torture and a president who took us to war on nothing but lies.
