If John Cole is indeed a Republican, I think it would be more accurate to say that he is “registered” as a Republican. As to conservative, I’m not so sure. You might want to consider a slander suit.

If you were described as a ‘mossback conservative’, they would have come closer to describing you. Not as a reactionary but as one who has a set of dedicated principles & is willing to stand for them. But since I’m a personal libertarian & political liberal- I get confused easily.
