Could someone please explain what exactly it was the Rev. Fred “God Hates Fags” Phelps and crew were protesting?

Kimmitt is exactly right. It’s the logical extension of what Falwell claimed after 9/11. America deserved 9/11 because of our support for the “radical homosexual agenda” (etc). So the war on terrorism is a war to _protect_ the homos, so everyone who dies in the war is a homo-lover.
Wonderful logic there, but that’s Phelps.

I don’t know the details to the backstory, but from following Instapundit’s links in re: this story I learned that apparently some gov’t agency bombed some of his property several years ago and he’s taken to protesting any soldier’s funeral he can make it to because he believes their deaths are God’s revenge on the U.S.
That’s his so-called rationale.

It’s funny that we’re asking “Why do they hate us?” about Phelps. I wonder if we’ll find the answers worth dwelling on for as long as we spent on the answers to that question when applied to Muslim Fanatics…

He thinks that God has cursed America because of the bombing mentioned earlier (the government also raided his place.) He thinks that 9/11 happened because of this, and because of our tolerance of homosexuality. He also thinks that God hates Sweden (tolerance of gays, again), and sent the Tsunami to kill them. (Apparently all those Indonesians et al were just collateral damage.)
So, in his twisted mind, IEDs are from God. Or something.

Fred Phelps is insane, probably schizophrenic. I don’t care that much about him but I feel sad about what he has turned his daughters into. Must be some kind of abuse, emotional I suppose.

I read someone claim Phelps is in this for the money, hoping he will be physically attacked and then suing for damage. Sounds reasonable to me, at least in that he might keep his operation afloat that way.
