The Republicans better hope their gambit works, because they sure seem to be giving it the full-court press:
Regardless of such troubles, the convention began Friday with a fiery speech from House Majority Leader Tom DeLay of Sugar Land, who arrived at the podium to a standing ovation.
In front of a banner reading, “We get the party started!”, DeLay, like other speakers at the Friday event, rallied the young Republicans with harsh words about the Democrats.
“The trend isn’t just about liberal rhetoric, it’s about a disturbing liberal psychology,” DeLay said. “A bizarre, knee-jerk reflex to assume the world’s worst problems are America’s fault.”
DeLay also defended White House adviser Karl Rove, who came under fire for a New York speech he made Wednesday in which he accused “liberals” of wanting to “offer therapy and understanding for our attackers” after the Sept. 11, 2001, strikes.
DeLay said: “That is not slander, that is the truth.”
Full speed into the breach!

Campus progress has two “ringers” at the College Republican Convention, who have been reporting on the goings on.
So far, not a single speaker appears to have told these supporters of the war in Iraq that it is their duty to enlist. Indeed, at least one speaker went so far as to create an equivalence between the sacrifices being made by our troops, and the “time” that College Republicans are spending promoting their agenda.
oh, and if you haven’t heard of Operation Yellow Elephant yet, do visit Jesus’s General…

Check out this video of Delay. I can’t remember the last time I was that drunk.

I say, keep it up, Tom, and Karl. Pour it on. These guys are so wrapped up in their own bullshit that they have no idea what ordinary people are thinking out here in the real world. These guys are an embarassment to every sentient and responsible Republican. People are starting to wonder if these guys have totally lost their minds.
You go, Tom! Kill ’em Karl!
Remember just a couple of weeks ago when we were all arguing over whether Dean had overreached?
Bwaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaahahahahaha!
These GOP hotshots have totally lost it, figuratively and literally. I hope they really pour it on. Karl, if you’re listening, how about a trip to Oklahoma City to announce that Liberals caused the bombing of the Federal Building?
Then, on to Colorado to announce that Liberals caused the school shootings! Bandeh Aceh to announce that Liberals sent the tsunami!
Go, go go!
Jeff
“How about a trip to Oklahoma City to announce that Liberals caused the bombing of the Federal Building?”
Actually, President Clinton already told us who caused that, he said it right after it happened. It was right-wing talk radio.
Rick
John,
Say, this reminds me: how’s your campaign against the uniquely corrupt Tom DeLay going? That was your hobby horse a few months ago, before some more recent news came out about Congressional practices.
Cordially…

Great comment, Jeff … if you had made it 8 years ago.
Unfortunately, that was then, and this is now.

Yes, those young Republicans are getting schooled by the greats (Delay, Horowitz, and others). Gosh, I yearn for my days as a college Repub. All we had in those days was Ronnie Raygun, Ollie North, and the rest of the Iran Contra croud.

hey John! I’m proud to be a complete incompetent when it comes to figuring out how to create links to documents!
Far North
Jeff,
If I remember correctly, Oklahoma City was casued by a right-wing terrorist. But I don’t remember Clinton saying that talk radio caused it. Everyone knows that a right wing terrorist that liked to listen to right-wing talk radio blew up the federal building in Oklahoma.
At least the Islam fanatics blow themselves up, too.

Ah, Rick. What a surprise that you’re a fan of Delay.

Hello, I was in OKC, and they were also looking for two Middle Eastern men within 2 hours. Nichols and McVeigh had help, but the feds under Clinton, came in and took over, and washed those connections under the rug.
My husband was two blocks away when that bomb went off, on the anniversary of Waco (Clinton’s debacle). I was 15 miles away and it felt like an earthquake hit. The Feds just this year found more evidence under Nichol’s home that was missed years ago. That investigation was a sham, and I am not a conspiracy chick. OKC bombing is the last thing you guys should be bringing up to bash the right on. I don’t bash the left for ELF’s shennanigans, because they are a lunitic fringe group.
Rick, I wondered if John would follow up on Delay, now that it appears all the Dems were taking the same trips. Also, the lobbyest’s cleared it with the Ethics Committee before hand.
I love me some Delay and Rove. Bring it on!
I must warn you, I have been baking in 97 degree heat at the company picnic, and I got a dragon tatoo painted on my arm. I am feeling fiesty, and contrary.
Stormy70
Oh my God, I am only on my first beer. Tragic.

The Repubs have a big problem. There’s this little matter of ripping off the Indians by some big-ticket names associated with it: Grover Norquist, Ralph Reed, Tom Delay. And of course, Tom Delay has held up legislation that would close down the sweat shops in Saipan, with evidence suggesting he received campaign donations for his efforts. With the exception of Norquist, these fine people claim to be moral Christians. Norquist just claims to be selfish and greedy.
And what is the response of these slime ball’s supporters? Eyes tightly closed shut, hands over their ears, screaming nah nah nah nah as loud as they can.
Then we’ve got Karl Rove who has no compunctions about ruining people’s lives. But all’s fair in politics, at least as far as this scum bag is concerned. Perhaps he’ll follow Lee Atwater’s lead, who while dying of brain cancer worried about getting into heaven because of all the scummy things he did. And boy did he need to worry.
So, Stormy, Darrell, Rick and the other supporters of this trash: You are SO welcome to them.
Rick
Soj,
Thanks; I cheerfully accept them, sparing the U.S. such indignities as Speaker Pelosi, and committee chairman such as Waxman and Conyers.
Your own abode needs tending.

Interesting that there are about 200,000 College Republicans. No doubt most of these people are enthusiastic supporters of the war and will be enlisting shortly. That should help solve our recruitment problems.
I’m guessing the Armed Forces have recruiters at the convention, and that they are being overwhelmed with volunteers. Funny I didn’t see much about that in the story.
Sojourner
Rick:
Please share with us the “crimes” of these Dems and how they compare with the sleeze balls in your party. As a reminder, holding the Bush Administration accountable is neither illegal nor unethical. In fact it’s actually patriotic.
Rick
Soj,
You’ve criticized my icons, but haven’t identified crimes. So I’ll await your elaboration.
I’m appalled/chagrined (insert a gob-smacking Andrew Sullivanism of choice) by the whack jobs that rise to the surface of the Democratic party. I’m as entitled to my loathing as you are to yours. Agreed.
BTW, all: is everyone here opposed to violent crime, and housefires? If so, why aren’t you all rushing out to become cops and firefighters?
Cordially…

If so, why aren’t you all rushing out to become cops and firefighters?
In my case, I’m well past the eligibility age. More generally:
There doesn’t seem to be a major recruitment problem, and if there is I would support taxes to increase pay and benefit levels to attract more people. Try that on the College Republicans.
No one is being coerced into serving as a cop or firefighter. People are being coerced into service in Iraq. That means that those who support the war and are able to serve have a moral obligation to do so. Of course, from Vietnam we have a clear picture of how seriously conservatives take this sort of obligation. Morality is fine as long as it doesn’t actually require you to do something you’d prefer to avoid doing.
I’m not suggesting that these eager beavers undertake a military career. Just enlist for a few years – after all we are in a state of emergency, are we not?
Crime and fire are not an emergency. They do not represent the degree of danger that terrorism and Iraq do, we are told. Surely you don’t think the threats are comparable.
Sojourner
I described some of the most recent crimes of Delay, Norquist and Reed in a previous message.
For an extensive discussion of Rove’s slimey activities, check out
Bush’s Brain
by James Moore & Wayne Slater. It’s a thorough and well-documented review of a man who seems to lack any principles other than the desire to win.
Rick
Soj.,
Thanks, but as I evaded the Coulter/Tyrrell (some would not they were thorough and well-documented) ouevre in the 90s, I damn sure ain’t going to patronize screeds from the other side.
You described “crimes” on this thread? No, you haven’t even alluded to any.
Suffice it to say, there are folks who primly believe that political opposition is immoral and, well, there ought to be a law against it. Especially when such miscreants are winners. They’re found on both sides (many of my co-conservatives chastised Clinton in the same language, and for the same reasons, as you. That is, his Presidency was a fraud and a national humiliation), and I’m not their customer.
Rather, if such evil lurks in the hearts of men, I have full confidence in the reliably left-of-center broadcast and national print media to play the part of The Shadow. Dan Rather validated this faith o’ mine.
No matter what the alleged corporate boardroom preferences. For that matter, I feel the NYT quite fully reflects its suits. More than Fox, for that matter.
So until you outlaw me, I remain yours, cordially…
