Yeah they’re good.
And what radio station plays Spoon??? Is it an indie station or something?

they’re great. I’ve been listening to them since they started. Pick any of their albums blindfolded and it won’t matter quality-wise, although the new album is called “Gimme Fiction,” FYI.

You listen to Radio Friggin’ Moscow?! Ye gods, John, you really have turned liberal on us!

I have always listened to NPR. Always. I was a DJ for years, and no one days radio better, IMHO.
I like Car Talk, What Do You Know, All Things Considered, I love Live from the Met.
No one does it better, IMHO. WV Public radio is spectacular. Plus- we have Mountain Stage.

John: I was kidding (lamely).
NPR is very big with my (overwhelmingly left-liberal) colleagues. I’ve heard more than one boast that they would only listen to NPR–it’s an us versus them thing–and one (a friend) likes to suggest that I don’t listen to it because I’m a right-wing troglodyte.
It makes me laugh, because for my liberal friends, listening to NPR is very much a political act. For my conservative friends, it’s about the quality of the programming. What little NPR I’ve listened to I’ve enjoyed, and next time I pass through WV I’ll try to tune in.

Great station, the best!

Great Bands. Great station. All from us Minnesotans to you, (you can thank me later)

Austin band, ’nuff said. Great music.

I tend to find Spoon overrated, personally, but a lot of folks disagree. They’re certainly dahlings of the indie world, and they’re close enough to the edge of mainstream pop to get airplay outside of college radio, NPR and the other usual indie outlets.
As for the mention, above, of the Hold Steady, all I can say is “OH MY GAWD! RAWK!!” I freakin’ love the new CD.
Gorillaz, though, I believe, are not from Minnesota.

no no no, The Current is from Minnesota, stationed in down town St Paul. It’s a brilliant success and a slap in the face to all the corporate sludge they pump out on all the commercial stations. Some of those stations haven’t changed their playlists in 25 years.
The Current comes along and says: “Let’s trust our listeners and our DJs. Let the DJs play anything they want and the audience will be there” And guess what? They were. It’s radio for music lovers by music lovers and brought to you by your friendly government funded public radio network. It would have never happened in the commercial world. People were leaving that dredge for their iPods in droves. I mean, you can only listen to Stairway to Heaven so many times.

Ah, I just saw Spoon perform live in Austin this past weekend. Excellent show. My favorite is Kill the Moonlight, though the new album is very good as well.

John:
I’m a big Spoon fan (and have most of their albums). I’m assuming you heard something off of Gimme Fiction, their newest album (most likely “The Beast and Dragon, Adored” if I had to guess).
If you like the sound, then I recommend picking up either Kill the Moonlight or Girls Can Tell. Both albums are quite good (I like the songs on GCT better, but I think that KtM is a more cohesive album). Picking up GCT and listening to it once made me a devoted Spoon fan, so I think you’ll be in good hands with that album.
The new album is quite good, but isn’t as immediately awesome as the other two; [em]Gimme Fiction[/em] took me a few listens to get into, and I’m still not liking it as much as the two albums prior.

If you like Spoon, you should also check out Robbers on High Street, they sound pretty similiar, but are different enough. They just came out with their first album.
