Balloon Juice

Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

This country desperately needs a functioning Fourth Estate.

Balloon Juice, where there is always someone who will say you’re doing it wrong.

You can’t attract Republican voters. You can only out organize them.

It’s easier to kill a dangerous animal than a man who just happens to have different thoughts/values than one’s own.

The poor and middle-class pay taxes, the rich pay accountants, the wealthy pay politicians.

It’s the corruption, stupid.

If West Virginia and San Francisco had a love child.

Come on, man.

Republicans don’t lie to be believed, they lie to be repeated.

The media handbook says “controversial” is the most negative description that can be used for a Republican.

The Giant Orange Man Baby is having a bad day.

It’s a new day. Light all those Biden polls of young people on fire and throw away the ashes.

That’s my take and I am available for criticism at this time.

If you tweet it in all caps, that makes it true!

Authoritarian republicans are opposed to freedom for the rest of us.

There is one struggling party in US right now, and it’s not the Democrats.

The fundamental promise of conservatism all over the world is a return to an idealized past that never existed.

Balloon Juice has never been a refuge for the linguistically delicate.

Shallow, uninformed, and lacking identity

Anyone who bans teaching American history has no right to shape America’s future.

Fight them, without becoming them!

If you are in line to indict donald trump, stay in line.

Jack be nimble, jack be quick, hurry up and indict this prick.

fuckem (in honor of the late great efgoldman)

The Plame Game

It seems this story is sending chills through the left wing of the blogosphere:

Now that Time Inc. has turned over documents to federal court, presumably revealing who its reporter, Matt Cooper, identified as his source in the Valerie Plame/CIA case, speculation runs rampant on the name of that source, and what might happen to him or her. Tonight, on the syndicated McLaughlin Group political talk show, Lawrence O’Donnell, senior MSNBC political analyst, claimed to know that name–and it is, according to him, top White House mastermind Karl Rove.

Here is the transcript of O’Donnell’s remarks:

“What we’re going to go to now in the next stage, when Matt Cooper’s e-mails, within Time Magazine, are handed over to the grand jury, the ultimate revelation, probably within the week of who his source is.

“And I know I’m going to get pulled into the grand jury for saying this but the source of…for Matt Cooper was Karl Rove, and that will be revealed in this document dump that Time magazine’s going to do with the grand jury.”

Other panelists then joined in discussing whether, if true, this would suggest a perjury rap for Rove, if he told the grand jury he did not leak to Cooper.

We shall see. Talk Left has more here, here, and here.

*** Update ***

O’Donnell in the Huffington Post:

I revealed in yesterday’s taping of the McLaughlin Group that Time magazine’s emails will reveal that Karl Rove was Matt Cooper’s source. I have known this for months but didn’t want to say it at a time that would risk me getting dragged into the grand jury.

McLaughlin is seen in some markets on Friday night, so some websites have picked it up, including Drudge, but I don’t expect it to have much impact because McLaughlin is not considered a news show and it will be pre-empted in the big markets on Sunday because of tennis.

Since I revealed the big scoop, I have had it reconfirmed by yet another highly authoritative source. Too many people know this. It should break wide open this week. I know Newsweek is working on an ‘It’s Rove!’ story and will probably break it tomorrow.

Ok.

He is the advisor to President Bush currently. If this last bit of news is true, his next job will be making license plates, cleaning up road side trash and being someone’s boy-toy. Couldn’t happen to a nicer guy as far as I am concerned.

Well, it’d certainly be sad to see that some of the president’s guys were playing revenge in such a foolhardy way.

Why do you think this is sending a ‘chill’ through the left wing blogosphere? I would think this would send a euphoric rush through it.

If this is true, at last there will be justice for Rove.

    chills? More like goosebumps!

However, I don’t think that Rove was the leaker — instead, I think that Fitzgerald is going to go after Rove for obstruction of justice/perjury.

Lets face it, the minute that the Plame outing started blowing up in Bushco’s face, Rove would have been on the case finding out who had leaked it to Novak in order to be able to deal with the political damage. And I will bet that Rove denied knowing who the leaker was when he first spoke to the investigators….

    That’s obstruction of justice.

The more I look at this stuff, the more I wish that McCain had beaten GWB’s ass in 2000. This wouldn’t be happening right now.

    Novak, 2003:

During a long conversation with a senior administration official, I asked why Wilson was assigned the mission to Niger. He said Wilson had been sent by the CIA’s counterproliferation section at the suggestion of one of its employees, his wife. It was an offhand revelation from this official, who is no partisan gunslinger. When I called another official for confirmation, he said: “Oh, you know about it.”

I have a feeling Rove may be official #2 at worst.

Besides the consideration above, it appears Ms. Plame was no longer playing the Diana Rigg role in “The Avengers,” since her employer believed for a good number of years that her cover was blown by Aldrich Ames.

He’s a conductor. He didn’t write the piece, or hire the fiddlers, but he’s a damn-fine conductor.

He’s also about the worst of the political insiders there is, and I hope he burns in hell. But give the man his due: he’s incredibly good at what he does.

So, does anyone remember this piece penned by Robert “Holy Shit I May Have Just Inadvertently Committed Treason” Novak back in summer of 2003? Well, it fittingly launched a vigorous federal investigation as it outed Valerie Plame, exposing her as a c…
