Crap. I was just beginning to come to terms with how to handle one vacancy. Now Bush will get Gonzalez and his fundie-pleasing extremist.
I can only hope this turns out to be wrong.

If true, this simplifies matters for Bush. He can appoint one wingnut and one real judge, and look like a “uniter”. The Dems will have little choice but to allow both nominations to go through…
and I suspect that a whole lot of pressure was placed on Rhenquist to quit in order to get Bush out of the mess he found himself in….
Chris
But nothing more than two right wingers will satisfy Bush’s base. Remember, to change the court, O’Connor and Rehnquist have to be replaced with right wingers. To overturn Roe, which is all the fundamentalists are really interested in, they need to get somebody right of Gonzo for the O’Connor, Rehnquist and a possible Stevens/Ginsburg opening.

I’m not so sure, Paul. It could depend on the order in which they’re nominated. If Gonzales goes first and the Dems let him through, then Bush sends up an extremist, I still think the Dems can block it without losing support. When they’re accused of being obstructionist, they have recent evidence in their favor. They can just say “look, he nominated someone we don’t like, and we approved him without a fight. We aren’t the ones creating the friction.”
