Balloon Juice

Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

A sufficient plurality of insane, greedy people can tank any democratic system ever devised, apparently.

I wonder if trump will be tried as an adult.

There are consequences to being an arrogant, sullen prick.

Conservatism: there are some people the law protects but does not bind and others who the law binds but does not protect.

Republicans: slavery is when you own me. freedom is when I own you.

… riddled with inexplicable and elementary errors of law and fact

Good lord, these people are nuts.

You can’t love your country only when you win.

Motto for the House: Flip 5 and lose none.

The worst democrat is better than the best republican.

Yeah, with this crowd one never knows.

He wakes up lying, and he lies all day.

Bark louder, little dog.

The truth is, these are not very bright guys, and things got out of hand.

We’ll be taking my thoughts and prayers to the ballot box.

They think we are photo bombing their nice little lives.

It’s always darkest before the other shoe drops.

Putin must be throwing ketchup at the walls.

Is it irresponsible to speculate? It is irresponsible not to.

When someone says they “love freedom”, rest assured they don’t mean yours.

I’m sure you banged some questionable people yourself.

Jack Smith: “Why did you start campaigning in the middle of my investigation?!”

The next time the wall street journal editorial board speaks the truth will be the first.

Wow, I can’t imagine what it was like to comment in morse code.

Rafy Palmeiro…. what is this going to do for his Viagra position? Great quote from Costas the other night on Palmeiro: (paraphrasing) “This guy was getting wood.”

Catch the article about Novak in the Times? It raises the point again that Novak may have learned of Plame’s name and connection to Joe Wilson through “Who’s Who in America”. Now, wtf reads that book is what I would like to know. I am not a reporter. I don’t know reporters. But is that where reporters go to find their info about people? Novak has got to be jerking the press’s chain with this one…. funny to watch them take the bait, too.

Gordon Ramsay should quit being the best chef in England, move to LA, and become a Reality TV host. “Hell’s Kitchen” was his first effort, and he’s already the best in the business…although they should move the show to HBO, so you can hear his inventive swearing.

Stormy, I’ve been reading the update board and there is a small chance it could be Janelle going home. Maggie and her side might want Kayser to hang around to help get rid of James. It would be kind of stupid of them, since Kaysar is the bigger threat, but ya gotta have hope.

I don’t mind Howie, and if Kays goes I will root for him. As long as Ivette doesn’t win I’ll be happy.

The Who’s Who quotation just shows what a tempest in a teapot this is. You could find out that Valerie Plame was a CIA operative JUST BY LOOKING IN WHO’S WHO. For all we know, that is how Rove found out. How can this possibly continue to be an issue?

Has Fitz subpoened the editors of Who’s Who yet?

  16. 16.

    TallDave

    August 2, 2005 at 12:22 pm

    DougJ,

Well, to be fair, you could find Plame in WW but not her status as a CIA operative.

Rove found out from the media, where it was widely known. Of course, it’s really a non-issue, because Plame was no longer covert by then. Fitzgerald is only pursuing this because it’s possible one person — Judith Miller’s source — disclosed Plame’s identity at a time when Plame was still covert.

I don’t know why Dems think this issue helps them; I guess it’s Rove Derangement Syndrome at work. Every time this comes up the public is reminded again the Dems embraced Joe Wilson’s lies about a matter of national security for partisan gain.

Yes. I heard that “Who’s Who” has a special edition where they list agent’s identities. That’s how they caught Robert Hanssen you know… plus Plame must have wanted to be caught if she had a valid driver’s license.

Prove it, Doug. Not everything you read on the rightwing websites is true.

Are you saying that Who’s Who violated national security laws? Do you know where they get most of their information on people they list? From the listees’ own biography submissions. Do you think that Ms. Wilson identified herself as a covert CIA employee to them, for publication? The putative entry is actually Joe Wilson’s listing; do you suppose that he outed his wife through that publication?

Produce the Who’s Who listing which proves your assertion, or shut the fuck up.

In fact, her occupation, as far as any public view is concerned, was always reported as being an employee of a “company” which was used as a CIA cover. The association of the company to the CIA was a secret.

The Who’s Who listing would have identified her as Mr. Wilson’s wife, not as a CIA operative.

While you are looking this up, please produce any Who’s Who listing which describes a subject as being a covert operative for the CIA. Anyone at all.

Shut up, you lying stupid sack of shit.

That was a very smart move. It will give him great experiance. I heard somewhere that over 80% of new restaraunts go down within a year. By taking Ramsey up on that offer he’ll get vastly more experiance than simply winning a reality show.

I like Janelle, but Kayser (Soze) is one of the best players in the game. I hope he can be saved, and James needs to be taken out…stat!

I think Kayser will win the veto. Then James’ GF will go up, unfortunate because she’s the cutest girl in the house. I’d rather see Eric’s whole team go down one by one than anything else after this week.

Well, almost anything else. The European version has nudity which the contestants this year are very well suited for.

I think Kevin Drum’s got a pretty good take on this latest Plame twist. In short, he says this 1) contradicts Novak’s earlier statements and 2) doesn’t really make any sense from a reporting perspective. In essence, would a fifty year reporting veteran have use Who’s Who to get the name of Wilson’s wife?

    Oh, the inanity!

Wilson’s wife name has never been a secret. As Wilson himself has stated, his wifes name was Valerie Wilson, or Mrs. Joe Wilson. Many people knew her as Valerie Plame, as we now live in the age of women keeping their unmarried names after marriage.

Not a secret. Not an issue here. Not relevant.

It wasn’t her name that mattered, it was her status as a CIA operative that mattered, and is relevant. That, and only that.

All of this “who is Joe’s wife” bullshit is nothing but a red herring, floated out there by the lying and scheming cocksuckers who have an interest in muddying the water. It has NOTHING TO DO WITH THE CASE.

Actually, I think he is a very skilled panderer. He wants the issue “discussed”, and no reasonable person could be against “discussion” of the issue. If it’s part of a general discussion of the role and standing of science, and it’s done in a “reality based” way, I don’t see a problem with it.

It’s when ID is presented as a viable alternative to science, that I have a problem. It is not, and should not be presented as such.

    Over here as well.

John McCain, John Warner or Lindsey Graham . . . are giving the White House fits with their attempt to get legislation approved that would expressly prohibit cruel, inhumane or degrading treatment of detainees in U.S. custody.

There was a dramatic encounter during the floor debate last week when Senator Jeff Sessions, a Republican from Alabama, spoke out against the legislation, saying there was no need for it because, as he put it, the detainees are not prisoners of war, “they are terrorists.”

Senator McCain, of Arizona, argued that the debate
“is not about who they are. It’s about who we are.” Americans, said Mr. McCain, “hold ourselves” to a higher standard.

Yes, Deadwood rocks. I missed the first season, but went back and watched them all on OnDemand. Swearagen (sp?) is the entire show, the scenes without him just fill the time until he shows up. The Wire, even though I only started watching season 3, is also excellent. I am going to get the first season DVD’s from NetFlix. Galtactica is great, but the amount of commercials weigh it down a bit.

When you go to Morty’s, click the “Live Feed” update links. There are people who transcribe the feeds in almost real time. Sh*t, between that site and here I am really falling behind in work.

What I liked about the Boiling Point show is that you saw that there were two sides to Ramsey. He could be a total bastard if you screwed up, but was just as quick to reward good behaviour. On HK he seemed just to be angry all the time — didn’t appear to show the same level of fairness as on Boiling Point. I guess the difference would be the Brit show was true reality TV, the American show was “Reality” TV – manufactured for higher drama.

I also couldn’t stand the contenstants on HK. Bunch of spoiled, entitled cry-babies. The Brit chefs on BP seemed to have thicker skins and an ability to take criticism. Would be completely wrong to make any broad conclusions of eash society based on these shows, but it sure is an interesting starting point. When did Americans become such cry-babies? Are most Americans cry-babies, or just the sort that want to be on reality shows?

I caught the first few episodes but kind of lost interest. It did start out better than I imagined, but somehow it lost a bit of steam for me.

I mean, really they are going to pick a guy, seems pointless to even have female contestants. Anyone who goes to an INXS concert, should they ever have another, is going to want to hear the old songs sounding as close as possible to what they remember. Hence, they will need a singer who sounds as much as possible like the first singer. I don’t think anyone is going to want to hear anything from “the new CD”.

Some people are huggers, some are not. My family (of Irish stock) are not big into the hugging. My wife’s family (Italian) are major huggers. Takes some getting used to.

I think in the case of reality TV, it may be encouraged by the producers. It creates a more family-like atmosphere which only adds to the drama of future betrayals. Also, people may be adopting a persona for TV — I know i’d rather be seen as a gregorious hugger on TV than the actual Marcus with freakishly poor social skills!

New companion book to “Who’s Who” just came out called “Who’s Where”. I took a look and learned that Osama is in the mountains of Afghanistan/Pakistan and that Saddam is in an undisclosed trailer wishing he had pressed his lips against Bush’s nutsack like Musharraf.

Lesson: even if you are the leader of a country with nuclear weapons and loads of terrorists, kissing Bushy balls can keep you alive.

If the Iraqi had been getting hugged by Americans, the media would have called it torture.

    But what about these guys?

“Simply stated, there is no doubt that Saddam Hussein now has weapons of mass destruction.” Dick Cheney Speech to VFW National Convention, Aug. 26, 2002.[i]

“Right now, Iraq is expanding and improving facilities that were used for the production of biological weapons.” George W. Bush Speech to U.N. General Assembly, Sept. 12, 2002.[ii]

Yeah, Alterman is trying out his historical revisionism again, pretending that only Republicans thought that Saddam had WMD. Problem is, we have quotes saying the same from Bill Clinton, Hillary Clinton, John Kerry, Daschle, Teddy K, Waxman, Gore, etc. etc. etc.

Wonder why Alterman neglected to put those quotes in? No, just kidding. I know the answer. It rhymes with “shmintellectually pishonest artisan prick.”
