Daily Plame Flame Thread

Not much on the Plame front, but there is this:

There are basically two possible and quite divergent scenarios surrounding jailed New York Times reporter Judith Miller’s involvement in the Plame/CIA leak case. It is quite possible that she had no ulterior or activist role in the leak and she really is just protecting her source(s) and her journalistic champions justifiably are standing by her. But a counter view, which I have been suggesting since February, is strongly emerging now, with a surprising number of Timesmen and Timeswomen (off the record) believing it, or at least fearing it is true.

One would think that, as worries about Miller’s true role rise with every day she spends in jail, The Times would finally answer a few questions about what it knows and when it knew it. Yet, in his eye-opening internal review of July 28, the paper’s intelligence reporter in Washington, Doug Jehl, revealed: “Bill Keller, the executive editor of The New York Times declined to address written questions about whether Ms. Miller was assigned to report about Mr. Wilson’s trip, whether she tried to write a story about it, or whether she ever told editors or colleagues at the newspaper that she had obtained information about the role played by Ms. Wilson.”

Here we have a hint of the “split” at The Times. On one level is the top management — Publisher Arthur Sulzberger, Jr. and Bill Keller — who endorse Miller’s version that she was actually “reporting” on Plame in July 2003 and her view of herself as valiant defender of the First Amendment. A Times spokeswoman summed up the corporate bottom line last week: “Judy is an intrepid, principled, and Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist who has provided our readers with thorough and comprehensive reporting throughout her career.”

On another level, some of the paper’s elite reporters — not to mention some Times columnists — suggest in various pieces on the Plame affair that they are somewhat skeptical of her claim that she was contemplating writing a story on Plame in early summer 2003. The issue is critical because, if she was not actually talking to people about a story, what was she talking to them about?

Have at each other.

I’ve got all the respect in the world for Judy Miller. She’s one of the only reporters at the Times who had the guts to buck the librul conventional wisdom and write articles about the MAJOR THREAT that Saddam posed to us. And she’s stuck by her guns.

It’s a tribute the ferociousness of the librul assault on freedom that she is behind bars right now.

“The liberal assault on freedom”? I thought she was in jail because she refused to name a source in an investigation by a Republican, Fitzgerald…

Yeah, but your paean would be glossier if not for one little detail: She was wrong.

    Rove will be pardoned

Your idea of “nothing will come of it.”

The potential scenario will end, forever, the grotesque moralistic posturing by the Bush administration over the WOT and in particular the war on Iraq. In case you hadn’t noticed, public sentiment about the potatoheads’ conduct of the war, and their honesty during the run-up, are in a free fall. Only in your mind could any mention of Plamegate serve to do anything but accelerate that trend.

I do not think that word “PARDON” means what you think it does. Pardoned does not mean he is not found guilty or complicit in outing an undercover CIA Agent; no, rather, it means that the Bush junta will find a way to get him off the hook. On that point, Begala and I agree.

Aug. 15, 2005 issue – The departure this week of Deputy Attorney General James Comey, who has accepted the post of general counsel at Lockheed Martin, leaves a question mark in the probe into who leaked the identity of CIA operative Valerie Plame. Comey was the only official overseeing special counsel Patrick Fitzgerald’s leak investigation. With Attorney General Alberto Gonzales recused, department officials say they are still trying to resolve whom Fitzgerald will now report to. Associate Attorney General Robert McCallum is “likely” to be named as acting deputy A.G., a DOJ official who asked not to be identified because of the sensitivity of the matter tells NEWSWEEK. But McCallum may be seen as having his own conflicts: he is an old friend of President Bush’s and a member of his Skull and Bones class at Yale.

Saturday night massacre. It happened once, and back then people actually cared that their president was lying.

    +++

Regarding Judith Miller, if she hadn’t been assigned to cover a story, or if she never reported to her superiors that she was working on a story, how could one prove whether or not she was actually working on a story? And if that’s the case, how can a reporter every be called to testify about anything? What a shield!

BWAAAHAAAAAA! The evil plan is revealed at last.

Just plain sad. For so many on the right there is just no problem with the possibility that the prosecutor’s new boss may be an old friend of the President’s. Every thing that has gone wrong with the new GOP can be garnered by looking at Stormy’s posts in the last week or so. Zero consern about what is best for the country, total consern for what is best for the party and the President.

The fact the there is a precedent for the President getting rid of investigators that may harm the Republican party won’t matter one wit. What will matter is that the President, his administration and the party be saved at all costs.

A U.S. grand jury in Guam opened an investigation of controversial lobbyist Jack Abramoff more than two years ago, but President Bush removed the supervising federal prosecutor and the inquiry ended soon after.

No problem there, is there? Of course not. The Party is America and anything that may hurt the Party hurts America. It’s a pattern with Stormy and it’s a pattern with the rest of the new Republican party.

Pretty funny link. I see no rumblings of Fitzgerald being dumped, merely a change in bosses.
Member of Skull and Bones? So was John Effin Kerry. He was even in Bush’s class!!!! He must be part of the conspiracy.
Pardon me if I don’t trust Isikoff very much.
    I also liked this part:
The questions are pertinent because lawyers close to the case believe the probe is in its final stages.
So the investigation is almost over and Bush is going to appoint a ‘friend’ to quash it?
This ain’t Bill Clinton and Janet Reno with a compliant press.
Have at me for mentioning Clinton, Reno and a compliant press. I need a good laugh.

I see no rumblings of Fitzgerald being dumped, merely a change in bosses.

It’s possible that because the investigation is wrapping up it will be concluded, but this passage has me a little worried:

One question: how much authority Comey’s successor will have over Fitzgerald. When Comey appointed Fitzgerald in 2003, the deputy granted him extraordinary powers to act however he saw fit—but noted he still had the right to revoke Fitzgerald’s authority.

The person sent to replace Comey will most likely have the same authority, and the ability to shut down the case altogether, no matter how close it is to completion. Bush did it once with Abramoff, why wouldn’t he do it again? Do you really think he is going to leave his administration to chance with the possibility of charges of obstruction of justice and other charges hanging over them? Somehow I sincerely doubt it; but until it happens (if it happens) we won’t know. When the cat is out of the bag, you and I can discuss whether Bush took himself and his cronies out of the frying pan or not. Until then, I predict he will.

Regarding Isikoff and the Newsweek story about the Koran being used in inappropriate torture tactics… just because the White House stated the story isn’t true doesn’t mean the story isn’t true… it just means that Bush’s henchmen sufficiently choked the story of any attention.

One day you’ll figure it out, we’re living in an Orwellian world where a good economy means we’re paying over $2.40 for a gallon of gas, and unemployment rates include service jobs reshuffled into the “manufacturing” category. Stocks are up, but the common man’s ability to survive is down. The Haves are enjoying the ride, while the have-nots are wondering when bread is going to be too expensive to purchase.

You just keep right on deluding yourself, because you see, there’s this thing called REALITY, and one day it’s going to wake you up to the fact that you’re being fed lies and eating them up like chocolate cake. When you figure it out though, it will already be too late to have done anything about it, and you’ll either let out a loud cackle of insane laughter at the fact that the poor man has been eradicated, or you’ll feel such extreme guilt that you may decide to put a gun to your head. Either way, one day reality will show itself to you. Just because Bush says he can change reality with words, doesn’t mean it’s true. Wait and see.

What did Bush do with Abramoff and do you have a link?

    From my comment above.

A U.S. grand jury in Guam opened an investigation of controversial lobbyist Jack Abramoff more than two years ago, but President Bush removed the supervising federal prosecutor and the inquiry ended soon after.

    more

The transactions were the target of a grand jury subpoena issued Nov. 18, 2002, according to a copy obtained by The Times. The subpoena demanded that Anthony Sanchez, administrative director of the Guam Superior Court, release records involving the lobbying contract, including bills and payments.

A day later, the chief prosecutor, U.S. Atty. Frederick A. Black, who had launched the investigation, was demoted. A White House news release announced that Bush was replacing Black.

The timing caught some by surprise. Despite his officially temporary status, Black had held the acting U.S. attorney assignment for more than a decade.

Black also arranged for a security review in the aftermath of Sept. 11 that was seen as a potential threat to loose immigration rules favored by local business leaders. In fact, the study ordered by Black eventually cited substantial security risks in Guam and the Northern Marianas.

Abramoff, who then represented the Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands, alerted his clients in a memo about the expected report and warned: “It will require some major action from the Hill and a press attack to get this back in the bottle.”
