Remember the patient I ridiculed for filing a complaint against her Doctor for telling her she is obese? Turns out there is more to the story:
The state is investigating a doctor accused of telling a patient she was so obese she might only be attractive to black men and advising another to shoot herself following brain surgery.
âLetâs face it, if your husband were to die tomorrow, who would want you?â the state Board of Medicine says Dr. Terry Bennett told the overweight patient in June 2004.
âWell, men might want you, but not the types you want to want you. Might even be a black guy,â it quoted him as saying, based on the womanâs complaint.
Certainly paints a different picture.

Yes, I do remember.
I remember this as a launching pad for another screed about how unfair the left is to President Bush (see above). Instant “news” is frequently no news, so perhaps we all can back off the quick excuses for left/right headbutting and debate facts, not gossip.
james richardson
pardon me while i pick my jaw up from the floor.
Mr Furious
Guess what else you blew, John. The original story both you and Goldstein linked to never mentions her suing the doctor. She filed a complaint, that is all.
Don’t worry, you’ve both done your small part to contribute to the “frivolous lawsuits” meme. Nice work.
Oh, and the new follow-up story reveals that doctor to be a real piece of work. What a dick.
Brian
Allow me to offer kudos in actually correcting the story. At least you were honest enough to mention there’s more than what was reported before.
Krista
Kind of sad, though…there are probably many doctors out there who were trying to work up the nerve to tell their obese patients that they have to lose weight. And now they won’t dare, ’cause they’ll be scared of being sued, and a lot of obese people might not get the wake-up call (and subsequent support) that they need. But yeah, that doctor’s an ass.
Krista
Oh, and I bet you $20 on him that he’s got a gut on him like John Goodman too.
ape
WHAT!?
another ‘outrageous lawsuit’ story proves slightly wide of the truth?
amazing. do Republicans have a chip inserted in their head at birth which allows them to convert any information whatsoever to a tort horror story?
please file this comment under “Crazy Liberal Commenter Sues GOP ‘Because chip not inserted in his head’!”
you should add that i’m suing for $10000000000 or some other made-up number. and perhaps claim i’m on welfare.
GOP colleagues can quickly convert this to a successful suit, and point out that everyone’s insurance premiums have gone through the roof.
Mr.Ortiz
I was going to make a Sir Mix-a-Lot joke, but I’ll spare you all the horror, and myself the embarrasment.
Mr Furious
I too, commend you for offering the “more to the story” correction on the doctor being an asshole who deserved a complaint. But you still left the larger point uncorrected, you might mention that the doctor was never SUED.
ape
krista – re John Goodman. there’s a photo on the link. he’s pretty skinny by the looks of it.
Krista – I hadn’t read your comment before putting up my satire (above). I realise it now how redundant it was:
“Kind of sad, thoughâŠthere are probably many doctors out there who were trying to work up the nerve to tell their obese patients that they have to lose weightAnd now they wonât dare, âcause theyâll be scared of being sued..”
Why would they be scared of being sued? I suppose it doesn’t matter. Absolutely everyone is scared of being sued by anyone for anything, that’s the truth & now me & Rush are going out to play some golf, as long as the Liberals don’t steal the wheels off our golf cart & sue us when they don’t work as Flying Saucers.
the payout fund for that one has run dry.
Krista
Well, that blows my theory all to hell. It would have been much more entertaining if he had been a fat bastard. Instead, he’s just a bastard.
Alexandra
Thanks for this post. I saw this story on Fox News and the doctor was being interviewed, and he just seemed soooooooo innocent and put upon that I felt there had to be more to the story than what we were hearing.
John Cole
Actually Furious- I never said she sued in the initial piece. That was amental error in this post I have now corrected.
Thanks, as alway, though, for being Furious and giving me the benefit of the doubt!
Shygetz
John-
Thanks for the post. Like you, I was bemused when I saw the original story, but this puts a totally different spin on it.
joshua
I saw this guy on Olbermann’s show and he seemed like a normal doctor getting the shaft.
Bennett added that he is angry the board is reconsidering the 2001 complaint.
“That patient is currently in a nursing home completely demented, tied to a chair drooling on herself and doesnât recognize anybody,” said Bennett, 67. “She was in pretty nearly that condition at the time she filed that complaint.”
Recent developments aside, I commend his, uh, honesty, I guess. At least you’d know he wasn’t bullshitting you about your condition just to milk more money and visits out of you.
Krista
That makes no sense…if she was demented, tied to a chair, and drooling on herself, why would he even mention her weight to her? He would have mentioned it to her caregivers, and suggested some dietary modifications.
sean
2 different people, Krista. read it again
Krista
Guess I missed that.
Mr Furious
John, thanks for the correction. No harm no foul.
I thought it might just be an oversight on your part, not a deliberate attempt to mislead. I missed your original post at the time, it appears you got the story from ProteinWisdom, and THEY used the word “sued”. Fruedian slip on your and their part? Perhaps. but thanks for setting the record straight. Even an honest mistake on your part would further the urban legend status this case will undoubtedly earn.
BTW, I’m not always furious, I had a great time in the Frampton thread…
Mr Furious
Krista, that was Dr Asshole’s sensitive commentary about a different, brain-damaged, patient.
Krista
Ah yes, I see. You gotta love those physicians who do it only for the money, and have absolutely nothing but contempt for their patients.
Bruce from Missouri
And once again, John gets taken in hook, line, and sinker because he WANTED to believe it.

I think most of you people on here are not good judges of character. First, it was the sainted Michael Schiavo. It was the poor damsel in distress Jennifer Wilbanks. Then it was the sainted doctor, just trying to do his job and help his patients. You all fell for all of them. Not me. I saw through all of them from the start. All I had to do was see was one of their profiles on TV, and I knew what they were all about, even before I heard all the facts.
Shygetz
God bless the precognitive among us.

Hey, I’m perceptive, what can I say?
