Balloon Juice

Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

Technically true, but collectively nonsense

After roe, women are no longer free.

Let me eat cake. The rest of you could stand to lose some weight, frankly.

The GOP couldn’t organize an orgy in a whorehouse with a fist full of 50s.

Jesus, Mary, & Joseph how is that election even close?

Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

You can’t love your country only when you win.

My years-long effort to drive family and friends away has really paid off this year.

Impressively dumb. Congratulations.

No one could have predicted…

John Fetterman: Too Manly for Pennsylvania.  Paid for by the Oz for Senator campaign.

Pessimism assures that nothing of any importance will change.

Prediction: the GOP will rethink its strategy of boycotting future committees.

Let there be snark.

I like you, you’re my kind of trouble.

If senate republicans had any shame, they’d die of it.

Accountability, motherfuckers.

Teach a man to fish, and he’ll sit in a boat all day drinking beer.

Putin must be throwing ketchup at the walls.

Usually wrong but never in doubt

Fuck the extremist election deniers. What’s money for if not for keeping them out of office?

Republicans in disarray!

Black Jesus loves a paper trail.

“But what about the lurkers?”

The crisis in New Orleans has reminded me how much I like the Neville Brothers. I dusted off some neville Brothers cd’s, as well as some old Dr. John and Harry Connick.

My parents used to play ‘Yellow Moon’ all the time. I grew up listening to them….and grew into loving them.

“Everybody’s Cryin’ Mercy,” by Mose Allison

    I don’t believe the things i’m seein’
I’m wonderin’ ’bout some things i’ve heard
    Everybody’s crying mercy
When they don’t know the meaning of the word

    A bad enough situation
    Is sure enough getting worse
    Everybody’s crying justice
Just as soon as there’s business first

Toe to toe, touch and go
Give a cheer, get your own souvenir

    people running round in circles
Don’t know what they’re headed for
    Everybody’s crying peace on earth
Just as soon as we win this war

    Straight ahead, knock ’em dead
Pack your kit, choose your hypocrite

You don’t have to go to off-broadway
    To see something plain absurd
    Everybody’s crying mercy
When they don’t know the meaning of the word

Nobody knows the meaning of the word

My guess is that this song was written in the early sixties, maybe in the fifties. Fits in now.

You should play some Dirty Dozen Brass Band.

    John–

As a record collector, funk lover, and all around music dork, I cannot recommend the following New Orleans artists strongly enough:

    The Meters
    Eddie Bo
    Chuck Carbo
    Idris Muhammed
At the very least you should check out The Meters (includes Arthur Neville on guitar) first three albums (The Meters, Look-Ka-Py-Py, and Struttin’) and just about anything with Eddie Bo’s name on it (in particular the songs “Hook and Sling” and “The Thang”). Monstrous and amazing New Orleans funk and soul there.
