Well, this is a refreshing new change of pace. It’s nice to know that the military will accept gays in the military as a last resort. I imagine that would be the most humorous court battle of all time – a soldier attempting to use a law to get himself discharged with the military fighting automatic discharge tooth-and-nail. Office Space style what-do-I-have-to-do-to-get-fired mentality. The beautiful thing about these stupid policies is how easy they are to manipulate.

Hey, this is interesting… Maybe the military has found out that during a war they have to worry about things that actually matter?

This has always been the case. I’m pretty sure during Iraq version 1 several soldiers tried to get out by admitting to being gay. They were told they had to serve anyway. I also think that after the war was over they were dishonorably discharged and denied benefits because homsexuals were not allowed to serve in the military (I could be wrong about the second part, but it does seem like the kind of thing that happened, especially because that was before don’t ask don’t tell, it was just don’t be).

Yeah, like actually having enough troops there to be effective?

Good thing Hendrix pretended to be BEFORE the Vietnam War.

During the Vietnam “experience” when the draft was still in fashion it was “don’t ask, don’t tell, just don’t do it in front of the company commander.”

The morale of the troops is hurt if they don’t know they aren’t showering with some gay guys that want to have sex with them. This has serious implications for any peacetime standing army, but luckily for commanders short on troops, morale is not a significant factor in war fighting.

What? I’ve read this a couple times and still haven’t a clue what you mean.

Someone with a smattering of number theory under their belt might accuse you of hyperbole.

OF COURSE gays don’t get discharged in times of war… in peacetime, they only bring the Army down with their dang queer ways, but they sure do make good cannon fodder when the bullets start to fly!
The arguments against gays in the military are pathetic and stupid on any mental level above that of troglodytes. I’m betting that at least 90% of the loud obnoxious homophobes we see in the media are serious closet cases.

I suspect that at the initiation of deployment orders into combat, a certain (hopefully small) number of soldiers will panic and look for ways out of service. I wouldn’t be surprised if there are all sorts of ways to get out of the armed services that are restricted or denied as a matter of course during that time period. If they did that for ever exception *but* homosexuality, you’d have an explosion of “gay” soldiers taking the only way out left to them.

I think this is why it matters what exact language is used to describe conflicts. Is this conflict the ‘global struggle against violent extremism’ at which point we can kick out the gays, or is this conflict the ‘global WAR on terra’ at which point we CAN’T kick them out? I also remember hearing that there were hundreds of gays removed from service after they came out of the closet in the months after 9-11. Didn’t the GWOT start within a few days of 9-11, making these removals illegal? Or did congress never actually get to ‘declare war’ in that case. Maybe this is why the ‘war powers act’ matters!!

I’m pretty sure Fred Phelps sucks dick on a regular basis; I’d also bet dollars to doughnuts Sean Hannity is on the down-low.
