Balloon Juice

Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

Bark louder, little dog.

The party of Reagan has become the party of Putin.

We are aware of all internet traditions.

He really is that stupid.

I’d try pessimism, but it probably wouldn’t work.

JFC, are there no editors left at that goddamn rag?

The next time the wall street journal editorial board speaks the truth will be the first.

Everybody saw this coming.

Do not shrug your shoulders and accept the normalization of untruths.

Republicans do not pay their debts.

Consistently wrong since 2002

White supremacy is terrorism.

Make the republican party small enough to drown in a bathtub.

“woke” is the new caravan.

I see no possible difficulties whatsoever with this fool-proof plan.

My years-long effort to drive family and friends away has really paid off this year.

A sufficient plurality of insane, greedy people can tank any democratic system ever devised, apparently.

And we’re all out of bubblegum.

And now I have baud making fun of me. this day can’t get worse.

Republicans don’t want a speaker to lead them; they want a hostage.

Whatever happens next week, the fight doesn’t end.

Take hopelessness and turn it into resilience.

Within six months Twitter will be fully self-driving.

In my day, never was longer.

I will be off the grid most of the day watching the Mountaineers play East Carolina, so here is a ‘moment of zen’ for you:

Tunch taking his pre-game nap. Consider this an open sports thread.

*** Update ***

Mountaineers win in a game that was closer than it should have been. Next week we face summary execution certain defeat highly-ranked Virginia Tech.

Question: is he lying on a couch or the floor?

He is on the back of the couch. I live in an apt. that has not been renovated (only one in the complex, since I have not moved in 4 years), and it has hideous carpet on the wall. The cat, however, loves it (I should post some pictures of him climbing them chasing the lasr pointer), and because it has not been renovated the rent is 200 cheaper a month, which is money I send to TIAA-CREF.

I could move to a better apt., but I have been living cheap to build up my stock portfolio since I lost a number of earning years in grad school. Managed to save 1/4 of my income the past three years and invest it, and I will probably end up moving next year.

An open sports thread with cats as the lead? You have to be joking.

That is Tunch, named after Tunch Ilkin, former Steeler lineman and current announcer.

It better be shown on CBS in Phoenix. So far the channel guide says they’re carrying it. Luckily the local team is NFC so I don’t have to worry about CBS putting them on.

Did you know if you look at your cat, catch his eye, and do a slow blink a few times, sometimes he’ll do it back to you? It’s sort of the feline equivalent of a smile.

It’s fun to communicate their way sometimes, since they can’t do it our way.

That’s a good plan John, if you have the discipline to stick with it. I never regretted my time in grad school, and now five years later I can put away half my income and still live pretty well.

I just can’t express my feelings after hearing your cat’s name is Tunch. Awesome.

By the way, as an expat Steelers fan (Phoenix), how are the games now that Myron is gone?

I follow the Mountaineers because I might be one in grad school, so I’ve noticed talk about the Big East not deserving its BCS bid. What do you think? Kicking out Temple and inviting Louisville was a great move. Too bad they lost BC though. It would be sweet if WVU ran the tables and beat an ACC-champ VT team, but (warning: optimistic thinking ahead!)I worry how they would fare against USC if they won a spot in the title game.

On the Big East deserving a BCS bid – since the best teams in the conference are supposedly Louisville and Pittsburgh, I think the question is pretty well answered by noting that Pittsburgh lost to Ohio and Louisville lost to South Florida (Da Bulls… Ditka…).

Of course, if WVU pulls off the upset against VT, then a case can easily be made for the Big East.

That explains it! I thought there was something wrong with my perspective. LOL
