Balloon Juice

Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

You don’t get to peddle hatred on saturday and offer condolences on sunday.

“Can i answer the question? No you can not!”

Many life forms that would benefit from greater intelligence, sadly, do not have it.

75% of people clapping liked the show!

If you still can’t see these things even now, maybe politics isn’t your forte and you should stop writing about it.

A sufficient plurality of insane, greedy people can tank any democratic system ever devised, apparently.

Republicans don’t want a speaker to lead them; they want a hostage.

Let me eat cake. The rest of you could stand to lose some weight, frankly.

Is it negotiation when the other party actually wants to shoot the hostage?

It may be funny to you motherfucker, but it’s not funny to me.

Jesus, Mary, & Joseph how is that election even close?

Innocent people do not delay justice.

Usually wrong but never in doubt

Weird. Rome has an American Pope and America has a Russian President.

Putting aside our relentless self-interest because the moral imperative is crystal clear.

The poor and middle-class pay taxes, the rich pay accountants, the wealthy pay politicians.

The words do not have to be perfect.

Trump should be leading, not lying.

You are either for trump or for democracy. Pick one.

Today’s gop: why go just far enough when too far is right there?

Hot air and ill-informed banter

Their freedom requires your slavery.

I am pretty sure these ‘journalists’ were not always such a bootlicking sycophants.

Republicans want to make it harder to vote and easier for them to cheat.

I guess we won’t know for sure until we find out which Exodus ministry this woman is involved with. If it is the one “curing the queers” much of the far right will get in line. Because, you know, homos are the most serious crisis we face…

yep Harry Reid is on board:

The statement of Sen. Harry Reid (D-NV) as released to RAW STORY.

“I like Harriet Miers. As White House Counsel, she has worked with me in a courteous and professional manner. I am also impressed with the fact that she was a trailblazer for women as managing partner of a major Dallas law firm and as the first woman president of the Texas Bar Association.

“In my view, the Supreme Court would benefit from the addition of a justice who has real experience as a practicing lawyer. The current justices have all been chosen from the lower federal courts. A nominee with relevant non-judicial experience would bring a different and useful perspective to the Court.

This is actually a good pick politically. The moonbat religious base of the Republican party has been causing them some problems. Now is a good time to distance the President from them.

By picking someone both the left and right hate, he pretends to be a moderate.

Are you serious? The moonbat religious base is THE reason Bush even has the opportunity to make these nominations. Without them, 43 would have been another one-termer like 41.

Call it what you will, but this is anything but a “good pick politically.” Just take one fact – Miss Miers is still a “Miss” at age 60. She may not be gay, but the moonbat right isn’t going to wait for her to join the Log Cabin before they abandon Bush in droves.

By picking someone both the left and right hate, he pretends to be a moderate.

I think you may overestimate the amount of hatred on the left for this woman. Consider Reid’s comment above. I think most Senate Dems will be delighted to confirm Miers and consider themselves as having dodged a bullet.

My feelings exactly. This is more of the same from the administration that values loyalty to the president much more than petty little things like competence and qualifications.

She’ll be a regular me-too vote for Roberts, I suspect, much like Thomas has been for Scalia. Not inspiring, but better than the alternatives.

after the collective “huh?” this nomination brought, i thought of something that is definitely a liberal tinfoil hat theory, but good planning for Bush.

Suppose that indictments are handed out in the Plame case, and convictions result. Those convictions then get appealed up through the system to the Supreme Court. Who better to cast the “swing vote” than the counsel for the parties involved during the investigation.

or maybe he just like the black rings around her eyes.

oh, and i think Bush likes his nomination (and Laura who wanted him to choose a woman).

The real beef I have with this pick is that it is nothing more than cronyism. She is completely unqualified, just as Brownie was.

Is there any other time in American history when the president has nominateed his personal lawyer as a Supreme Court justice??

I think most Senate Dems will be delighted to confirm Miers and consider themselves as having dodged a bullet.

I totally agree. There is far worse that could have happened with this nomination. While I’m not completely happy with his pick, I personally believe it should go forward.

While Bush stands far less chance of being caught in any legal situations with two friends recently appointed to the bench, the choice he made today is splitting the GOP and that’s good enough for me. :)

I would have liked him to pick Janice Rogers Brown, but that wouldnt have happened. Besides, the left-wing would frame it as a “Bush is trying to hide the fact that he is a racist pick”. I tire of reasoning such as this:

By picking someone both the left and right hate, he pretends to be a moderate

I may sound a bit loony here, but could it be because he is a bit more “moderate” than people give him credit for? How cynical is that line of thought? Is that what you would do if you were in that position?

Roberts to my thinking was a great pick–and I say this as a Democrat. Roberts is incredibly bright and has all the right credentials, so it was very hard to argue against him without looking too political. When you realize the president has (correctly) wide latitude in making his appointments, you really can’t build up a head of steam against such a qualified nominee.

On the other hand, Miers doesn’t come to the table with many credentials for the Supreme Court, so it exposes her to more partisan bickering. (Yes she is a lawyer, but no experience as a judge, no experience in constitutional law per se, no academic experience.) It’s interesting that both sides are unhappy though. Could it lead to some weird coalition between the most conservative and most liberal senators banding together to see she does not get the nomination?

One final quick thought. Why is Hugh Hewitt happy? I would think he of all people would be pissed off. Perhaps he knows something we don’t?

Hugh (not that one, this one)

I don’t. I would even go so far as to say I’d rather have Janice Rogers Brown as the nominee rather than this. From her public record, she’s vastly underqualified to sit on the Bench, and I’ll be pounding signs into the parking lots of my Senator’s offices to register my displeasure.

Now excuse me. I need to go find my piledriver.

People are making a BIG mistake if they think she’s going to be bullied at the SCOTUS. A shrinking violet wouldn’t have risen through the world of good ol’ boy Texas lawyers when she did.

Oh sure, they helped get him elected. But what have they ever gotten from him? Not much more then platitudes.

No… Bush’s base is the mores and the have mores. Notice how nobody from the business community has objected to Miers.

Is it possible that Miers was chosen with the sole purpose of being defeated? That way, Bush can nominate whoever afterward and get a pass. I can hear cries from the right, “You can’t deny two Pres nominations in a row!!! It’s unprecedented!”

I wouldn’t put it pass Rove to pull something like that. Though if the Democrats got some indication that this is what the Repubs were trying to do, the Dems would support her. That would explain Reid’s comments today…
