Chuck Schumer does.

I’m sure there will be plenty of folks of a certain persuation who are all for confirming her now and impeaching her later.
Jim
Glenn links to the ACLJ (Jay Sekulow) who likes it.

I guess we won’t know for sure until we find out which Exodus ministry this woman is involved with. If it is the one “curing the queers” much of the far right will get in line. Because, you know, homos are the most serious crisis we face…

Harry Reid!

yep Harry Reid is on board:

Apparently Hugh Hewitt likes the choice.

Well, Progress for America sure got ready in a hurry..

This is actually a good pick politically. The moonbat religious base of the Republican party has been causing them some problems. Now is a good time to distance the President from them.
By picking someone both the left and right hate, he pretends to be a moderate.
Lee
The more the wing-nuts (left and right ones) freakout over this nomination, the more I like her.
Tractarian
Are you serious? The moonbat religious base is THE reason Bush even has the opportunity to make these nominations. Without them, 43 would have been another one-termer like 41.
Call it what you will, but this is anything but a “good pick politically.” Just take one fact – Miss Miers is still a “Miss” at age 60. She may not be gay, but the moonbat right isn’t going to wait for her to join the Log Cabin before they abandon Bush in droves.
I think you may overestimate the amount of hatred on the left for this woman. Consider Reid’s comment above. I think most Senate Dems will be delighted to confirm Miers and consider themselves as having dodged a bullet.
Geek, Esq.
Folks on the left are more disgusted by the blatant cronyism.
But, that beats Edith Jones or Janice Rogers Brown.
Geek, Esq.
Btw, Kos likes the pick.
*giggles*
Cynical Nation
I’m hoping I might like it better after five beers… or seven. I’ll let you know.
Off to the bar….
Otto Man
My feelings exactly. This is more of the same from the administration that values loyalty to the president much more than petty little things like competence and qualifications.
She’ll be a regular me-too vote for Roberts, I suspect, much like Thomas has been for Scalia. Not inspiring, but better than the alternatives.
guyermo
after the collective “huh?” this nomination brought, i thought of something that is definitely a liberal tinfoil hat theory, but good planning for Bush.
Suppose that indictments are handed out in the Plame case, and convictions result. Those convictions then get appealed up through the system to the Supreme Court. Who better to cast the “swing vote” than the counsel for the parties involved during the investigation.
or maybe he just like the black rings around her eyes.
oh, and i think Bush likes his nomination (and Laura who wanted him to choose a woman).
The Disenfranchised Voter
The real beef I have with this pick is that it is nothing more than cronyism. She is completely unqualified, just as Brownie was.
Is there any other time in American history when the president has nominateed his personal lawyer as a Supreme Court justice??
Andrew J. Lazarus
She will fill the math major seat left vacant by the retirement of Justice Blackmun.
Rome Again
I totally agree. There is far worse that could have happened with this nomination. While I’m not completely happy with his pick, I personally believe it should go forward.
While Bush stands far less chance of being caught in any legal situations with two friends recently appointed to the bench, the choice he made today is splitting the GOP and that’s good enough for me. :)
DougJ
The left loves her. I wonder if they’ll be smart enough to shut their mouths and go through the motions of opposing her to ward off the Dobsonite rear-guard action.
quackquack
I would have liked him to pick Janice Rogers Brown, but that wouldnt have happened. Besides, the left-wing would frame it as a “Bush is trying to hide the fact that he is a racist pick”. I tire of reasoning such as this:
I may sound a bit loony here, but could it be because he is a bit more “moderate” than people give him credit for? How cynical is that line of thought? Is that what you would do if you were in that position?

If you think Bush is moderate, than I have some nice ocean front property here in Indiana that you might be interested in.

Roberts to my thinking was a great pick–and I say this as a Democrat. Roberts is incredibly bright and has all the right credentials, so it was very hard to argue against him without looking too political. When you realize the president has (correctly) wide latitude in making his appointments, you really can’t build up a head of steam against such a qualified nominee.
On the other hand, Miers doesn’t come to the table with many credentials for the Supreme Court, so it exposes her to more partisan bickering. (Yes she is a lawyer, but no experience as a judge, no experience in constitutional law per se, no academic experience.) It’s interesting that both sides are unhappy though. Could it lead to some weird coalition between the most conservative and most liberal senators banding together to see she does not get the nomination?
One final quick thought. Why is Hugh Hewitt happy? I would think he of all people would be pissed off. Perhaps he knows something we don’t?
Hugh (not that one, this one)
Off Colfax
I don’t. I would even go so far as to say I’d rather have Janice Rogers Brown as the nominee rather than this. From her public record, she’s vastly underqualified to sit on the Bench, and I’ll be pounding signs into the parking lots of my Senator’s offices to register my displeasure.
Now excuse me. I need to go find my piledriver.
Geek, Esq.
People are making a BIG mistake if they think she’s going to be bullied at the SCOTUS. A shrinking violet wouldn’t have risen through the world of good ol’ boy Texas lawyers when she did.

Tractarian writes:
Oh sure, they helped get him elected. But what have they ever gotten from him? Not much more then platitudes.
No… Bush’s base is the mores and the have mores. Notice how nobody from the business community has objected to Miers.
Brad R.
See, I don’t like the nomination because it’s just more ridiculous cronyism. I’m so sick of Bush appointing people to positions for which they’re completely unqualified.
Brad R.
Apparently Hugh Hewitt likes the choice.
As Andrew Sullivan pointed out, Hugh truly is the Sid Blumenthal of the Bush administration.
srv
Yeah, Hewitt wants a WoT Justice. Just what we need. We’ll, at least Scalia and Stevens will have a few things to tell her about that.
So, she gets my vote. Just another lawyer for big-bizness, as long as she’s a social dandy.
simon
Is it possible that Miers was chosen with the sole purpose of being defeated? That way, Bush can nominate whoever afterward and get a pass. I can hear cries from the right, “You can’t deny two Pres nominations in a row!!! It’s unprecedented!”
Kimmitt
I like the pick because it’s really funny.
My Pet Goat
I’m just feeling sorry for Dobson’s and Santorum’s dogs tonight, what going to happen to them is decidely Unchristian.
The Disenfranchised Voter
I wouldn’t put it pass Rove to pull something like that. Though if the Democrats got some indication that this is what the Repubs were trying to do, the Dems would support her. That would explain Reid’s comments today…
DougJ
Do you really think Bush is such a jerk that he would send his own personal lawyer to be rejected by the Senate? I’m no Bush fan, but come on, *no way*.
Walt
Hey folks,read Beldar. http://beldar.blogs.com/beldarblog/
Maybe your blood pressure will go down.
The Disenfranchised Voter
I didn’t say Bush, I said Rove. Heh, Bush isn’t smart enough to think of a plan like that. Rove makes the political moves.
