Not looking good for Miers:
“You could say there is pretty much uniform disappointment with the nomination at the staff level,” another Republican on the committee staff said. “It is clear there is quite a bit of skepticism, and even some flashes of hostility.”
Another Republican aide close to the committee said, “I don’t know a staffer who approves of this nomination, anywhere. Most of it is outright hostility throughout the Judiciary Committee staff.”
In an interview on Tuesday, Mr. Specter emphasized that the senators would make their own decisions.
“I think those staffers, like anybody else, have a right to their opinions and to express them,” he said. “Senators will make independent judgments. You have some pretty strong staffers on the committee, but you have got some stronger senators.”
On a political level, this could be the worst SCOTUS nomination ever.

This morning I read in the paper that James Dobson told reporters he was assured that Miers would be a vote against abortion. President Bush said they have never discussed it. So one of three things must be true:
Bush is lying
Dobson is lying
Dobson gets more information than Bush

Wow, Spectre is really gaining my trust and respect. Who would have thought it was possible?
Look at the wording, he sounds like an adult! I thought those were extinct at his level.

“Bush is lying
Dobson is lying
Dobson gets more information than Bush”
Dobson was assured by Rove, not Bush.

Exactly. Bush says he has no idea how she would rule, he hasn’t talked to her about it. But Rove HAS talked to her about it? He knows she will vote anti-abortion? And he told Dobson, but didn’t bother to fill Bush in on her ‘judicial philosophy’?
Sorry, doesn’t add up to me.
And if that is correct…how sad.
Mr Furious
The whole fucking thing is sad…

Just on a political level?

Well, there was the Abe Fortas nomination. AFAIK (and I don’t pretend to be an expert) he had all the downside Miers has, plus ethical problems.

so after the tremendous amount of intellectual groundwork put into developing the federalist society, the strict constructionist constitutional theory, and selling the idea as a core value to the gop base, it turns out those ideas aren’t relevant (at least to this administration) for a supreme court judge. is that betrayal, not the cronynism or the possibility of another souter on the court, what is really driving the anger from the elites in the gop?
Krista
He has to be lying. There is no way that I’m going to believe that he would nominate her without first finding out where she stands on such a polarizing issue. If they’re such bloody good chums, then the topic must have come up at some point.

…from the worst POTUS ever.

When we find out what Rove really told Dobson, all those Democrats are going to have to apologize for making such a big deal of this. It could have just been stock tip or a wine recommendation.

Quit being an obstructionist, John.
