This sounds like either something French-Canadians would do or a Monty Python skit:
A Turkish court has fined 20 people for using the letters Q and W on placards at a Kurdish new year celebration, under a law that bans use of characters not in the Turkish alphabet, rights campaigners said.
The court in the southeastern city of Siirt fined each of the 20 people 100 new lira ($75.53) for holding up the placards, written in Kurdish, at the event last year. The letters Q and W do not exist in the Turkish alphabet.
Under pressure from the European Union, Turkey has improved language and human rights for its Kurdish minority, but the EU says implementation has been patchy and loopholes remain.
I guess they won’t be holding the World Scrabble Championship in Ankara.

Not necessarily French-Canadian…but some factions of the Quebec government? Yeah…I’d buy that.

As someone else pointed out, the French do it as well. Let’s say your company name that provides a product for an activity becomes synonymous with the activity itself. Such as Xerox. The French have a board which needs to approve the non-French word before it can be taught/inserted into a dictionary in France.

Sounds to me more like a New York City subway reg. Not so much intended to discourage behavior so much as a small revenue measure. Who knows, maybe all those 100-liras add up?

I’m sorry, I missed the part about the French fining people for using the wrong word.
There’s nothing wrong with having a committee decide on what new words will be used in language. It’s one of the reasons that Icelandic texts that are hundreds of years old read as if they were written last week (can’t say the same for English). But that doesn’t mean they’ve criminalized the use of unapproved words.

As for Turkey, we should probably just be grateful that no one is getting their tongue cut out.

Those people are wacqued. And qwazy.
Do they just leave the two keys in the upper left blank, or do they remove them entirely?
goonie bird
The goonie bird is smarter then the turkey any day

Silly Turks, why don’t they just torture the Kurds until they stop their anti-Turkey behavior?
Sorry, wrong thread.
Ross
They tried that with an ethnic minority before, then they tried marching them wholesale in the desert until they died, and then they tried spending the next 90 years denying it.

Shygetz
Yep, I know. Believe me, I am no fan of Turkey.
