The Steelers take on the Broncos today, and I am a basket case (and have been for about 24 hours. I feel like I am going to throw up or have aheart attack, and my body can’t decide which.
Go Steelers!
*** Update ***
24-3, Steelers, at halftime. Better than my wildest expectations.
We can’t quit or give up in the second half.
*** Update ***
24-10, Steelers, end of the third with the Steelers driving within the Broncos 30.
On my fifth glass of wine and still an absolute basket case. And these are not small glasses.
*** Update ***
The Steelers are going to the Super Bowl! I am so happy I am crying.
*** Update ***
OK. My Dick Vermeil moment is over. Man is it satisfying to finally win the big game. I was at the ’97 loss to the Broncos, and it is no nice to give one back to them.
An I concede the point– this was not very good live-blogging.

Here’s wishing for a crushing victory for the Steelers for two reasons.
1. They are my second favorite team and have been since the great Steeler/Oiler games of the late seventies.
2. The quicker the Broncos are knocked out, the quicker Kubiak can sign on as the Texans new head coach and hopefully turn the team around.

It’s just a game.
Which is easy for me to say. My team (the Niners) was out of the race by the second week.
But it is just a game. Life goes on either way, unless you do have a heart attack.
Geoduck
I’ll repeat Bob’s comment, even though “my” local team is still playing.
It’s just a football game. Chill.
rilkefan
Nausea and vomiting are possible warning signs of a heart attack.
Take care of yourself.

From a lifelong fan who saw Super Bowl championships and seasons with two wins …. take it from me, relax and enjoy whatever happens.
(SFO, 2-14 in 1979, 13-3 in 1981, NFL Champs).
Since we are Jake Plummer admirers around here (Arizona), I can’t offer up a “go Steelers” today. But may the best team win.

I’ve been waiting for this post.
Broncos – Seahawks in the Superbowl with Denver winning.
Naturally – I live in Colorado. The great thing about this game – for me – is that I really like both teams. But the advantage, did I mention this, I live in Colorado, is home field. Home field for the Broncos that is. Where as Pittsburgh has shown they don’t know how to take advantage of it (but they sure can take advantage of ‘visitors’), Denver is unbeaten in this situation.
Go Broncos

You have two choices:
You can suffer 20 heart attacks watching the game and going batsh-t loco crazy with every turnover and missed FG; or
You can sort the laundry and clean out that backlog of Playboy issues you got stashed in the closet. I mean, anything over 10 years old and you’re talking MILFs by now…hmm, but keep October 1988, that was good month… ;)
Sam Hutcheson
I’ll wait patiently to hear all of the Steelers “integrity of the game” fans to explain why that wasn’t a fumble…
ppGaz
The ground cannot cause a fumble. Pretty basic.
Sam Hutcheson
Uh, yes it can. If the player isn’t down, the ground can certainly cause a fumble. Runner’s knee wasn’t down.
ppGaz
No, the ground cannot cause a fumble. About as basic a rule interpretation as you can find in football.

“No matter how you run the option in the NFL, it doesn’t work.”
I know this is true (I’ve been hearing it forever), but why is it true?
Chris
Louise:
As a lifelong Oklahoma fan, the Option doesn’t work in the NFL because the defense is too fast. The Option, when run correctly, takes advantage of slow defensive ends and linebackers who forget their primary duty, which just doesn’t happen in the NFL.

Team speed.

Well this has been a whoopin’ through two quarters. And if I’m not mistaken, they get the ball back to start the 2nd half. There’s a lot of game left to play, but it looks like the Steelers could be on their way to Detroit…
Bearsfan
The Steelers have that look, no question. The look of a Superbowl winner.
Louise
Thanks, guys. Once you get to the NFL level, the fastest guys are the ones out there. It’s obvious, now that you point that out. :-)

A lone voice from a Chargers/Colts household … GO STEELERS!

Also Sam other parts of the body are equated with the knee. It just isn’t the knee that has to be down. Other parts can be down. Therefore the player was down because the rule allows for the forearm to count for downing the ball. The hand doesn’t, but the forearm does.
demimondian
Yup. It’s looking like the Steelers get to lose the Superbowl this year. Excellent.
Brad R.
Woof. Plummer looks positively Peytonesque.

Excellent! (33-17)

Ah, the bootleg. Nothin’ finer when it works.

Looks like they did.

This is history, folks :)

And darn if the Bronquistadores don’t come back with a QB sccramble…

Oh yeah. How sweet it is. And this one didn’t shorten my lifespan. Wow.

Is is legal to take out an insurance policy on a third party that you have no connection to? Cause I am thinking about taking out some term life on John here since any anxiety and/or heart problems he experienced in today’s pre-game will seem like child’s play when the super bowl is about to start. I just like to play the angles is all.

I (eeeeyeeeeeee) gotta feeeeelin’…..

Pittsburgh’s going to the Super Bowl!
What a game!

Ahh, the tears of drunken joy.

Your turn to the Dark Side is complete.

Well, the best team won. I’m crushed. It was one of those games that either team could have won but the Steelers got all the breaks… Good luck in the Superbowl.
Vlad
There is exactly one set of circumstances when the ground can cause a fumble: When a player falls down by himself, completely independent of contact with defensive players, and loses the ball. He wouldn’t be down if he hadn’t lost the ball, and thus it’s considered a fumble.
This happens approximately never.
Bob In Pacifica
Congrats to the Steelers. I never believed their passing game would have improved over the course of the last year. Remember, a year ago the Jets almost beat them.
I’m at the point in the post-season where I have to justify to myself why I take an interest in one team or another. I tend to root for Shanahan because he got fired by Al Davis and comes back and sticks it to him every year, but I was pulling for Bettis to finish his career in Detroit. Nice.
As for the final game, which I presume John Cole will be sleeping through, I don’t like Carolina, but even that is a stretch. I dislike them because when they first came into the NFL they were put into the NFL West and cut into the end of the Niners dynasty.
Okay, which Nat. Anthem was best? Carrie Underwood or the guy with the trumpet at Denver? I vote Underwood.

Just got off the phone with my cousin in Pittsburgh. Her Dad, my 90 year old wheelchair bound Uncle, stood up on his own for the first time in several years to cheer the Steeler win. Yes! I’m crying tears of joy with you John.
SeesThroughIt
What a fantastic game the Steelers played. And they didn’t give me serious health concerns this time!
ppGaz
Correct, the “down without contact” fumble. That’s because without contact with a defending player, contact with the ground is incidental to the play. Losing the ball then is no different from just dropping it on the ground while running. Fumble.
However, once touched by a defender, the player is “down” and the play is dead when knee or elbow touches the ground. The play is over, and that’s where the “ground cannot cause a fumble” bromide comes from. The ball comes loose but only after the play is over.
ppGaz
I think the term is “down by contact” which means, knee or elbow on the ground, after defender’s contact.
Down by contact is dead ball, and there cannot be a fumble caused by contacting the ground.

I’ll bet John is down to the Muscatel by now!

Iconic image of the game: just after halftime, a five-second shot of the Denver quarterback on oxygen. Despite an embarrassingly short time-of-possession.

Is it pass interference when it bounces off the defender’s helmet?

A Steeler fan drinking WINE during a game? I hope at least it was distilled from kielbasa and saurkraut.
The Bettis run that was called back was a beautiful play, and it hurt to see it overturned. And then Big Ben throws that incredible pass to give us the 3TD lead.
Typical Steeler football–get the lead, shorten the game. Reed’s FG in the 4th made it a 3 possession game and that was huge. And Big Ben’s bootleg was a fabulous call and perfectly executed.
Detroit, baby. Goin’ to Detroit.
Sam Hutcheson
I didn’t realize the elbow was considered equivalent to a knee. Assumed it was akin to the hand. Interesting.
Go Seahawks.
