Balloon Juice

Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

A thin legal pretext to veneer over their personal religious and political desires.

A snarling mass of vitriolic jackals

Make the republican party small enough to drown in a bathtub.

It’s all just conspiracy shit beamed down from the mothership.

Republicans are radicals, not conservatives.

The real work of an opposition party is to hold the people in power accountable.

Mediocre white men think RFK Jr’s pathetic midlife crisis is inspirational. The bar is set so low for them, it’s subterranean.

SCOTUS: It’s not “bribery” unless it comes from the Bribery region of France. Otherwise, it’s merely “sparkling malfeasance”.

No Kings: Americans standing in the way of bad history saying “Oh, Fuck No!”

That’s my take and I am available for criticism at this time.

Imperialist aggressors must be defeated, or the whole world loses.

Bad people in a position to do bad things will do bad things because they are bad people. End of story.

They want us to be overwhelmed and exhausted. Focus. Resist. Oppose.

An almost top 10,000 blog!

The desire to stay informed is directly at odds with the need to not be constantly enraged.

Conservatism: there are people the law protects but does not bind and others who the law binds but does not protect.

I did not have this on my fuck 2025 bingo card.

Let me file that under fuck it.

They traffic in fear. it is their only currency. if we are fearful, they are winning.

Washington Post Catch and Kill, not noticeably better than the Enquirer’s.

Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

I am pretty sure these ‘journalists’ were not always such a bootlicking sycophants.

I see no possible difficulties whatsoever with this fool-proof plan.

If ‘weird’ was the finish line, they ran through the tape and kept running.

How Boehner Won

The Cincinnati Post has an interesting piece on how John Boehner won that provides some background on the race, but the article spends too little attention on the impact of John Shadegg entering the race. I point the article out because it contained the following phrase:

Boehner, a perpetually tanned conservative, had spent much of the past year meeting secretly with Republicans who complained about the current leadership team, especially Blunt and his mentor, DeLay, and encouraged Boehner to launch a political comeback. More than a year ago, Blunt and Boehner discussed how they may soon be pitted against one another in face-off over DeLay’s successor.

I had always thought he looked a little tan.

“Anybody but Shadegg!!!” was the slogan around here. Most thought he’d be a good choice UNTIL he was seen giving a speech among the crazy right wing fundamentalist nutjobs protesting their “right to life” crap. This idiot was screaming how he’d get Roe V Wade overturned, blah, blah, blah.. Too scary for main stream republicans. I’m estatic that he lost!!!

    Hmm rachel,

Apparently you didn’t know that Rep. Boner is pretty far out in religious right land as well?

I’m pretty sure he won because people looked at his last name and thought they were voting for the guy from Growing Pains.

Is “tan” a codeword for gay?

I was listening to a report about Boehner on NPR. They only interviewed Republicans, and didn’t question GOP claims that he’d be a reformer.

Not a word about his passing out checks from tobacco companies on the floor of the House, or his other tireless efforts on behalf of tobacco companies, or his connections to K Street.

History by looseleaf binder: we just take out and discard the inconvenient past, rendering it retroactively nonexistant.

    “Back in the USSR,” indeed.

NPR is so liberal, I just don’t know why the federal government continues to fund them to the tune of tens of dollars a year. Their partisan politics cost republican’s the 2002, 2004 and the future 2006 elections.

    And thats just proof, CaseyL

I heard on tv last night that he is so tanned because he golfs all the time. They said that he and DeLay are the 2 best golfers in Congress. He belongs to a club near Washington which is “men only”.

He belongs to a 75,000$ a year men only club.

But to me the really hilarious feature of the whole situation is the overvotes–Congressional Republicans are so corrupt that they cheat in their own elections!

I don’t think Boehner is a reformer unless it is the sense of making the KStreet project less overt and more intelligently managed so that the corruption can continue, but without exposure.

So he makes what as a Congressman…$180,000? How the hell does he spend forty percent of his salary on a club membership?

I know, he’s a Republican and he was probably a millionaire before he ever took office, and I’m sure his wife makes six figures through some “connected” job, but come on.

Nobody from Ohio that spends enough time golfing that he can maintain a tan all year round should be serving in Congress. Golf costs money and somebody is paying for it. Besides, nothing good for the taxpayer was ever determined on a golf course. NO FUCKING GOLF should be the first item on any reform agenda.

    Here’s a question:

Does Boehner look more like actor David Garrison, the cuckolded neighbor from “Married, with Children” or, as TBogg insists, the flamboyantly gay comedian Taylor Negron?

    Discuss.

The “overvotes” came up because they forgot that the non-voting delegates (in this case, Guam – probably no DC or Puerto Rico delagates in the room) can vote in caucuses.

On a side note, and related because of the stellar record of the Republican party on gay rights.

Fred Phelps may find he has bitten off more than he can chew if he shows for this funeral.

Adding insult to injury, Westboro Baptist Church, led by anti-gay extremist Fred Phelps, is planning a protest at Coretta Scott King’s funeral at New Birth Missionary Baptist Church on Tuesday, February 7 at 12 noon.

Fred is going to get his ass handed to him.

For the record though I hear Fred’s actually a registered Democrat.
