Balloon Juice

Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

President Musk and Trump are both poorly raised, coddled 8 year old boys.

Not loving this new fraud based economy.

When I decide to be condescending, you won’t have to dream up a fantasy about it.

Let me file that under fuck it.

These days, even the boring Republicans are nuts.

People really shouldn’t expect the government to help after they watched the GOP drown it in a bathtub.

One lie, alone, tears the fabric of reality.

Is it negotiation when the other party actually wants to shoot the hostage?

You know it’s bad when the Project 2025 people have to create training videos on “How To Be Normal”.

No offense, but this thread hasn’t been about you for quite a while.

Everybody saw this coming.

Hey hey, RFK, how many kids did you kill today?

The worst democrat is better than the best republican.

Damn right I heard that as a threat.

Pessimism assures that nothing of any importance will change.

A thin legal pretext to veneer over their personal religious and political desires.

The republican ‘Pastor’ of the House is an odious authoritarian little creep.

Republicans don’t want a speaker to lead them; they want a hostage.

Putin must be throwing ketchup at the walls.

Republicans firmly believe having an abortion is a very personal, very private decision between a woman and J.D. Vance.

The desire to stay informed is directly at odds with the need to not be constantly enraged.

In my day, never was longer.

Lick the third rail, it tastes like chocolate!

Polls are now a reliable indicator of what corporate Republicans want us to think.

Superbowl Warmup

This is the hardest game to predict since the Steelers and Seahawks don’t play each other in the regular season. Think that you know how it’ll shake out? As before, any correct score that doesn’t involve Seattle winning wins the sixpack of your choice. Betting ends, of course, at kickoff.

BTW, I haven’t yet found a picture yet of Troy Polamalu singlehandedly blowing past three linemen to take down Mike Anderson short of the first down. If any of you know where to find one I’ll put it up just for the sheer insaneness of that play. [Update: even better – a moving gif of the play courtesy of reader Caleb. Get your fix before we kill ImageShack’s bandwidth]

Speaking of which, Polamalu is listed as ‘probable’ after hurting his ankle on Wednesday. If you’re the praying sort you know what to do.

    Seahawks by 4.

(No offense, John, I just think the’re the better team. Hard to see the Steelers winning with their quarterback going off on drinking binges all week. Portrays a certain cockiness reminiscent of USC before the Rose Bowl.)

My guess is that the Steelers will win 35-23. Or 35-27. How many guess do I get?

Your most recent guess counts as your official entry, so right now we have you at 35-27 Pittsburgh.

Um, pray he twists it again before the game? :D

Brian, is the Steeler’s QB really partyin’ down like the last day of frat spring break? My goodness; I may have to go back and read the sports pages. His coach must be, or should be, ready to lock him in his hotel room with a No Room Service order.

Not that I mind, of course. I’d be happy as a clam to tune in Sunday and see Polamalu with ice on his foot and the QB with ice on his head.

    CaseyL,

I had sent this to Cole, but not to Tim. But here’s the link I saw on Roethlisberger. It’s a good sports gossip site, and fun if nothing else.

Not only will the Seahawks win 27-20, but they will do it in a style that the calm, cool, and collected Mr Cole will find particularly irritating. Running the ball behind their two all pro linemen….to the left.

Cute pix, Brian; thanks for the link.

But I note he’s pouring booze down that girl’s throat, not his own.

    Ah. Final score? 37-24, Seahawks.

Polamalu is listed as OK, or should I say Puhlamahlu?

I’ll refrain from making a scoring prediction—I didn’t follow football enough this year to make a decent one. With Pittsburgh in the Superbowl, maybe I should stop following football more often.

We’ve had near-record rainy weather and the ground is saturated. High winds and stormy conditions are expected this weekend. My prediction is that part way through the game people in Pittsburg will hear a distant howl–the sound of millions of Puget Sound area fans screaming in frustration as powerlines fall and TV’s go blank.
There will be riots in the streets.

OK, I’ve lurked over an year and never felt so compelled to comment that I actually set finger to keyboard. But it’s the Seahawks. In the Superbowl. Pittsburgh is good, and one of the teams I root for, but the Hawks win 24 – 16. My scoring prediction is Steelers 1 passing TD, 3 Field Goals, Hawks, 2 rushing TD, 1 Passing TD, and 1 Field Goal.

Yes, the same zzyzx. Thanks :)

So it appears that we’re getting a huge windstorm up here in Seattle with 60 MPH winds. My power has already flickered a few times. I suspect my Superbowl might be spent driving around the streets of Seattle listening to KIRO.

On the other hand, the wind is sweeping the rain away finally. The rain started right as we were making our push for home field advantage and it’s rained nearly every single day until the day after the Superbowl. The rain is doing its job to give us luck, then it’s going to let us enjoy the parade in the sun.

Seriously, I’ve lived here 11 years and I’ve never seen a winter like this. It’s usually 10 days of rain and then 4-5 days of CLEAR blue sky, then another rainy period. It’s never 7 straight weeks of non-stop rain. Insanity.
