I will be watching the olympics tonight, but I also rented a bunch of movies since we are supposed to get hit with a snowstorm. First up is Hustle and Flow, which I hear is supposed to be fantastic. Later on, or probably tomorrow, is Thumbsucker.
Just watched Diary of a Mad Black Woman, which was mildly entertaining until the lead character turned into Kathy Bates in Misery. I do like Tyler Perry’s characters, though, who make me laugh.
At any rate, post your Olympics observations here, and if you are interested, my corporate masters have a new specialty blog called Gold Rush dedicated to Olympics coverage.
*** Update ***
Hustle and Flow- what a pleasant surprise. A little raw probably for some of the genteel crowd out there, but a thoroughly enjoyable movie. Definitely better than Crash.

I loved Hustle and Flow! As far as the winter Olympics..booooooring.

Maybe it’s just me, but Hustle and Flow looked extremely retarded.
MI
Yeah, it’s probably one of the worst marketed movies ever. Although in an odd why it actually probably helped with the hype in the sense that people went in thinking, “This movie looks extremely retarded” and then were like, “Whoa, that was so much better than I expected!” So maybe the poor marketing was actually clever.

You had me at the opening montage, NBC, you had me at the opening montage. {sniff}
I will be going to Italy ASAP. Wonderful scenery, and great ruins.

H&F replaced Serenity as the best movie from last year when I finally saw it.

When’s the ice skating begin already?

I got so tired of Costas and Williams banalities I’ve got the Doobie Bro’s “Captain n Me” playing. Yea they “with out love” in the ceremonies…
Steve
“she’s just gonna cry again!” Great Olympic moments.
Jeremy
I saw the torch lighting on CBC this afternoon and it is AWESOME!! So stay up even if they are trying to drive you away.
Pooh
Glad you liked the film, JC

So Bode’s the bad boy… even if he didnt wear the sanctioned beret, at least he has a sense of decorum that other US athletes seem to lack (I’d guess they were either snowboarders or short track skaters)
Or perhaps its a generational thing – stupid antics in front of a camera or the compulsion to be seen on TV talking on your phone has always struck me as immature at best…

NBC
For goodness sake, SHUT THE F__K UP…

If you live close to the Canadian border, you can watch the Olympics on CBC… much better than NBC.

I just think it’s wrong that Roots has designed the uniforms for Team USA but not for Team Canada.

I have only this to say about the spectacular opening ceremony:
There are a lot of reasons to believe that I am among the luckiest people who ever lived; living in the time of Pavarotti is one of them.
He’s lost some of the vocal stamina, but that voice is still a wonder of the world.
What a treat.

Dave, Roots was a company started by a couple of expatriate Americans anyway. You may or may not prefer their style, but I don’t think it’s inherently wrong that they’ve switched teams.
The Bay (North America’s oldest corporation and a venerable Canadian institution) designed the uniforms this year. The hats are dorky cool, but I don’t think they’ll be as hugely popular as the Roots caps from years back.

Dude, John? You’re like the most genteel person here.
The Disenfranchised Voter
Hmm, maybe I’ll have to give Hustle and Flow a shot. It seems that everyone who saw it, liked it.

I saw Hustle and Flow a few weeks ago, and it may be the best movie I saw from last year in what I thought was a pretty strong year for movies. I’m currently pulling for Terrence Howard for Best Actor, though I haven’t seen Capote and I’m a big Philip Seymour Hoffman fan. What I’m really looking forward to is a performance of ‘Hard Out Here for a Pimp’ at the Oscars. Not every year you get to hear someone talk about ‘a whole lotta bitches jumpin’ ship’ at this event.
Screwy Hoolie
Better than Crash? Hardly.
But “it’s hard out here for a pimp” to be sure.
Krista
I agree. The Roots stuff was cool.

We all can be grateful that Katie Couric was not in the booth this year for the Opening Ceremonies. Still, shut up commentators of banality. Ice skating pairs tonight.
Pavarotti singing Puccini? Truly sublime.
ppGaz
It was the perfect finish.
Stormy70
I have watched it about 10 times, and it still gets to me. True artistry.
