Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

Democrats have delivered the Square Deal, the New Deal, the Fair Deal, and now… the Big Joe Biden Deal.

T R E 4 5 O N

Jack be nimble, jack be quick, hurry up and indict this prick.

Republican obstruction dressed up as bipartisanship. Again.

If senate republicans had any shame, they’d die of it.

You’re just a puppy masquerading as an old coot.

This isn’t Democrats spending madly. This is government catching up.

The willow is too close to the house.

Marge, god is saying you’re stupid.

They fucked up the fucking up of the fuckup!

When you’re in more danger from the IDF than from Russian shelling, that’s really bad.

FFS people, this was a good thing. take the win.

The current Supreme Court is a rogue court. Very dangerous.

The new republican ‘Pastor’ of the House is an odious authoritarian little creep.

The republican caucus is covering themselves with something, and it’s not glory.

… pundit janitors mopping up after the gop

I have other things to bitch about but those will have to wait.

At some point, the ability to learn is a factor of character, not IQ.

JFC, are there no editors left at that goddamn rag?

Today’s gop: why go just far enough when too far is right there?

There is no right way to do the wrong thing.

Do not shrug your shoulders and accept the normalization of untruths.

He seems like a smart guy, but JFC, what a dick!

Imperialist aggressors must be defeated, or the whole world loses.

Katrina Report

by John Cole|  February 13, 20061:35 pm| 56 Comments

This post is in: Media

The House is set to release a blistering report about the response to Hurricane Katrina, and I just wanted to share with you an example of the kind of thing that makes many Republicans think the media is aligned against them. Check out this from the NY Times:

Republicans’ Report on Katrina Assails Administration Response By ERIC LIPTON

WASHINGTON, Feb. 12 — House Republicans plan to issue a blistering report on Wednesday that says the Bush administration delayed the evacuation of thousands of New Orleans residents by failing to act quickly on early reports that the levees had broken during Hurricane Katrina.

That delay was significant, the report says, rejecting the defense given by the White House and the Department of Homeland Security that the time it took to recognize the breach did not significantly affect the response.

“If the levees breached and flooded a large portion of the city, then the flooded city would have to be completely evacuated,” the draft report says. “Any delay in confirming the breaches would result in a delay in the post-landfall evacuation of the city.” It adds that the White House itself discounted damage reports that later proved true.

The report, by the select House committee examining the government’s response to Hurricane Katrina, is the first of three major investigations into the subject; the others, for which reports are expected within one or two months, are being conducted by a Senate committee and by the White House.

The House report blames all levels of government, from the White House to Gov. Kathleen Babineaux Blanco of Louisiana to Mayor C. Ray Nagin of New Orleans, for the delayed response to the storm.

We don’t have the whole report, but the author of this story and the editors who wrote the headline chose to focus solely on the administration, rather than acknowledging that the report blamed all levels of government. The title could just as easily have been “Republicans’ Report on Katrina Assails Mayor Nagin’s Response.” But it wasn’t, was it?

And before the flaming starts from the usual suspects, I really don’t care- I think this is par for the course for the media- sensational headlines. It is sexy to have a headline that says even the Republicans are blaming the Bush administration, and that was the hook. Much sexier than “All Levels of Government Responded Poorly to Katrina,” which is something we all already know. So I understand why it is happening, but I am trying to explain to you why certain people look at the media and think they are out to get them.

Dumbest Cover-up Ever

by John Cole|  February 13, 20061:10 pm| 69 Comments

This post is in: Republican Stupidity

It is too early to officially claim this is a cover-up, but it sure stinks of it, and the press is hot on the scent:

The more than 18-hour delay in news emerging that the Vice President of the United States had shot a man, sending him to an intensive care unit with his wounds, grew even more curious late Sunday. E&P has learned that the official confirmation of the shooting came about only after a local reporter in Corpus Christi, Texas, received a tip from the owner of the property where the shooting occurred and called Vice President Cheney’s office for confirmation.

The confirmation was made but it is not known for certain that Cheney’s office, the White House, or anyone else intended to announce the shooting if the reporter, Jaime Powell of the Corpus Christi Caller-Times, had not received word from the ranch owner.

Why not report an accidental shooting, as no one on the planet thinks the Veep was busting a cap in an 80 year old blue blood out of anger. This is simply emblematic of this administration- the desire for secrecy and loyalty always trumps doing the right thing and good, plain common sense.

Inane, Wrong And Better Organized Than You

by Tim F|  February 12, 20066:22 pm| 81 Comments

This post is in: General Stupidity

In studying the creationist movement about ten years ago I learned about one of the more irritating tactics, in which they’d train elementary students to pepper science teachers with inane questions like, ‘were you there!?‘ and not sit down until the teacher capitulated or changed the subject. Our class even had the opportunity to spend a long afternoon debating with a hotheaded representative from Eagle Ministries in Co. Springs, a group whose mission is to brainwash college-bound parochial school kids in order to prevent ‘modern ideas’ like evolution and women’s lib from getting through.

An Australian named Ken Ham has apparently decided to take that strategy and bump it up a notch:

WAYNE, N.J. — Evangelist Ken Ham smiled at the 2,300 elementary students packed into pews, their faces rapt. With dinosaur puppets and silly cartoons, he was training them to reject much of geology, paleontology and evolutionary biology as a sinister tangle of lies.

“Boys and girls,” Ham said. If a teacher so much as mentions evolution, or the Big Bang, or an era when dinosaurs ruled the Earth, “you put your hand up and you say, ‘Excuse me, were you there?’ Can you remember that?”

“Sometimes people will answer, ‘No, but you weren’t there either,’ ” Ham told them. “Then you say, ‘No, I wasn’t, but I know someone who was, and I have his book about the history of the world.’ ” He waved his Bible in the air.

For any teachers reading this, the easy answer to that question is to ask what the kid would do if somebody killed a family member. Would he or she just give up? After all, they weren’t there. Use forensic science as a teaching tool for the scientific method in general.

From the same article, some hope:

Hundreds of pastors will preach a different message Sunday, in honor of Charles Darwin’s 197th birthday. In a national campaign, they will tell congregations that it’s possible to be a Christian and accept evolution.

Ham considers that treason. When pastors dismiss the creation account as a fable, he says, they give their flock license to disregard the Bible’s moral teachings as well. He shows his audiences a graphic that places the theory of evolution at the root of all social ills: abortion, divorce, racism, gay marriage, store clerks who say “Happy Holidays” instead of “Merry Christmas.”

Damn straight it’s treason. Kids will have a hard time holding the line if equally-faithful friends don’t see science as a threat. Good news, then, that the latest Pope has unequivocally come out in favor of modern science, although to many evangelists Catholicism is one small step removed from paganism. Ham, of course, took the same line as religious fundametalists the world over. Anything less doctrinaire than his medieval viewpoint might as well be worshipping an ovoid streambed pebble.

Ham’s obviously a tool, but he represents a powerful constituency:

Bills that would allow or require science teachers to mention alternatives to evolution have been introduced in Michigan, Mississippi, Missouri, Oklahoma and Utah. State boards of education in Kansas and Ohio adopted guidelines that single out evolution for critique. The governor of Kentucky used his State of the Commonwealth address to encourage public schools to teach alternative theories of man’s origins.

A national conference for science teachers in the spring will focus on helping them respond to creationists’ challenges. In an informal survey, the National Science Teachers Assn. found that nearly a third of its members felt pressured to play down evolution.

Ham’s dream is to increase that pressure.

Speaking of organized, don’t miss this account of how the religious right took on the religious left and won.

Dead Eye Dick

From the “Oops!” Department:

Vice President Dick Cheney accidentally shot and injured a man during a weekend quail hunting trip in Texas, his spokeswoman said Sunday.

And the man he shot was not named Scooter Libby, which would have been no surprise.

Straight shooters, the whole damned administration.

Thin Gruel, Cont’d

The AP has now run two pieces alleging connections between Abramoff’s firm Greenberg Traurig and Harry Reid. The Big! Shocking! News! appears to be that Democrats also carry their share of the Abramoff taint.

Except, nowhere in either article do you find evidence that the lobbying conducted by Abramoff’s firm resulted in anything illegal or even unethical taking place. Reid was lobbied to oppose a bill which he not only ended up supporting but actually co-authored. As hard as it may be to believe, this appears to be one of those cases in which a lobbying firm engaged in conduct which was not in fact illegal. Readers are welcome to point out the allegedly illegal activity in the comments.

It appears that this whole story amounts to a 5th-grade game of cooties where any contact with the ‘it’ person makes you radioactive unless you uncap the invisible cootie spray, spin around three times and say the secret word. Rightwingers who want to maintain their credibility will want to reserve judgment until somebody actually alleges that something unethical took place.

On the other hand, folks keeping track of actual Abramoff-related crime will be pleased to welcome three more GOP congresspersons to the club: Reps. Capito (R-WV), LaTourette (R-OH) and Young (R-AK). Rep. Young seems to have been a particularly naughty boy.

I Need More Than This

This post is in: Politics, General Stupidity

I am going to start this post by stating that I think President Bush is understating his relationship with Jack Abramoff. I do not think they are bosom buddies, but I do think he knows who is he is and could pick him out of a lineup. In other words, their relationship is somewhere in between “I just shook his hand at an event” and the kind of relationship that takes the Daily Kos and Nation readers to their collective special places, with dreams of sugar plums and impeachment. But if this is the best photographic evidence that can be found, color me underwhelmed:

Now I know that this has been a sort of the Rapture (v. 2.0, secular edition) for Think Progress and others, but if this is the best they can come up with, I am not impressed. Next time you are at an office party, look around the room and see who is taking pictures. If one of those folks in the room turns out to be a criminal later, that picture could be used against you.

*** Update ***

Let’s put it this way, since the dim bulbs are out in force and can not seem to grasp my point. Another visual aid might help.

Photo removed for copyright reasons. The photographer, Leif Skoogfors, notified me in October 2011 that it was a copyright infringement.

See! John Kerry and Jane FONDA ARE BEST FRIENDS AND PLOTTING TO LOSE THE VIETNAM WAR! How do I know? BECAUSE THEY ARE IN THE SAME PICTURE!

*** Update ***

I swear to God I did not read Red State today until just now (17:40). That is just creepy that Dales and I had the same exact thought.
