Balloon Juice

Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

This year has been the longest three days of putin’s life.

Red lights blinking on democracy’s dashboard

Jack be nimble, jack be quick, hurry up and indict this prick.

We know you aren’t a Democrat but since you seem confused let me help you.

Let’s bury these fuckers at the polls 2 years from now.

The rest of the comments were smacking Boebert like she was a piñata.

Wow, you are pre-disappointed. How surprising.

Anyone who bans teaching American history has no right to shape America’s future.

I swear, each month of 2025 will have its own history degree.

People are weird.

Every decision we make has lots of baggage with it, known or unknown.

Their boy Ron is an empty plastic cup that will never know pudding.

Republicans: “Abortion is murder but you can take a bus to get one.” Easy peasy.

America is going up in flames. The NYTimes fawns over MAGA celebrities. No longer a real newspaper.

And now I have baud making fun of me. this day can’t get worse.

Anne Laurie is a fucking hero in so many ways. ~ Betty Cracker

Whoever he was, that guy was nuts.

This has so much WTF written all over it that it is hard to comprehend.

Give the craziest people you know everything they want and hope they don’t ask for more? Great plan.

“Everybody’s entitled to be an idiot.”

We cannot abandon the truth and remain a free nation.

When someone says they “love freedom”, rest assured they don’t mean yours.

One lie, alone, tears the fabric of reality.

The fundamental promise of conservatism all over the world is a return to an idealized past that never existed.

Harry Reid issues a statement.

Meanwhile Reid haters remain unable to piont out a single thing that Reid actually did wrong. In related news, water is wet.

It’s not right that Democrats make money! They should be dirt poor.

Damn, after Karl’s promise to take off the gloves and come out flinging shit barehanded, I was looking forward to some action. This thing with Reid is it? Fully disclosing property he owns, but his assault on the republic took place by not labeling it correctly?

Karl, you’re not just looking a little limp, you’re embarrassingly dribbling blanks down your pants. But never disappointing, the base summons their outrage for the fight. Gotta thank Karl and his pods for the laughs. They just keep on coming.

It’s time to restore honor and dignity to government.

Maybe he should consider daily sessions with Ms. Cleo?

Renowned conservative thinker Captain Ed has an op-ed in the New York Post about the Reid land deal.

This is his best chance to make a good case that Reid did something bad. So what does he do? The first two paragraphs briefly summarize the nature of the issue – at which point he says “this isn’t the first time questions have been raised about Harry Reid,” and spends the rest of the op-ed rehashing a bunch of old stuff!

If there’s any substance at all to the newest “scandal,” conservatives sure are doing their best to make sure it never comes to light.

I think they know there isn’t much substance there.

What they’re doing now is sowing Fear, Uncertainty and Doubt.

They’re all out of ideas, the only thing they have left to hold onto power is FUD.

Sherard, if Reid is guilty of ANY damn thing, let’s hear about it, for fuck’s sake… seriously, if you guys can’t do any better than “well, he’s corrupt, and everyone knows it,” you should just fold up your indignation and go home.

Hell, I saw a right-wing generated list of Demo “scandals” recently, designed to enable the base to fondle their moral outrage into a reasonably firm stiffy…

    Scandal #1: Jefferson.
    Scandal #2: McGreevey.

Scandal #3: Harry Reid’s boxing tickets.

I stopped reading after that… laughing too hard.

Meanwhile Captain Call Center has conveniently ignored Hastert’s real estate shenanigans. Let’s recap:

Dennis Hastert used an Illinois trust to invest in real estate, secured $207 million in earmarked appropriations for a a highway project near that real estate, made no mention of the trust on his financial disclosures, did not take the extra steps called for in the House Ethics Manual and volunteer that he held land in a secret land trust, and then turned about a $1.8 million profit in less than two years.

What’s the saying, those in glass ships…

Hey, Hewitt! I really love the fact that Harry Reid is guilty of not misfiling his taxes. That’s a great catch, you know — that he filed his property taxes in spite of no longer owning the land he was going to make a suspicious profit on.

That’s real thinking for you. Harry Reid, master criminal — hid hyis ownership in a plot of land so that he could pay taxes on it, and pay taxes when it was sold, and pay all sorts of other useful levees. A less smart crook would have tried to make a profit off of his deception, but Reid…no, not him. He didn’t try to make any money, didn’t try to evade any taxes, didn’t even try to pretend to not owning the land in question. Wow!

Gosh, Hewitt, and do you know, that criminal mastermind Reid — he released that fact himself this morning! Wow! What a crook! Gets an opinion from the Senate Ethics committee that he can spend the money in question, and still writes a check to his own campaign committee, just so that the Republican dead-enders can make an issue of the redirection.

What a criminal mastermind, eh? You’ve got to admire the man’s tenacity in his criminal enterprises, don’t you?

Indeed. If we can’t take down a politico based on his Christmas bonuses to the service staff (heck, they’re probably illegals), then I don’t see how we can fairly accuse a politician of earmarking federal highway funds to boost the value of his otherwise remote property.

    Peas in the pod, really.

What ? Harry Reid ? He said there’s nothing there.

    Who cares what he said?

I distrust statements. I’d rather follow the records. I can’t find where Harry Reid did anything other than pay taxes on this property, so from the IRS’ viewpoint, he had ownership. Doesn’t seem like he tried to hide his ownership, he filed the disclosure forms. Oh, here’s a problem — he failed to change the disclosure to represent it now being owned by a LLC he owned.

Look up “flow through taxation”. All profits, losses and expenses flow through to the respective members as if they were personal holdings. This is the major advantage of a LLC — you don’t get corporate and individual taxation. Yet he paid said taxes, how curious for someone you think has something to hide.

Explain to me what scandal there is in a mistake of this nature, please.

    October 17, 2006 at 11:25 am

Here is the scandal (not Reid, but the AP):

Here’s what one former colleague of Solomon’s said last week: “I worked [X] years in the same office as Solomon, sometimes with him. The consensus: he’s lazy, and takes hit jobs handed him on a platter by opps research teams (and anyone will do.) And doesn’t do much to clean it up. I also know one of his fave and frequent sources is Barbara Comstock, former DOJ spxwoman and GOP attack dog.”

The fact that this slob is making a living as a journalist is the real scandal.

Uh Doug, the Clintons lost money on Whitewater. $15K or something which must have been quite a hit for a young couple just starting out. Hillary was probably making a pretty decent salary as a lawyer, but Bill was a law professor with political aspirations at the time and probably wasn’t really making that much. Heck, I’d be sick if I lost that kind of money today.

Despite what Republicans claim, it really isn’t illegal for Democrats to invest money. The Clintons were absolved of all wrong-doing in Whitewater by the Pillsbury Commission, the first special prosecutor, the second special prosecutor (hint: last name rhymes with “Starr”), and the third special prosecutor. They also hired a forensic accountant on their own nickel to make sure they had done nothing wrong.

Sorry to late post, but I had to set the record straight.
    HH said:

Federal election law bars candidates from converting political donations for personal use.” – AP

I believe he explained that his political activities resulted in extra work for the staff, so he compensated them from his campaign. he also said he reconsidered and would recompense the campaign fund with his own personal money.
