Balloon Juice

Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

Why is it so hard for them to condemn hate?

Fuck these fucking interesting times.

They traffic in fear. it is their only currency. if we are fearful, they are winning.

They fucked up the fucking up of the fuckup!

Whatever happens next week, the fight doesn’t end.

rich, arrogant assholes who equate luck with genius

They’re not red states to be hated; they are voter suppression states to be fixed.

This blog will pay for itself.

But frankly mr. cole, I’ll be happier when you get back to telling us to go fuck ourselves.

Damn right I heard that as a threat.

Optimism opens the door to great things.

I’ve spoken to my cat about this, but it doesn’t seem to do any good.

Nothing worth doing is easy.

Speaking of republicans, is there a way for a political party to declare intellectual bankruptcy?

Republicans don’t want a speaker to lead them; they want a hostage.

Come on, media. you have one job. start doing it.

I like you, you’re my kind of trouble.

And now I have baud making fun of me. this day can’t get worse.

Historically it was a little unusual for the president to be an incoherent babbling moron.

This fight is for everything.

An almost top 10,000 blog!

Putting aside our relentless self-interest because the moral imperative is crystal clear.

Reality always lies in wait for … Democrats.

Let’s delete this post and never speak of this again.

Just saw the Wreckers on Imus.

Those ladies can sing, and they are mighty easy on the eyes.

Consider this an open thread.

    They were decidedly apolitical.

Michelle Branch has a sweet voice. Check out her track on Santana’s ‘Shaman’ CD.

Sorry, but they have no appeal to me visually. They are talented singers, but not my cuppa tea on looks.

My grandfather said, “If everyone liked the same qualities in a woman, hundreds of men would be crushed trying to get to one woman.”

Men as sperm cells and a woman as an ovum; I like the imagery.

I’ve never heard of the other one, but I do enjoy Michelle Branch’s music — she’s really pretty talented.

“If everyone liked the same qualities in a woman, hundreds of men would be crushed trying to get to one woman.”

Heh. At any rate, it would be fun to watch. “Form an orderly queue to the left, gentlemen…”

    Conservatives in denial

Holding conservatism blameless for last week’s Republican debacle may stiffen conservative spines, but the very idea is the product of mushy conservative brains unwilling to acknowledge the obvious: that conservatism has never been more ascendant than during George Bush’s presidency; that the Republican Party over the past six years moved well to the right of the American people on social, economic and foreign policy; and that on Nov. 7 the American people chose a more pragmatic course.

After all, it wasn’t just the president’s war that was driven by right-wing ideologues. Particularly in the past two years, Republican economics, too, was shaped by ideology. The president’s proposal to privatize Social Security was the brainchild of right-wing think tanks and the financial institutions that yearned to sell all those annuities. It never penciled out, and all sober analysis concluded that its chief effect would be to imperil retirement security itself. By nonetheless making it the signature domestic issue of his second term, George Bush again stamped himself a true believer and as indifferent in economic policy as he was in foreign policy to such vulgar trivialities as facts.

    Republicans moderates switching parties

In the state Senate, tied 25-25 between Democrats and Republicans after last week’s elections, Republican Sen. Sam Kitzenberg of Glasgow said Monday he plans to switch parties, giving Democrats a 26-24 majority.

“I’m a moderate, and there is no room left in the Republican Party for moderates,” Kitzenberg said. “I’m not leaving the Republican Party; it has basically left me.”

I’m sure this just warms the cockles of John Cole’s heart.

And on that note, Chris Shays is now the sole Republican congressman in the Northeast. He’ll be out in 2008, and when Snowe & Collins retire they’ll be replaced by Democrats. And the NY GOP is in shambles.

On a funnier note, Ted Haggard claims he was molested by Republican Congressman

Bipartisanshipfulness is alive and well after the election.

Kenneth Y. Tomlinson was nominated again as chairman of the Broadcasting Board of Governors and for a term on the board expiring Aug. 13, 2007. The board oversees Voice of America, Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty, Radio Free Asia, Radio and TV Marti, broadcasting initiatives in the Middle East and other nonmilitary U.S. broadcasting overseas.

Same Ken Tomlinson that has been caught violating the laws concerning public broadcasting twice.

According to Wikipedia, Michelle Branch shut down the forums on her website because she didn’t want to pay to give people a place to bash her. I’m not entirely sure whether that annoys me, or I like it.

I did enjoy one of their music videos, but what I wonder is, is Branch going to give up her solo career for a while to be part of the Wreckers?

Michelle Branch. Huh. Every time I read her name, I remember seeing her on that episode of Buffy the Vampire Slayer where Willow accidentally made everyone forget who they were, and then Tara left her after they all got their memories back.
