Cowher Resigns

I don’t know what this means for the future of the Steelers:

Bill Cowher resigned as the Pittsburgh Steelers’ coach Friday, stepping aside to spend more time with his family one year after winning the Super Bowl title he had chased since 1992.

The 49-year-old Cowher left with one year left on his contract following an 8-8 season that was a disappointment, especially after last season: The Steelers became the first team to win three playoff games on the road and then the Super Bowl as a sixth-seeded AFC team.

“History will look back on Bill Cowher as one of the great coaches of all time,” Steelers chairman Dan Rooney said.

The Steelers will begin a coaching search immediately to replace the departing Cowher, who called Rooney on Thursday to inform him of his decision.

I liked the guy, and he will be missed.

First Rumsfeld, then Miers, now this!

:-p I’m not really trying to draw an association here. Those were just the only two people who were recently retiring that came to mind.

This guy will work the TV circuit for a year or two, then step up to a monster mega-moollah contract and coach Dallas (or some other Pitty slap-in-the-face team) when Parcells departs.

As much as I despise Worthlessberger, I agree that Cowher at least made him serviceable enough to win the SB. He’ll be a sorely missed coach.

OK, contest time! Who’ll be the replacement?

    I’ll start–Bo Pellini

What’s the name of the Lousiville coach? Are there decent coordinators already in place in Pittsburgh that won’t commit the unpardonable offense of asking the Rooneys for money?

I also didn’t realize how young Cowher was when he took over, that’s almost Grudenesque.

In other more political news the letter Pelosi and Reid sent to El Shrubo seems to leave the impression the Donkey has grown a pair TPM has the whole thing here

Oh and they are also reporting that on Hardball (for those who missed it) last night Trent Lott gave the finger to the GOP and basically said they were pushed by the admin to approve the war based on what the admin fed them.

    It’s a great day indeed…

Even though I hate the Steelers (but I like you John!) I loved Cowher. He was a good coach and a fun personality. The NFL won’t be the same.

Denny Green is looking for a ….

Wait. The Cardinals are paying him 2.5 million to go fishing.

And from what I read, he isn’t a much better fisherman than he is a football coach. Some people just have all the luck.

Luckily for the Steelers, he is probably not really looking right now.

Well John, if the Steelers announce they’ve signed Charlie Casserly as GM and Dom Capers as head coach you might want to start looking for nearby tall buildings with roof access.

Cowher was a class act and tough as nails. You can’t help but love the guy.

Come to think of it, he’d make a great SecDef… Is it too late?

I can’t explain my longstanding dislike of Cower. His histrionics? The long, inexplicable love affair with Kordell Stewart? The team’s perpetual respectable level of shittiness? Leftover rage from when they lost in the SB to a truly detestable Cowboys team? Who knows.

But what can you say, the guy went to the playoffs ten times, and won a title. Sorry, Steelers fans, not a fun day.

Maybe they can go after Nick Saban. He’s been at Alabama for two whole days, so I’m sure he’s reaching the point where he’s ready to look for a new job.

*In the fakest Superbowl ever. I think a sober analysis would focus on all his epic post-season collapses and not the one horrendous Superbowl.

(In other words, Steelers fans, I don’t think you’re losing very much.)

I liked him, even though I was a Brown’s fan until they left for Baltimore and even though he was coaching the Steelers team that just barely denied the Colts their Super Bowl trip in ’96 and another trip to the AFC Championship in ’06.

I didn’t realize he was so young. What was he, 34, when he got the head coaching gig?

Answer some other questions, yes, he was 34 when he was hired. And yes, the Steelers do have two candidates in house. They are offensive coordinator Ken Whisenhunt and offensive line coach/assistant head coach Russ Grimm. I think right now Grimm may have the edge while Whis could end up in Atlanta. But then again, 15-years-ago it looked like the Steelers were set to hire Dave Wannstedt but didn’t…thank God.

Alas poor Grill, I knew him well, Horatio. The fanbase here has him being the inevitable replacement for Romeo Crenell when he flops again next year. His youngest daughter has two years to go, however, so I wouldn’t expect him to return for at least that long.

Bears are finally getting some recognition. They are in the big dance. Life is Good! If they put Vasher on Wayne the entire game they win it easily. Tillman is toast. It has been 21 years! I would run Jones and Benson until they dropped.
