Biden

Wow. You don’t often see a Democratic presidential candidate booed on the Daily Show. Beyond today’s flub mister foreign policy experience’s big idea appears to be to partition Iraq and then leave. Great idea. Who gets Baghdad? Kirkuk? Then there’s the minor problem of the Turkish and Iranian armies racing to occupy Kurdistan. I would rate the president’s surge plan as slightly less demented, and my readers should know that I don’t say that lightly.

If Biden somehow, improbably, hangs on until the non-competitive PA primary I will relish voting against him.

***Update***

Obama. Ouch.

Joe (MBNA-Delaware) is going nowhere and he seems to be the only one who doesn’t know it already, even before he announced. This is about vanity and little more. Lots of Dems like me would have opposed him strictly because of the bankruptcy bill, even without the slur from today. And it was a slur and we all know it.

But you know, I was thinking. There’s a lot of people who don’t seem to like Obama because he lacks experience.

Well thus far, Joe Biden is the most experienced candidate I’ve seen announce.

So I’m assuming they’re all going for Biden. Which makes his chances pretty good.

I don’t think it was a slur strictly because Obama is black, but more because he is a rival who is more likely to go further than Joe ever would. But it certainly came out sounding badly and opened him up to lots of criticism because it had that passive sort of racism sound to it that a lot of people do feel even when they would never admit it, even to themselves.

Iraq is getting partitioned as we speak. Look up the internal displacement by ethnic groups, Im sure youll see the lines being drawn as we speak. How much influence do you think Maliki has in Kurdistan? Baghdad? A disfunctional mess.

Honestly, what do you expect to happen in Iraq? A unified government? Yeah, a few too many dead bodies with holes drilled into their heads for that.

Biden isnt advocating something crazy, what hes arguing is going to be the reality, unless youd rather see a bloody civil war as lots of ethnic cleansing.

Hilarious how libs like Steve were so vocally critical of Cal Ripken Jr. because the media “sucks his cock because he’s white”, yet these same libs are fawning over Obama, not because he has much qualifications to speak of, but because he’s black. And of course, they see no hypocrisy with these double standards.

And I love how libs are going apeshit over Biden calling Obama “articulate”, an unambiguous compliment everywhere but in the racially-obsessed bizarro world of leftist PC. Hello leftards! Obama really is very articulate. And so is John Edwards!

Candy Crowley, CNN: “He is… a very articulate man. … He was front and center during the Monica Lewinsky impeachment trial of Bill Clinton and was considered very articulate during that time.” (January 1, 2003)

Blogger Steve Benen, the Carpetbagger Report: “… Edwards is a very bright, articulate, and aggressive lawmaker.” (August 26, 2003)

David Greenberg, Legal Affairs: “Fresh-faced and articulate, he possessed a warmth that his rivals lacked.” (January 2004)

Slate partial headline: “… John Edwards is bright and articulate and really, really youthful. …” (February 6, 2004)

Charles Paul Freund, Reason Online: “[A]lmost all the coverage was founded on the theme of Edwards as an articulate, appealing, and energetic political force.” (July 7, 2004)

Rob McManamy, the University of Chicago Chronicle: “The charismatic, passionate and articulate former U.S. Sen. John Edwards is speaking out about the need to lift more Americans out of poverty and into the middle class.” (March 2, 2006)

David Hampton, clarionledger.com: “Edwards is young, smart, articulate and a good Southerner with moderate tendencies and a heart for traditional Democratic issues.” (December 28, 2006)

    wikiDemocrats.com: “He’s charming, he’s smart and he’s articulate.” (as of January 29, 2007)

You know what? I don’t think John Edwards and his supporters consider it an insult that he keeps being called “articulate.”

It wasn’t that. It was the context. (Remember that word, Darrell?) Biden claimed of Obama, ‘”you got the first mainstream African-American who is articulate and bright and clean and a nice-looking guy … I mean, that’s a storybook, man.” ‘ It wasn’t that Biden was insulting to Obama, so much. It was more that he was insulting and dismissive of Jesse Jackson, Al Sharpton, Carol Moselely-Braum, etc. If Obama is the first one who is articulate and bright and clean and nice-looking, then what is Biden saying about those others?

Anyhow, Biden would have done better if he had only given them this quote:

Flaunting your ignorance, pretending you have a clue. If you actually knew people born in Pakistan and India living here, rather than talking out your ass, you would know that generally speaking they take no more offense at such mistake, than a German American being called a “Norwegian”.

I know I’ve seen people from Taiwan spit venom after being refered to as “Chinese”. And people from Hondoras and El Salvador lose it over being called “Mexicans”. I’ve had more than on Pakistani stare daggers at me for refering to them as “Indians”. The Bangeladeshi are equally sensative.

I did the taxes of a transvestite yesterday, and let me tell you, when the screen prompted me for “Mr./Mrs.”, that was an ackward situation.

The trick is to use something called ‘tact’, also refered to as ‘diplomacy’. Sometimes simply called ‘not being a complete asshole’.

I dislike Joe Biden and would never consider voting for him, but I am really sick of the “gotcha” mentality that has taken over both sides of the blogosphere. Listen to Biden’s actual words.

Not only is there a pause between “African-American” and “who”, there is actually a “Yeah” from the interviewer in between them. He fumbles over the word “mainstream”, apparently looking for a way to describe Obama’s across-the-s[ectrum appeal. Biden is a jerk who is in the pocket of the credit card industry, but saying that he’s a racist because of an outright distortion of a statement he made is nothing but a cheap shot.

Back on-topic – Tim, are you opposed to the partition idea in general, or Biden’s cut-n-run version of it?

The de facto partition that we have now is known as “ethnic cleansing.” It’s savage, bloody and merciless because Iraq was a relatively cosmopolitan society where in many places the two sects interdigitated freely. The Kurds didn’t interdigitate quite so freely so Saddam integrated them involuntarily in places like Kirkuk. The upshot is that families have to be torn apart, neighborhoods have to be stripped of as many as half of their inhabitants and two large cities, Baghdad and Kirkuk, become up-for-grabs battlegrounds. It’s a human rights nightmare.

Pretty clearly there is a world of difference between passively participating in ethnic cleansing by failing to stop it and actively pitching in. As I said in the post, even if we did pitch in, who would get the disputed areas? The unfortunate Pakisatnis stationed on the remote Khyber pass could tell you that these aren’t small matters.

Then there’s the Kurdistan problem. The moment that K-stan gains independence the Iranian and Turkish armies will roll in and compete to see who can take it away first. We wouldn’t be able to stop them and at this point we lack the international standing to do it even if we wanted to. Complicating things somewhat, the Kurds are more or less Israel’s best friends in the mideast so we might want to a lot.

At least the “surge” might give us enough boots to beat a safe retreat, and I don’t see it making things that much worse unless we do something drooling stupid like arrest Sadr or instigate war with Iran. Lending our support to partition is a guaranteed disaster and will make us the enemy of literally everybody. Thanks but no thanks.

I don’t see the biggest difference, especially when it’s American-armed militias and American-paid contractors who get involved in the slaughters.

I honestly don’t see Iraq holding together for another five years. As the saying goes, “the center cannot hold”. Who gets what cities and how we deal with refugees remains a tactical problem. From a political standpoint, we need to recognize that the Kurds will get their Kurdistan (if for no other reason than the Shites will force them to it), and Al-Sadr will get his own little fiefdom (unless someone kills him). It’s just a matter of whether Sunnis are allowed to live in Iraq at all, and how all three power bases settle. There will either be three governments or two genocides in Iraq. Too much bad blood has seen to that.

At least the “surge” might give us enough boots to beat a safe retreat, and I don’t see it making things that much worse unless we do something drooling stupid like arrest Sadr or instigate war with Iran.

What a cretin, even if he was trying to woo voters like this.

Some how you got “cretins” from “What a cretin.” Cretins is plural Darrell, CRETIN is singular, therefore anyone with moderate reading skills should have been able to grasp I was refering to one person. But there is another clue, I wrote “even if he (because I was referring to one cretin) was wooing voters like this.” It would have made more sense (not much, but a little) if you thought “he” was a reference to Chris Rock but that was in a separate paragraph so I guess you forgot.

In fact, it’s the equivalent of calling an African-American the “n” word.

Merely mistaking an Indian for a Pakastani is only slightly less offensive in their eyes. I’m pretty sure Pakistanis don’t appreciate the reverse, either. You co-workers were probably just being polite because they know you didn’t know any better.

Ok fuckstick, let’s examine my “purposeful” misinterpretation verbatim from upthread. Context

these same libs are fawning over Obama, not because he has much qualifications to speak of, but because he’s black.

What a stupid thing to say. Care to support that? Instead of doing your usual categorical denunciation of the group lib why don’t you say specifically which “libs” you had in mind. Me? Someone we know? I’m sure that you wouldn’t pull a comment like that completely out of your ass.

Tim says my comment is “stupid” but being the coy jackass that he is, he doesn’t bother to say how or why. So given this intentional vagueness, I respond making a reasonable assumption.. after all, is there any honest doubt that Osama is light on qualifications for POTUS? Given that, I respond with this

Are you seriously disputing that Obama is widely looked upon as the next Dem “messiah” among many/most leftists?

No “purposeful misinterpretation” asshole.. an honest answer to what I guessed he was asking. tBone, do really consider yourself to be an honest person? You’re not. You constantly attribute motivations and words to me which I never thought or wrote, and that’s dishonest in any book. The above example is case in point.

It’s called a “plural executive” or “weak governor” system.

    Let’s see.

Well, contrary to your assertion, we have been working to rebuild the country Tom.

American forces in Iraq now are orders of magnitude more capable than Saddam’s army at thwarting any potential Iranian military actions.

Newsflash dumbass – mullahs select who can and cannot run for office.

We’ve kept military bases in Japan and Germany for over 50 years.

Oh wait, that last one was followed by an opinion. Let’s see whether you tag it:

I think we’ll keep bases in Iraq for a long time too.

    And again:

I think it will. At this point, giving relatively newbie troops highly sophisticated equipment risks that it will get in the hands of the insurgents.

This isn’t some obscure semantic argument, Darrell. This is your own word use. I seem to have a very easy time telling your statements of opinion from your declarations of fact.

you don’t need to state something like ‘it is a fact that…’ to assert something as factual. saying ‘the sky is blue’ is a statement of fact, whether or not you say ‘it is a fact that’ in front of it.

hell, you can put ‘i think’ in front of something and that doesn’t automatically make it an opinion either. ‘i think the sky is blue’ isn’t a statement of an opinion. its an assertion of a fact, with ‘i think’ in front of it.

Good for you, Darrell. You’ve backed down from the claim that running the second-largest state in the union is adequate preparation for running the union itself. All credit to you for that.

But, see, this is where you over-reach. Having been slapped down on one tired old turd-blossom canard, you trot out another one — the bi-partisan, ima-uniter-notta-divider dodge.

Bi-partisanship is not that hard to accomplish when there’s not a dime’s worth of difference between the two parties. The (more or less) well-known Texas progressives — Ann Richards, Molly Ivins, Jim Hightower, Lloyd Doggett, John Henry Faulk — are well-known because they’re the exception.

In his time, Bullock was, like virtually all TX Dems, a moderate Republican. Nelson Rockefeller with a different accent. (Of course, I’m measuring by this vintage political scale I picked up on eBay; it was calibrated back when moderate Republicans actually walked the earth.)

One of my close relatives worked with Bullock for decades, and I have no doubt at all that Bob Bullock would be appalled by what Bush has wrought.

To you all that don’t get the difference between a flub and a social gafffe, tell me one gaffe that Bush said that offended a group of people. True he has misspoken or mangled words and phrases- but that is not a “social” gaffe.

So far we got Hilary (the Indian gas stations), Biden (clean blacks), and Kerry (soldiers are stuck), Dean (“I hate Republicans” and with the scream that made people doubt his sanity and ko’ed his nomination chances), and many more- and they haven’t even had the spotlight of years of presidency on them. Bush definitely has to be smarter than these people to avoid the stupidity these other candidates engaged in.

His little “Where are those missing WMDs?” joke pissed a lot of people off. Also, I’ve hated him ever since I heard about how he made fun of Carla Faye Tucker after he had her killed.

Shorter Scs: With my face glued to Cheney’s crotch I heard nothing Bush said in the last seven years that would lead me to believe he’s made a gaffe or said something stupid like “Bring it on” or “Want some wood?”.

#1: Your controversies are invented by the same media that somehow simultaneously fawns over Kerry/Dean’s every word.

#2: I’m pretty sure quotes like “Heckuva job Brownie” and “no one could have anticipated the breach” offended a few people scattered throughout the country. Calling the war “just a comma” insulted more than a few families of dead soldiers.

As to foreign policy, all the Axis of Evil Islamofascist crap doesn’t exactly soothe bruised egos either. Now I’ll grant that I am not all that worried about offending AQ’s sensibilities (though I think we could try to manage a few less gaffes concerning Iran and North Korea), but these were not just mangled phrases, nor were their meanings taken out of context a la Kerry or Biden/Obama. They were deliberate insults; they were much worse than a gaffe, which is merely a social faux pas.

Sorry those don’t count as gaffes. Those are statements that mainly offend partisans, not groups of ordinary people. Give it up – Bush has better speaking skills in this regard than most of your vaunted dems so far. And this is not just a small thing – this kind of stuff, just one small slip, can end a person’s aspirations. Ask Kerry or George Allen.

No – I’m saying you actually have to PROVE I’m wrong TimF. You don’t get to command that I’m wrong. You may be blogleader but as far as I know, you’re still not God. (maybe a minor cult leader though…)

This is the advantage of being denser than a neutron star, my friend. When somebody proves you wrong you can dismiss the proof and conclude you’re right. It’s your MO. If I was dumb enough to continue you will become defensively patronizing in 2 +/- 1 comments and then go on as if everybody is insane for not agreeing with you ad infinitum. Why bother?

Just in case you’re to dim to get it – here’s the definition of “gaffe”

gaffe /gæf/ Pronunciation Key – Show Spelled Pronunciation[gaf] Pronunciation Key – Show IPA Pronunciation

–noun a social blunder; faux pas.

For example, telling Brownie he’s doing a heckuva job is not a “social” blunder. Bush was going on the information he was receiving from his group at the time. So he may have been wrong- or made a mistake, but that is not a “gaffe”. Second of all, we found out later that the blame was not all Brownies – but that is beside the point for now.

Again, a gaffe is not just a mistake on facts or tactics, or a politcally controversial statement – it’s just a dumbass, unneccesary statement that offends people- in a personal way- such as in stereotyping. “Crusade” is not one because that is how the word “crusade” is used. Just like some pol used the word “niggardly” a while back. Some people tried to make hay out of that like it was a racist comment – but it’s just what the word is and has nothing to do with race. The only thing on the list I would admit comes close to a gaffe is the WMD jokes- as that was socially awkward. But that is not exactly a personal insult to anyone- more like “insensitivity” than gaffe. And besides, he probably didn’t write that anyway- some speechwriter probably did and some higher-up approved it- so that’s not really an impromptu gaffe solely on Bush’s part. So, I repeat- Bush is virtually gaffe-free.

Gee Tim – why on earth would I become defensive after someone calls me “denser than a neutron star”? Everyone know thats a compliment right? No need to get defensive on that right? Give me a break Tim. Go back to watching Star Trek.

    Damn, unders win.

SCS, why do you compare ‘crusade’ to niggardly? Crusade is not a poorly chosen word that accidentally resembles something offensive. It is exactly the word that he meant to use, and people found it offensive for exactly the reason that he used it. Things don’t always look the same seen from someone else’s perspective.

“Crusade” Tim, is a word that means something like “forceful quest”. It was perfectly appropriate for the sentence. It can also refer to the “Crusades”, but anyone with half a brain knew that Bush meant it the former way. It should not be offensive to anyone to use a word properly in a sentence. Unless you’re a partisan trying to make hay (cough, cough).

cru·sade /kruˈseɪd/ Pronunciation Key – Show Spelled Pronunciation[kroo-seyd] Pronunciation Key – Show IPA Pronunciation noun, verb, -sad·ed, -sad·ing.
    –noun

    2. any war carried on under papal sanction.

That’s funny, I predicted that 1) you would become patronizing, and 2) you wouldn’t get my point. How wrong I was. Instead you gave me definitions from dictionary.com and vague suppositions about how people who aren’t you see the world. Let me repeat:

Tim, first of all, probably most people from entirely different backgrounds would not get an English language version of that soundbite but it would be translated, hopefully properly, into their own language. And second of all, I would think even people who aren’t American’s are bright enough to realize that some words have different meanings in differnt contexts- a little like the word “jihad” which has many meanings I’m told. Just because they’re not American doesn’t mean they aren’t ALL stupid out there Tim!
