Balloon Juice

Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

Too often we confuse noise with substance. too often we confuse setbacks with defeat.

New McCarthy, same old McCarthyism.

Accountability, motherfuckers.

Bark louder, little dog.

Thanks for reminding me that Van Jones needs to be slapped.

Despite his magical powers, I don’t think Trump is thinking this through, to be honest.

This has so much WTF written all over it that it is hard to comprehend.

Bad news for Ron DeSantis is great news for America.

Ron DeSantis, the grand wizard, oops, governor of FL

Let’s delete this post and never speak of this again.

You come for women, you’re gonna get your ass kicked.

The poor and middle-class pay taxes, the rich pay accountants, the wealthy pay politicians.

This isn’t Democrats spending madly. This is government catching up.

This blog will pay for itself.

Too often we hand the biggest microphones to the cynics and the critics who delight in declaring failure.

A consequence of cucumbers

Schmidt just says fuck it, opens a tea shop.

Fani Willis claps back at Trump chihuahua, Jim Jordan.

My years-long effort to drive family and friends away has really paid off this year.

In my day, never was longer.

And we’re all out of bubblegum.

Prediction: the GOP will rethink its strategy of boycotting future committees.

Just because you believe it, that doesn’t make it true.

Wow, I can’t imagine what it was like to comment in morse code.

Marcotte Resigns

Amanda has resigned from the campaign, so that is the end of that. Or is it? I found this post from Ace to be pretty humorous:

Edwards’ Angle? Thinking about Edwards’ tough decision on Marcotte, it occurs to me there was an overlooked reason to keep her on the staff– had she quit, she would have been free to be her own vagina-proud self, and Edwards would have had zero control over her — and yet every bigoted thing she wrote would be connected with him, as he made the decision to hire her.

Well, now she’s in full-out Vaginal Avenger mode. And Edwards is even more on the hook for this crap now — not only did he hire her, he re-affirmed the decision to hire her.

Can’t wait.

In other words, Edwards will now be responsible for whatever Amanda says, anyway. Heads, I win. Tails- there is no tails in the hyper-partisan blogosphere.

We’ll just go on record right now and state that John Edwards is not responsible for anything Amanda Marcotte says.

Somehow I can’t see the writings of a person who worked on Edwards campaign over a year ago being crucial to many people’s vote.

As if this wasn’t the plan all along — stand by the blogger in question and “refuse” to fire her so a bunch of other self-important bloggers don’t cry blooody fury; then allow her to “quit” shortly thereafter.

Don’t want to piss of the bloggers — thats a whole .00000001% of the electorate.

Wow, it takes an ass like Ace to make Amanda seem logical and restrained.

Yes, Gatcha, this all is so fucking “inside baseball.” Nobody really gives a rats-arse about bloggers; only a few more actually care sweet F-A about poli-blogging in general.

Why does Donohue stop here? Why not insist that Edwards fire all his pro-choice workers?

Apparently there’s some new bugaboo about something else she said recently in a movie review:

The Christian version of the virgin birth is generally interpreted as super-patriarchal, where god is viewed as so powerful he can impregnate without befouling himself by touching a woman, and women are nothing but vessels.

Now, maybe I’m blind or something, but I’m absolutely lost as to what part of that statement is actually controversial or offensive. Have Christians never actually read the Bible?

Everyone knows God is a man with a giant, magical penis. Marcotte just offended the religious right by implying that this is a bad way to envision God. If Marcotte doesn’t respect God’s wing-wong, she can’t respect the wing-wong of any man. And that means she’s a lesbian. And lesbians are evil. Therefore Amanda Marcotte is the devil. QED.

Go read some of the hate mail Amanda has gotten over this from self-identifying Christians and you start wondering about letting them run loose.

If Christians don’t want to be taxed with misogyny, then they shouldn’t say misogynistic things.

    Grumpy-

It is entirely possible to adore neither side in this kerfuffle. i assure you, the one thing Amanda and I have in common is no love lost for the lunatic fringe of the religious right. Having said that, I am confused what to do when I confront babble such as this:

I suspect, strongly, that this story is part of the reason that Christianity was so attractive to women in its early days, because this sort of random misogynist scapegoating is all too real in a patriarchy, and this story must have touched a lot of women at the time, who would be impressed with Jesus’ unwillingness to play into such misogyny.

If you asked me, without a cite, where I thought that came from, I would tell you it was from an SNL skit mocking feminism.

If Christians don’t want to be taxed with misogyny, then they shouldn’t say misogynistic things.

They don’t think misogyny is a bad thing. Au contraire, they think misogyny is a very good thing, approved by god and the bible and alla that.

They’re enraged by people who dare to think otherwise. Esp. female people, who self-cancel out because, being female, they’re worthless anyway.

It’s fascinating. Making this comment means you hate Christians.

But being a pastor of a mega church, where you convince the church to buy a plane, then sell you the plane with a loan you take from the church, and then lease the plane back from you at a rate double what it cost to pay back the loan.

    That’s supportive of Christianity.

Now I’m leaning to voting Hillary again. Because she’ll bring down the IRS bitch wrath sword of heaven down on these jerks if she wins.

no love lost for the lunatic fringe of the religious right

No love lost for the far right is love gained for the far left, which is bottle fed here at BJ as much as anywhere else. I see that there are few defenders of Marcotte on this post, which is encouraging since she is an indefensible maggot.

Nevertheless, I think Ace’s point is that Edwards will long be remembered for his association with these nitwits. I say “these” because, of course, McEwen is till emplyed there, although she’s likely drafting her exit strategy and statement as we speak. The bootlicking “apologies” they wrote last week, as attempts to repudiate their previous comments and throw sand on the present fire, are now shown to be willfully false. Which goes to show that the left has no backbone, no scruples, no guts, no honesty.

You live with vulgarity, you die by vulgarity. And this is how Edwards will be hurt by this mess. He’s finished. Completely finished. And now Amanda (and soon, McEwen) can go back to her cuddly abortions and vicious speeches against the reich wing after this unsuccessful and embarrassing attempt to work with grown-ups and bring credibility to the nutroots movement. We can all be grateful they could not gain traction in the big time.

“Nevertheless, I think Ace’s point is that Edwards will long be remembered for his association with these nitwits.”

Yep, I bet he’ll be remembered for weeks on end by the 2% of the population who are already focused on 2008. It might even sway the votes of dozens of people.

We’re still nearly a year out from the first primaries. In two weeks there will be some new revelation about something else and this will be forgotten.

Give Ace credit; he’s the only blogger I’ve run across yet who’s so incompetent that his defenses of torture are actually AMUSING.

As for Amanda’s “Jesus and Misogyny” passage that John quotes: Newsweek pointed out a few issues ago that Jesus really was unusual for his time in the regular closeness of his (non-sexual) friendship with women. Regardless of what you think of the Virgin Birth concept, he does seem to have done a lot to bust up the atrocious patriarchalism that one sees in the Old Testament.

Between Marcotte and astronaut Lisa Nowak, what is it lately with batty women driving across the country to hang with men who are ambivalent about them? Were there diapers involved again?

I’m predicting that the Edwards campaign soon releases a statement about revising their psychological testing.

John writes, “If you asked me, without a cite, where I thought that came from, I would tell you it was from an SNL skit mocking feminism.”

And I would assume you’d never taken a “Bible as Literature” class, because that IS one of the interpretations behind the “first stone” story. Do a google search for “gospel of luke” + “women” and a lot of stuff comes up.
    Just sayin’.

We’ll just go on record right now and state that John Edwards is not responsible for anything Amanda Marcotte says.

Keep it down! If we avoid saying things like this then we can spend all of the primary season saying that John Edwards uses the word “becunted” when speaking about women. That is when he isn’t busy sitting around with Barack Obama mocking military funerals.

Yep, I bet he’ll be remembered for weeks on end by the 2% of the population who are already focused on 2008. It might even sway the votes of dozens of people.

I think Michelle Malkin and Bill Donohue should order up a poll through one of the big name pollsters on Marcotte and McEwan’s effect on the election, just because it would be funny to see the results.

“Sorry Michelle, the only answers we got in our phone poll were ‘Who?’ and ‘Christ, give it a rest. It’s not even 2008!'”

    That’ll be $5,000 dollars.”

    Filthy McNasty,
People will associate Marcotte with Edwards only because morons like you will continue to flog a dead horse. Kreist, you people are still getting mileage out of Bill Clinton’s blowjobs. How do you maintain this assinine outrage over such a long period of time? Don’t you have more important things to think about, to be angry at? Wake the f@ck up.

What it shows is that Edwards, after a period of deniable plausibility, folded like a wimp, when faced with a trivial whackjob. Imagine how he’d do if even one-tenth of the GOP slime machine was to be turned upon him.
