The Gap

FacebookTweetEmail

The WH and Bush have trumpeted their document dump of emails, stating that if the Democrats and others want to know what happened, they should read the emails. Which is great and everything, except for one little detail- three weeks of messages appear to be missing:

I think a commenter in our document dump research thread may have been the first to notice that the emails released by the Justice Department seem to have a gap between November 15th and December 4th of last year.

(Our commenter saw it late on the evening of the dump itself — see the comment date-stamped March 20, 2007 02:19 AM in the research thread)

The firing calls went out on December 7th. But the original plan was to start placing the calls on November 15th. So those eighteen days are pretty key ones.

I blame Democratic overreach.

The reason 18 days are missing is because the White House and Justice Department computers were just updated for the Gregorian calendar. There’s been a little bit of backlog in their IT department.

But, could they possibly have thought they could get away with not supplying all the emails? Even I have trouble thinking that they could be that stupid.

in the old days, the House Judiciary Committee would have assigned one, maybe two, employees to go through the emails… and it would have been done systematically, and taken weeks, because they were dumping 3000 pages.

And the media might have assigned one or two reporters to read them looking for “smoking guns”, but they wouldn’t assign anyone to actually put all the emails documents into context. (they ignored the Bush military records after finding no obvious “smoking gun” — even though there WERE smoking guns if you examined them within their proper context.)

Rove and Co. were working from pre-internet assumptions about how the data would be processed, and assumed that the gap would not be detected for weeks… well after the scandal had played out, and the media was on another story.

They failed to understand that thousands (if not tens of thousands) of people would be going through these documents meant that the odds were really high that the gap would be discovered immediately — and that the story would be picked up by the media

(and having it be an 18 day gap to match the 18 minute gap makes the story irresistable….)

Could be, but I don’t know, the “didn’t understand YouTube/Google/PayPal” excuse is sooooo 2006. My assumption was just that the White House is trying to run out the clock. It’ll be another two weeks or more before those e-mails are “found,” but they’ll be of unverifiable provenance. Or they won’t be found at all, and it’ll take another month at least to figure out exactly which member of the administration gave the order/bribe/threat to the record-keeper.

And so on until it’s the fall of 2008. Either they don’t care about the fortunes of Republicans in the next elections, or they believe (rightly or wrongly, and either way it could depend greatly on details) that investigations wouldn’t make Democrats look good. It seems to me that since last November, the administration’s goals have been relatively simple: keep the army in Iraq and Bush in office for as long as possible, damn the consequences, and only admit to a mistake if it means not admitting to a larger one.

Just when you think this administration can’t sink any lower, they find themselves a trap door. The infamous 18 minutes that Nixon left in his old tapes from yesteryear and the 18 days here are going to be striking too much of a chord of recognition. As to “not breaking any laws” regarding the removal of attorneys, that actually remains to be seen since the evolving stories clearly indicate that GWB and his band of merry followers are having trouble with a straight story. More sophistry to cover up specific facts and they keep insisting “there is nothing to see here”.

If all this USAttorney stuff is such a “non-story,” why is the explanation of why they were fired changing on an almost daily basis? And why are members of the Party of Torture calling for Abu Gonzales’ resignation?

Also, did you happen to notice yesterday when the Boy King made his “bring it on” statement about subpoenas, that he used the word “resignations,” instead of “firings?” The title on the handout also used the word “resignations.”

The eight US Attorneys did not resign, they were purged, or, at the very least, fired. Even someone with an IQ of 23, like yourself, should be able to figure that out.

From The Jesus General, The Gap, explained:

Who’s to blame for the 18 day gap

The French are making much of the 18 day gap in Justice Department emails discussing the US attorney firings. They say it’s highly suspicious that no one at Justice mentioned the firings between the date when the firings were originally scheduled to be conducted, Nov 15, and a date just 3 days before the firings actually occurred.

I guess I shouldn’t be surprised that the Demislamunistofascists would undermine our national security by questioning the veracity of Our Leader and Inquisitor General Gonzales, the Iron Fist of the Conservative Christianist Cultural Revolution. It’s what they do. But I must admit that I’m very taken aback by the fact that they would so openly and apologetically support Al Qaeda.

And they are helping Al Qaeda. We know that, because Khalid Sheikh Mohammed confessed to erasing those 18 days worth of emails. He hoped that it would weaken Our Leader, so that his allies in Congress would succeed in their plan to put “In Mohammed We Trust” on our money.

I’m sure there will be those who won’t believe this explanation. They’ll point to Mohammed’s detention at Gitmo and say it would be impossible for him to hack into Justice’s network. Unfortunately, that‘s just not true. Using a makeshift computer system composed of the silver platters, tea services, caviar spoons, champagne bottles and Direct TV dishes provided to each Gitmo detainee, he was able to defeat Justices network security with the help of no more than five outside number 3 Al Qaeda officials.

    Emphasis mine. Isn’t he great?
