Here is the situation.
I switched computers, and have apparently lost all my information for this website. Meaning, I can not log in to make changes to the website because I not only do not know where to log in, but what my username PW are. Basically, all I have is the ability to log into WordPress.
How do I fix this? It has been so long since I touched the site I do not know where to begin. Would everything be at Hosting Matters?

Scroll down a little for what to do about forgotten passwords.

You’ll have to prove who you are to HM, and then they will email you a new password.
Presumably your username will not change (not that that matters, since you don’t know what it is).
They also might have to give you the URL of your site’s control or admin page or whatever they call it.
Should be working
I have several websites and am also disorganized, so this is a common problem for me. The hosting companies have always been very nice about it. Usually I just need my monthly billing info, email or similar information to prove I’m not stealing someone elses website.
The Other Steve
See, if you had used a Mac, none of this would have happened!
Equal Opportunity Cynic
Good on ya, TBM. I was thinking there should be something like that for WordPress but before i could go look for it, there’s your post.
Absolute worst case, if you have the database login info (which you may not), we could probably hack the encrypted password in there. But better to go the proper WP route, particularly the automatic e-mailer portion.

Did you switch to a Mac like Tim, but are afraid to confess? :-)
Or did Tim sucker you into taking his old Compaq?
ThymeZone
I am organizing a day of prayer for you, John.
I think that’s what my Republican friends do in times like these. I have some calls in to Kanasas and Tennessee.
I assume that the effect will hit fairly soon.

Find yourself a wife/girlfriend. They’ll remind you of everything, everyday, all the time….so that you’ll never forget. You’ll learn damn well to remember usernames, passwords, and you brother-in-law’s wife’s nephew’s bah mitz anniversary.
Vladi G
Is this a trick question? How the hell did you post this if you can’t get in to the site?

“Halp me, Jon Carry, mye komputr is stuk!”
Sorry, I know, not helpful. ;)
Rome Again
You have Republican friends? Ummm, I’m thinking perhaps I don’t ever want to meet them.
Dave
Can’t you just ring the White House? They probably have all this information on file.

Interesting question! I do, actually, have Republican friends, especially at work.
I am a very tolerant and acceptting, nonjudgmental person. Anticipating the snark, let me remind everyone that ppGaz is a persona, not a real person. I’m extremely easy to get along with.
Rome Again
Well, actually, I see they can’t be completely wingnutty if you tolerate them. I have a pretty good idea what you (not ppGaz, not TZ… but YOU) tolerate. Okay, I might meet them ;) .
ThymeZone
By and large, I would say that I can eat shit and bark at the moon with the best of them :)

Vladi G,
If you read the post carefully, he can post (probably because there’s a cookie somewhere with his ongoing session ID). He just can’t configure anything else. But come to think of it, that session info wouldn’t make it across the migration of computers, so…. yeah, now I’m confused.
Good question, Vladi G. :)
Rome Again
You wouldn’t have this problem if you wrote this information down in a computer info notebook and kept track of your accounts (you could even put it in a locked diary, or a locked strong box so no one could get it). Just an idea for the future.
Rome Again
Yeah, I’m the only one that makes your blood boil, apparently. (just kidding, btw).

I do everything possible in Firefox rather than IE, so periodically I just back up my C:\Documents and Settings\myusername\Application Data\Mozilla\Firefox folder. I’d highly recommend this, as it backs up things you usually take for granted like your history, bookmarks, autocomplete, stored passwords, cookies, etc. You can completely wipe your HD and install a virgin copy of Windows, install Firefox, and copy over your backup of this folder–and have total continuity in your browser and web password settings. I highly recommend this in the future, John.
For IE there’s no easy one-stop backup for this stuff, although you can use the crappy and unreliable Files and Settings Transfer Wizard to approximate it. I don’t recommend relying on it.
Catsy
Apparently WordPress treats backslashes as escape characters. Insert them where appropriate in the path above.
The Other Steve
Are you kidding me? They forgot how to logon to their own email servers!
Fruitbat Jones
Ohhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh….SNAP!
srv
That explains why y’all brought us John McCain.
ThymeZone
Uh, yeah, sure. Are you compiling a collection of your own most grotesque non sequiturs? If so, this one’s a keeper!
McCain? We wouldn’t vote him assistant treasurer of the neighborhood association if he were running unopposed.
Rome Again
Oh, I guess because I was in FL in 2000 that means I’m to blame for Georgie? I think NOT!
Pb
I guess that’s the way the chad crumbles–but couldn’t you at least have beaten back the Brooks Brothers rioters?
Krista
Or you could just put all that stuff in one document and email it to yourself at a hotmail, gmail or yahoo address so that you can access it no matter what computer you’re at.
srv
You just get along with him, extremely easy.

What makes you think I was anywhere near them? You know it takes more than just an hour to drive through the state, unlike where I originally came from.
Pb
More than an hour? Oh, well, I can see why you didn’t, then.
The Other Steve
Or alternatively, print it out and tape it to your monitor.
That’s what most people do.
ChristieS
LOL, Krista…that’s what I do. Email myself all my pertinent logins.
