Balloon Juice

Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

The poor and middle-class pay taxes, the rich pay accountants, the wealthy pay politicians.

Putting aside our relentless self-interest because the moral imperative is crystal clear.

I’d try pessimism, but it probably wouldn’t work.

I really should read my own blog.

We’ve had enough carrots to last a lifetime. break out the sticks.

Whatever happens next week, the fight doesn’t end.

Reality always lies in wait for … Democrats.

Presidents are not kings, and Plaintiff is not President.

And we’re all out of bubblegum.

Roe isn’t about choice, it’s about freedom.

We cannot abandon the truth and remain a free nation.

The cruelty is the point; the law be damned.

Prediction: the GOP will rethink its strategy of boycotting future committees.

JFC, are there no editors left at that goddamn rag?

Let there be snark.

I was promised a recession.

A thin legal pretext to veneer over their personal religious and political desires

Let us savor the impending downfall of lawless scoundrels who richly deserve the trouble barreling their way.

Wow, I can’t imagine what it was like to comment in morse code.

Republicans are the party of chaos and catastrophe.

Their freedom requires your slavery.

If you tweet it in all caps, that makes it true!

A lot of Dems talk about what the media tells them to talk about. Not helpful.

The revolution will be supervised.

I suggest the absence of a quorum.

Don’t you mean the party of “Waaaah! [holds breath until blue]”?

Oh wait, I’m forgetting that when DemoNcRats follow the rules it is called obstructionism, whining and possibly terrist coddling. When Republicans follow the rules it’s protecting the nation from depraved terrist coddling libruls.

I don’t like to blog-whore, but this is a topic I just wrote two lengthy posts about, and I figure it’s more polite to link than to paste…

“Votes and Vetoes and Filibusters, Oh My”

    and
    “Hold” On a Second…

My position boils down two this: Reid and the Dems are wussing out by letting this bullshit go on. Strap on a pair and do something about it.

But according to Glenn Reynolds, its the Democrats fault that nothing got done and this Congress has lower approval ratings than Bush.

    Time for the nuclear option.

I have only one question: if the shoe were on the other foot, and 49 Senate Dems had blocked this many popular pieces of legislation, what do you suppose Senate Republicans would do about it?

That’s not a rhetoric question; I’m genuinely curious. The GOP is awful at governing, but they’re great at whining. This report from Senate Dems documenting the problem is excellent, but if the circumstances were reversed, I can guarantee the Senate Republicans would do more than just issue a detailed report.

The Republican Senators wouldn’t need to do much of anything. Bill O’ and Malkin and Limbaugh and the WSJ editorial board and Glenn Beck and David Broder and the rest of the gang would all pile on. Then the “middle grounders” like Tim Russert and Katie Couric would get “both sides of the story” and talk about why the Democrats can’t compromise.

That’s the beauty. All that “upperdown vote” bullshit in ’05 would never have received any steam if FOX wasn’t making it headline news. Republican Senatorial speeches don’t ring any louder on CSPAN than Democratic Senatorial speeches. Republicans just happen to have free megaphones, in the form of a pantywaste press corps.

Hmm, it looks like the Dems kept that powder nice and dry… For the Republicans to use.
